When you start turning into your mother (just for fun)

I've just seen Princess Anne on the news, laying a wreath at Arnhem and heard a voice say "Oh dear, her slip is showing" and realised it was mine.

It's exactly what my late DM would have said and I haven't used the term "slip" in over 30 years.

Have you ever found yourself turning into your mother?

I keep a box of greetings cards and wrap in a box under the stairs.

murasaki · 22/09/2024 13:20

I have a cupboard full of plastic bags.

Honestly, my entire adult life has been devoted to not turning into my mother, to a probably unhealthy extent.

Mochudubh · 22/09/2024 13:36

It'll creep up on you and jump out when you least expect it (like Princess Anne's slip).

Had my hair done a bit different, put my glasses on and Mum was looking back (swift change of style followed). Also find myself complaining that some younger family members don't say thank you for presents.

Snap, it's my life's work.

Nowstrong · 22/09/2024 14:00

Oh my... me too. Then it will be my Grandma. Frightening.

Yes, me too - and my sister - and we have a deal to alert the other if there are warning indications.

Gosh I'm also devoted to not turning into my mother.

But sometimes I find myself turning into someone else's mother ..... for instance this morning I heard myself telling my 12 yr old that if she just does 10 mins tidying a day her room wouldn't be in this state......

Mochudubh · 22/09/2024 14:06

I never wear my hair up as I instantly turn into my Granny. I first realised that at about 15 and my Granny was about 70.😮

I sound and walk like my mum. I'm 8 inches taller and have a completely different shape, and I've grown up a million miles from the origin of her own accent. There are so many other ways in which I've grown to be like her, but these physical ones always catch my attention. I love my mum and am glad to share some attributes that will remind me of her later on down the line.

Carrying round an emergency stitch kit. You never know when you'll be caught with a hole that needs repairing 😂
Spare greetings cards
Little packets of tissues in every jacket or bag
Scent diffusers

Saying “ drive carefully.”

Used to make me irate as a late teen. I would spit back “lucky you said that as I was planning to drive recklessly.” Must have made her blood run cold every time.

WmFnKdSg1234 · 22/09/2024 14:09

Yes. I had a lovely mum, so it's lovely to find myself looking like and sounding like her 😊 Although I am trying hard not to gain as much weight post menopause.

I completely understand her stance on certain things now. Wish she was still here.

Westfacing · 22/09/2024 14:11

Long ago when my reply was 'because I said so', in response to my DC asking 'why do I have to do that?'

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 22/09/2024 14:11

My sister found herself saying "let's do a swapsy" in the cantine at work.

Lifestooshort71 · 22/09/2024 14:24

My mum ended up being outspoken, too loud, a bit judgmental and had strong opinions. I'm proud to have turned into my mum.

This👆😁

I used to laugh at my mums 'isms' said I'd never turn into her. Then she died and when I turned 40 I suddenly noticed not only did I look like her but I said things she said. I quite like it, she was a lovely human so I'm quite pleased to be like her.

Falderalagain · 22/09/2024 14:43

I now have my mum's telephone voice.

jujuly · 22/09/2024 18:24

I move and adjust my glasses when they slip down my nose just like my mother. No matter how many adjustments I ask them to make at the opticians they slip and I clock the mannerisms and 'how' she did it each time I do . . .

JohnTheRevelator · 22/09/2024 18:40

I was very close to my DM,who died nearly 13 years ago. So when I looked in the mirror one morning recently and saw my DMs face looking back at me,I didn't know whether to be pleased or horrified!

That's lovely. I feel I'm turning into my dad 😅

I have the same deal with my daughter as have no siblings.
