Realistically can anything be done to stop parents parking across driveway?

I live on the same street as a school. Every single day someone blocks our driveway and I’m at a point now where I’m getting super fed up of it! 😩 It is mostly the same woman, who on multiple occasions has been asked to stop but it’s like it falls on deaf ears and she feels entitled somehow to still park there.

I wouldn’t actually mind but my eldest has severe additional needs and will NOT walk any distance from the car to the house so it’s super important we are parked on the drive, which isn’t possible when she (or someone else) has swanned off to stand at the school gates to wait for her child. I mean, not like I need an excuse really, it’s my drive and I should be able to use it. The time the drive is blocked is ALWAYS when I’m getting back from picking up my son from school.

Realistically if I were to go in to the school with number plates, especially this one woman, is there anything they can do? Or anything anybody else can do? Sorry I know there’s worse problems to have but I’ve just had a baby 4 weeks a go, have a 20 month old, along with my eldest with ASD, I am trying my damn hardest every day and sick of arseholes making life even harder.

Get a camera on your drive.

Report her behaviour to the police this time you have a witness, next time you will have video too.

LlynTegid · 22/01/2025 14:02

Allege that the woman concerned is under the influence of drink or drugs that is impairing her eyesight and call the police. Social services are too busy, so I would not do that- if you cannot park safely and properly it is a form of neglect if you have children in the car.

In some places the woman concerned would not dare do this, as the car would be damaged by the time of her return. Not that I advocate this.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/01/2025 14:06

Do go to the police op, the head teacher is clearly on your side.
The fact she is doing this repeatedly even after you have asked her to stop, and she has behaved abusively, takes it to the next level.

The police are a fool to themselves because there will come a time that THEY want help from the community

Please don’t do this.

keep it factual. Throwing wild accusations will ruin any credibility and the police will be much less likely to assist you.

When it happened to my neighbour, unfortunately she tripped and an opened pot of yogurt spilled onto the drivers window and windscreen. It didn’t happen again!

GasPanic · 22/01/2025 15:18

If there is a lot of that sort of activity ring up the council and ask for a traffic warden to stop by ?

Should be easy pickings for them to make money by doling out a few penalty notices.

Bear in mind though if anyone local is doing anything wrong they might also get ticketed too.

kookoocachoo · 22/01/2025 18:13

Do you have an old bicycle? Or access to getting an old doesn’t work bicycle?

Park it across your driveway in the street, with a lock on it so it cannot be wheeled away. Have DH put it in road across drive each day as a big FU to Toxic Tammy. If she moves it accuse her of theft. But the lock will make it annoying to move .

DearDenimEagle · 22/01/2025 18:51

Install a bollard or two if you can’t put gates up. Bollards can be lowered with a key so you and family can use the drive but it stops anyone else getting in if you raise them when you are not using the driveway.

Coldanddamp · 22/01/2025 18:54

our school has a traffic warden?

Gravitasdepleted · 22/01/2025 19:01

This is harassment, report her to the police, you have photo evidence, the contact with the school, witnesses, the abuse to you and your partner.

NoCarbsForMe · 22/01/2025 19:20

Put your bins in the rd? Or get sone cones?

WhenTheyComeForYou · 22/01/2025 19:50

I would expect that you swearing at her first won’t have helped the situation or make any authority sympathise for you.

Whilst it’s annoying, using your drive to turn around isn’t crime of the century. But blocking your drive in isn’t on.

Im not sure the police will spend resources in this. Why don’t you get a bollard fitted? It’ll prevent not only her but future hers from using it.

BlackeyedSusan · 22/01/2025 20:08

Report her for harassment or something as she is doing it deliberately shown by not parking in a legitimate space when available.

You can't put bollards or gates on the road.

I thought they were using the drive. Sorry. I was sure I read she used the driveway to turn around but if I am mistaken then I know you can’t put them on the road. If it’s just parking across the driveway then the police will act if it’s blocking the owner in but not if the drive is empty . It’s illegal to park across a dropped kerb, as far as I’m aware

this time she turned round in the drive, but every day she is parking across the OPs driveway, so that when OP arrives home with her own son, who is disabled, she can't get into her driveway to park the car and get her son out.

Disabled son…the council paints a box in front of houses for disabled residents.
Op, contact the Local Authority and ask if you can have a disabled parking box in front of your house. My next door neighbour has one and there are several in neighbouring streets. If she parks on that, you really can expect help from police etc

The council won't paint a box if there is a driveway. OP can't win.

Redglitter · 24/01/2025 01:04

Haven't rtft so apologies if its been suggested. What about getting a white 'H' across your driveway. The long white line? Several of my neighbours have them. They've been very effective. I dont remember seeing anyone park on them

spanieleyes22 · 24/01/2025 01:20

I have this too so annoying and parents are so entitled!! I block them in sometimes and refuse to move . Also I annoy the principal of the school. Traffic wardens come but they come too early and all the parents turn around when they see them. I've never seen them give out a ticket except to me one morning when I had t been able to get a parking spot when I got home and forgot to move my car before the morning. So unfair. Anyway best was when the kids were let out early and had hi via jackets on and were taking down registrations of the naughty cars. Sympathies 🙈

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 24/09/2024 16:11

Contact your local councillor and ask them to put a solid white line across your driveway, it should at least act as a deterrent. Regardless of blocking your driveway she's blocking a dropped kerb which prevents wheelchair users from safely crossing. Report her to the school and council.

I have clearway signs and road markings . They don't care. One even pulled into my driveway one day and was outraged when I said he couldn't park there! Block them in. Only way

spanieleyes22 · 24/01/2025 01:26

kookoocachoo · 24/09/2024 16:33

It’s obvious. Park your own car in front of your driveway (this is allowed) until she finds another spot.
Driveway owner IS allowed to park in front of own driveway,

Thing is I was always out collecting my own so. From school and would arrive home to find driveway blocked yet again

endofthelinefinally · 24/01/2025 04:32

Put up a sign stating disabled access to and from driveway required at all times.
Then report her for a hate crime based on deliberately targeting a disabled child.

sashh · 24/01/2025 04:56

Go to the school.

I would consider the police, deliberately blocking the access of a disabled child to their home could be a hate crime. I mean hurty words are bad enough to get people arrested.

I've just seen someone else has the same idea.

Ask the council to put double yellow lines on the street.

Do you know any bikers? There is nothing illegal about a half a dozen bikers on your drive revving their engines and practicing turns in the road.
