Abbreviations are driving me mad!

AIBU to hate all the abbreviations on this site? (Fully appreciate I’ve just used one of them). Why can’t people just refer to their child, husband, son, daughter, etc? Why the D this and D that? Spend half the time trying to work out who they’re talking about. Is it just me ? ?

OP posts:
hoarahloux · 23/09/2024 17:54

It's when people say DDog that makes me laugh. Really?! 😆

You beat me to that. The most pointless one of them all

OP I'm with you on that. I've never used the 'D' prefix on a post - never will, I just type the word in full

MagicianMoth · 23/09/2024 17:59

Mumsnet didn’t invent them ,it’s an Internet thing. You’ll need to go back in time and tell us off in the 90s https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dear_husband#:~:text=In%20Internet%20slang%2C%20DH%20is,and%20DS%20means%20dear%20son.

If you dont like it then rant on Tattle. You dont enter someones house then take the piss out of it.

My new acronym. It stands for:
Oh! We haven't had one of these threads for ages. @MNHQ can you add it to the list 😁

I’m with you. Absolutely hate them. There have been a few where I’ve just given up trying to work them out.

Ddog, Dcat, Dfish... they're not even quicker to type than the actual words! 😂

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 23/09/2024 18:29

It really doesn't take a great deal of effort or common sense to work them out. Or indeed to click on the link that explains them.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 23/09/2024 18:31

I think it gets confusing when people use the abbreviations to mean something different eg there was a post a week or so back where OP had used DS to mean her sister and DD to mean her dad. It was one of those great long stories and I couldn't be bothered to try to work it all out .

Those kind of posts are fun when it appears they are complaining about their children, son and daughter, being mean to them when it's their adult sister and dad.

One of my favourite MNisms is FOTTFSOFTFOSM.

Not that I ever use it - takes too long to type it correctly 🤣 (or should that be ROFL?)

Good Idea.

As @AllProperTeaIsTheft said, it doesn't take long to work it out, even when there can be a bit of confusion with the odd one.

Abbreviations are not only all over the internet, but all over life too.

Do you not use MOT, NHS, PIN, BBC, etc yourself ? If you do, then why are those acceptable to you, but not 'dd' etc ?

Agreed. DP always raises a smirk.

Pat888 · 23/09/2024 18:37

I think they’re a great idea - otherwise you’d have hubby, OH, beloved, dearest, husband, life partner, etc etc etc ditto for DCs.
D…. Whatever is fine.

Knittedfairies2 · 23/09/2024 18:37

I often have to read the whole post to work out who everybody is; someone was 'annoyed with the GPs' recently and I didn't know whether it was the doctors or her/his parents that had caused the annoyance until I got the gist.

DreamW3aver · 23/09/2024 18:37

Some of it is stupidly twee, ddog etc but most of it isn't Mumsnet specific its been on the internet for at least 25 years

Did you think no one had noticed before?

MonsteraMama · 23/09/2024 18:38

DTortoise had me wheezing once.

I hate them too but it's just my inner pedant rearing her ugly head, so I just don't use them.

Anewuser · 23/09/2024 18:38

It’s when someone says GP, I think they mean the doctor when actually they’re talking about grandparents.
