Has this person blocked me in? Photo - no diagram

I’m the white car, parked on my driveway.

No idea who the van belongs to - it’s not a delivery driver as it’s been there an hour. They are parked over the dropped section, just hard to see with the leaves.

Depends on your drive, you could probably shunt back and forth and get out if there's wiggle room on the other side of your car. It's obnoxious parking on the part of the van though - we used to have a drive like this where inexplicably cars and vans would leave their arses hanging over the edge of the drive and make it really annoying to get out.

Yellowsubmarineunderthesea · 23/09/2024 11:34

Hard to tell from an itty bitty photo but I reckon I could reverse out easily enough

maz210 · 23/09/2024 11:34

He shouldn't be parked over the dropped kerb. You have my sympathies, our next door neighbour had a regular visitor who always overhung our driveway. Why they didn't block the driveway of the person they were actually visiting I'll never know. Particularly annoying as our neighbours knew my husband was an on-call firefighter who often had to sprint out of the house to attend calls.

How much space do you have on the left of the car?

HateMyRubbishBoss · 23/09/2024 11:36

van’s tyre seems bit flat as all

he’s blocking you for sure - how is the other side looking ?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 23/09/2024 11:39

Depends if there's something to the other side of your car that means you can't come out slightly diagonally.

They're parked like a dick though, even if you can get out past them.

It wouldn’t be an easy manoeuvre unfortunately, there’s no more room for me to go forward and barely any room at the sides - I have bins on one and the neighbours card on the other (shared drive)

No saying it’s not doable but it’s infuriating to just not have free access to come and go from my driveway.

People seem to park there constantly, it’s never anyone else they block in.

We have this all the time because of a shortage of parking in our street. Doesn't make it right but we have enough wiggle room to get out, and I always reverse on which makes it easier so it's not a problem but I can't tell from the photo how much wiggle room you have.

EternallyDelighted · 23/09/2024 11:42

x posted. Annoying if you haven't got wiggle room.

AAudreyHorne · 23/09/2024 11:45

To be fair, if you are having to ask on mumsnet if he has blocked your own driveway ... it probably isn't very clear to the person who parked either.
Maybe clear the leaves so the dropped kerb is more obvious?

RossGellersCat · 23/09/2024 11:46

If you can't really turn the I'd say that's blocked in. I'd be inclined to write a note and pop it under their windscreen asking them to be more considerate in future.

CharlotteBog · 23/09/2024 11:55

I don't know, has that driver blocked you in? Can you get out?
It looks like your car is overhanding the pavement a bit, which 1) is wrong and 2) gives you less space to manoeuvre.
You must have some room on at least one side of your car, unless you are climbing in through the boot.
So, you can reverse as far as possible, then use your wiggle room to get in a better position. Or you could ask your neighbour if they don't mind moving their car.
I can see how it's annoying if it happens often; each car thinking 'it's only this once, they can still get out, I won't be long'.

I think it must be clear the other side because OP says she shares the drive with her neighbour.

TemuSpecialBuy · 23/09/2024 11:57

If you want to get off the drive
depends on how much room you have to wiggle out.

if you want to report the arsehole you absolutely can…
our boroughs record for ticketing our blocked drive is 12 mins from the time reported…
they also towed a car once that was there over the weekend

Coruscations · 23/09/2024 12:16

If the problem is bins on one side, can't you move them?

kenidorm · 23/09/2024 12:18

You don't have a dropped kerb at your side?

It's hard to tell if you can get out of there without seeing the whole picture tbh, nobody knows what is surrounding the car with may or may not prevent manoeuvring

Therythmnofmywindchime · 23/09/2024 12:21

Report them, it’s illegal to block a dropped kerb so they’d think twice about parking there again when they’re towed.

It's not as basic as that, who is going to tow them?

User0311 · 23/09/2024 12:24

I wouldn't say you were blocked in you should be able to get out of that space, however I wouldn't be happy with someone parking this close to my drive either!

Notwhatuwanttohear · 23/09/2024 12:25

They have parked over your dropped curb.

Any reason why you don't reverse on as that is much safer?

Coconutter24 · 23/09/2024 12:26

Looking at that photo if you were to reverse on your drive you would easily be able to drive off if someone was to park like that. Obviously they shouldn’t but you say people park there constantly so could you reverse to make it easier for yourself?

whiteswan87 · 23/09/2024 12:28

I'd be tempted to get T bar painted to clearly mark the dropped kerb. Even if you can reverse out, it's annoying that you have to work your way around other people's selfish parking. You have my sympathies! X

The drop is at the neighbours side though

llamali · 23/09/2024 12:29

The highway code says you're supposed to reverse onto your driveway if you can. Can you?

Schoolchoicesucks · 23/09/2024 12:29

If you have someone directing you (for passing traffic as the van is blocking visibility) you should be able to get out. Would hate it if that's a regular occurrence though.

Is your driveway dropped? Hard to see from the photo but looks like the bit where van is parked is dropped and then it raises where you would need to drive across? Is the van parked across someone else's drive?

Can you get lines painted to show where the dropped kerb ends which may discourage cars from parking over them?

isthesolution · 23/09/2024 12:34

I think you can get out. Albeit quite difficult and you absolutely shouldn't have to. But I'd say you aren't blocked in unless you cannot possibly get out.
