Heated airer drying time

Considering getting a heated airer.

We have had a dehumidifier set up but have recently moved house and it doesn't seem to work as well here. Perhaps because I can't shut the door of the room it's in.

How long does your heated airer take to dry a load of washing? I don't know if I can justify the price but it's just taken nearly 2 days to dry this load with the dehumidifier.

I have one which I’m actually contemplating selling as it’s just a pain.

one load which consisted of underwear, a couple of pairs of shorts, pyjamas and T-shirts took almost 24
hours. I had to take the cover off and rearrange about 6 times as the parts not touching the bars just don’t get dry. At the end the shorts with pockets were still not properly dry. Do you have no room for an economical tumble dryer?

i also have a ceiling pulley airer and the clothes are almost dry after 24 hours on that then I bung in the dryer for 15 mins.

hellosun20 · 22/09/2024 08:04

Ah that's a shame. Which brand do you have? The reviews I've said seem to suggest that brands require you to move the clothes around. Sounds like a total pain!

We do have a ( very expensive) tumble dryer but I am convinced it shrinks clothes so I only use it for towels and bedding.

I love the ceiling dryers but we don't have space for one in the new house. They are brilliant though.

Love my heated airer, wouldn't be without it as wouldn't get enough clothes dry without it! I would say that if you lay flat one or two items it will take a couple of hours, if you hang a load of washing, I think it takes about a day. I must admit though, I tend to put mine on and leave it until needed so can't ve certain on the timings.

hellosun20 · 22/09/2024 08:40

@Sunsetsarethebest that's good. Where is yours from?

We have the Lakeland one. I tend to hang laundry on it in the early evening and then it’s dry in the morning.

CatamaranViper · 22/09/2024 08:45

Hated mine. Chucked it last year.

It was not much better than a standard clothes horse and cost more to run. Id bought it to try and not use the tumble dryer as much but absolutely pointless.

RitzyMcFee · 22/09/2024 08:54

I've got one from Lakeland and I love it. It dries a load in less than a day.

sausageupanalley · 22/09/2024 08:55

I use a heated airer with cover with a de humidifier next to it and most items are dry overnight but thick jumpers or jeans might be a bit longer but 24 hours max. It's so good but takes up a lot of room. It makes the room nice and toasty though so don't need the heating on in there.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 22/09/2024 08:57

You need the cover on it, we have the lakeland one and a whole load will be dry in 12hrs or so

shellyleppard · 22/09/2024 08:58

I have a heated airer and its absolutely hopeless!!!! As pp said unless its touching the rails it doesn't dry the washing at all. Its been relegated to the shed and I'm using the old one 🥴

FlingThatCarrot · 22/09/2024 09:02

What type of dehumidifier do you have?

Mine will dry a 9kg load in about 3hrs. Door shut in my utility room- much faster if its warm or the heating is on. It is worth investing is a good one with a flap that swings.

Had the heated airer but found it a faff and no where near as good as dehumidifier. The dehumidifier under a normal airer with the tent thing on top would be better than the heated airer.

hellosun20 · 22/09/2024 09:03

@CatamaranViper which brand did you have?

@shellyleppard which one do you have?

OP posts:
hellosun20 · 22/09/2024 09:05

@FlingThatCarrot it's a meaco one which was recommended on here. Wasn't cheap! We can't close the door in the drying area so I think that's the problem

I never understand why so many people own a tumble dryer and then don't use it.

In Which testing the heated airer only used slightly less electricity than the tumble dryer (condenser type, conventional). If not all the washing fits on the airer at once, they found it would still use more than a tumble dryer. Dehumidifier just straight up uses more electricity than a tumble dryer.

If you can afford the initial outlay of a heat pump tumble dryer it will cost far less per load than any other mode except air drying.

Always use the low heat setting and make sure the washing you're putting in has been well spun, then nothing shrinks.

shellyleppard · 22/09/2024 09:07

@hellosun20 it was one I got from eBay, think it was originally from Aldi? Got a second hand one in case I didn't like it Lol

hellosun20 · 22/09/2024 09:10

@deplorabelle it's not a cost issue. I really do think ours shrinks clothes on the normal setting! I'd happily tumble dry everything if it didn't do this.

I think the trick with heated airers is to cover them and just leave them alone. Everytime the cover is removed for rearranging, the hot air is lost and has to be built up again

Shinyandnew1 · 22/09/2024 09:12

We have a Meaco dehumidifier and it seems to do absolutely nothing to help dry clothes! I wouldn’t recommend it. It certainly doesn’t dry anything in 3 hours!

I wonder how much a heated airer or dehumidifier costs to run for 12/24 hours or however long they take, compared to an energy efficient tumble dryer running for 40 minutes?

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 22/09/2024 09:15

Hated mine, got rid. Even with a cover they are just crap.

I don't find this at all. All my stuff dries whether it's touching the bars or not.

My dd has a pair of really thick and wide jeans with cargo pocket on and I do hand those over two top bars in the middle but they dry.

XiCi · 22/09/2024 09:23

I have a John lewis one. I've never known anything take longer than a few hours if it's covered. Covering it makes all the difference though.

Tralalalalalah · 22/09/2024 09:26

I love mine - also Lakeland. Clothes dry in a day with sheet over. Lakeland have an eBay shop, so mine has a slightly wonky shelf but works perfectly.

NailsHairNipsHeels · 22/09/2024 09:31

Do you do an extra spin on your washing?
This plus a normal clothes horse my clothes are dry over night. Jeans maybe take 24hrs
I only really tumble dry bedding and towels.
I also hang washing out pretty much every time I do washing. My rule is if the ground is dry it goes out even if just a few hours it's better than nothing

the energy efficient tumble dryers are heat pumps, they need 3-4 hours to dry a load. But are usually still cheaper than a heated airer,
