I'm in the market for a new washing machine

I'm having a terrible time trying to get one. I picked out a Bosch machine or there's also a Samsung eco bubble on offer too. However I live at home with my mother and she wants to choose the machine but she also wants me to pay for half of it but I don't get a say in what to pick. She wants to go with the same rand that we had before - zanussi - and I found a machine however there's a problem in that there's no filter or drain hose. It's not on the front of the machine and if it's located at the back of the machine; that makes no sense. It has to be located within easy reach.

It's all just a nightmare. It shouldn't be this complicated to get a machine. I read only to avoid brands like beko, indesit, candy, Hotpoint.

I like the two models of machines that I picked out but my mother is having none of it. She wants to stay with zanussi and that's it, about that and no more about it from her. I was trying to help but she was so rude and sarcastic and now I have pulled away and looks like we will do without a machine for another week or two. The thing is I could buy a machine today online and get it delivered by tomorrow but she's being so ignorant about it.

I would never buy a hotpoint/indesit again because they just don't last.

My Samsung eco bubble has just broken, to be fair it's lasted 5 years with heavy use but I've never liked it. It doesn't rinse well, small things like socks get trapped in the door so don't wash, and the worst thing is it randomly stops mid cycle, like someone has pressed pause, which is a common fault with them according to Google.

After reading reviews I have ordered an LG one this time.

I have no experience of Zanussi machines but agree that having the filter at the front is handy.

Bosch/Miele are meant to be the best but are £££

dustoffthebooks · 24/09/2024 14:59

Don't get a Bosch. They're not what they were and are now manufactured to shoddy standards in China.

We also had problems with the Zanussi we had previously.

When this shitty, repaired Bosch goes, we're just getting something cheap and cheerful and just be prepared to replace it every couple of years. Unless you can afford to spend £££ on a top of the range kind then it's best to just treat them as a disposable object. The days of buying a machine and it lasting ten years is long gone. Same with vacuum cleaners.

I don't understand what you mean about the drain hose.

I have only ever known them to be on the back of an automatic machine. Did you have a top loader before?

Bluevelvetsofa · 24/09/2024 15:42

I wouldn’t have a Zanussi anything. Our dishwasher failed after a couple of years. I got a cheap and cheerful Beko and I’d get another.

A lot of washing machines has a panel down below for opening and closing. Usually there is a filter there and a hose. That option is good if say for example the machine stops working and you need to empty the machine, you can drain it that way. Also there's usually a filter.

I would prefer a machine with a filter and hose.

Also wouldn’t have another Bosch. Has them in the past and lasted ten years. Had one recently and gave up the ghost just out of warranty at two years and three months! Not worth repairing 🤦🏻‍♀️

The old appliances are good. I had some zanussi stuff - washing machine, dishwasher, cooker and the dishwasher is nearly 15 years old and still going strong. The washing machine was 14 or 15. The older appliances were good. I don't know about the new.

I had my heart on a Bosch machine. So many mixed reviews on machines.

I wish I could afford a Miele but I can't.

I have a Bosch and it's great.

I was looking at Bosch and it does appeal to me. It seems to be a budget higher end type of machine. I was looking at a series 4 machine and something that I like is that the hinges in the door and also the lock point thing is metal. A lot of brands make them in plastic and I prefer the metal because it's going to be stronger.

I bought a Hoover one, and it’s been great (a couple of years). 👍

woofwoofandwoof · 24/09/2024 17:16

Highly highly recommend Miele.

woofwoofandwoof · 24/09/2024 17:17

It's worth saving for as it lasts for ever and is repairable unlike lots of cheaper machines that now have sealed drums so can't be repaired at all.

Netcam · 24/09/2024 17:19

I would get the cheapest Miele you can find. We have always got the cheapest Miele model available of fridge, washing machine and dishwasher.

LG Direct Drive purchased a couple of years ago, after the last LG DD last 19 years! Very quiet, good selection of programmes and good price from AO too, who price matched a special offer elsewhere, with no quibbles.

FawnFrenchieMum · 24/09/2024 18:07

I’m loving my Samsung Eco Bubble, replaced my indisit and it’s soooo much better.

Scampuss · 24/09/2024 18:07

I've just switched to AEG after a Bosch which was after a Zanussi, and the AEG is fantastic.

BananaFrogDooby · 24/09/2024 18:08

Look for something with the longest warranty would be my advice: that indicates build quality. And don't waste money on buying a top of the range one with lots of features you'll never use.

Awfeck · 24/09/2024 18:16

A lot of brands are just that, brands. They are made by one manufacturer, for example Electrolux, which makes AEG, Zanussi and John Lewis.

Awfeck · 24/09/2024 18:18

Meant to add, just buy the one you can afford that best meets your need, and with the longest warranty.

Surprised to hear comments about the Bosch.
I was just wondering how much longer ours is likely to last as it’s around 9 years old.
never had any trouble with it.

I’m worried that I’ll be forced to get a smart washing machine next, which I do not want.

The lock point thing may be metal, but the actual lock that it inserts into is plastic and was the first thing to fail on my Bosch. Fortunately it failed fairly early on and I was able to get it replaced under warranty. However it appears to be going the same way again.

I got the wrong end of the stick when I first read your post. I see now what you mean. I also assumed these filters came standard on every machine but I see they don't.

Also check the cycle times. The the new ones are all about eco, which means long. But this really messes with any washing routines if you are used to a shorter cycle length.
