What's your experience of Earthing (Grounding) mats?

IfIhadMyTime · 21/09/2024 23:50

Hi all,
I have a few issues such as trying to get quality sleep, jumpy legs and generally feeling tired when it's not warranted.

I've looked at various articles regarding Earthing Mats, and what they can do for you.

In the warmer months, I go barefoot as much as possible, but I won't be doing that (at all) much, with the chilly weather arriving.

Has anyone out there got an EM, and did it help you, and which brand/site did you use?

TIA

I got an earthing bedsheet from a company called Groundwell. I can honestly say I sleep better and feel more energetic in the day. The science is there. Jumpy legs can be an indicator of low magnesium-- I would try an evening supplement of magnesium citrate, or magnesium malate - (up to 400mg).

dothehokeycokey · 22/09/2024 00:08

I've also been doing some grounding mat research myself as I also get jumpy fidgety legs that are twitchy and nervy which is so annoying.

Anyhow as a kid I constantly had my shoes and socks off.

My mum and Nan constantly berated me for walking round bare foot and as an adult I still especially in the summer have this thing where early in the mornings I'm outside walking around barefoot in the garden on the patio

I often take my shoes off and I hate closed in shoes.
I've also worn croc/mule type shoes so I can slip them off

I'd be really interested in peoples experiences with the mats

dothehokeycokey · 22/09/2024 00:09

@IfIhadMyTime
Forgot to say I'm currently using a magnesium butter that I rub into the soles of my feet at night (when I remember) it definitely makes a difference when I do it every night.

maplelatte · 22/09/2024 00:10

What do the mats claims to do? Just read a product description from one website and it sounds a lot like pseudoscience to me.

When I research anything, I don’t just look at one site… I prefer to compare, and then if most of the sites name the same list of potential benefits, then that’s my benchmark.

I take a magnesium supplement daily, and I also have a magnesium cream/lotion,
im not sure that it’s helping my jumpy legs… so hoping EM will help that as well as the sleep prob.

Thank you for the replies posted so far.

The health benefits have been scientifically proven. This is the best 15 minutes you’ll ever watch.

Hi OP, I too have wondered about the benefits of using a grounding sheet

In fact it was only last night (whilst not being able to sleep. !!) that I came across Grounded Wellness.

I was interested to read that they also sell grounding socks that you wear whilst using the grounding sheet.

As well as keeping your feet warm, the socks have silver thread running through them, which the GS also has.

Wearing the socks in conjunction with the GS, benefits better sleep (they say), the socks themselves have no grounding cables etc, so I wouldn't have thought they are beneficial without the GS.

As a side note, if you haven't already read, when you buy a GS they should have at least 5% silver thread.

I've found over the months of research, GS with the 5%, and one with 8%, and one with 10%.

Be aware that some sites are based in the USA, so as well as the cost of the GS, you'll be paying shipping fees, and import duties.

I hope when you do find a GS, that your sleep becomes much improved.

Are we in a time loop?
@IfIhadMyTime you're talking to yourself from last year

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/02/2025 08:58

Look for the Sliced Bread programme on BBC Sounds which discusses these and pretty much debunks the whole thing.

tilligan · 17/02/2025 09:05

The radio 4 podcast, "sliced bread" has an episode on grounding mats, well worth a listen!

Sorry, I have obviously lost track of my past username.

I have chronic memory problems, and I hope that my faux pas will be forgiven.

Whatever Ive typed under whatever username, I hope that it serves to help someone.

Are you low in iron? That can cause jumpy kegs, tiredness and even memory problems. Worth chatting to your GP?

Sorry, I have obviously lost track of my past username.

OP, you were using the exact same username though! It also highlights in green who when the OP posts message!😕

Have you had blood tests to check for anaemia, thyroid, peri, other deficiencies? etc?

ElleneAsanto · 17/02/2025 09:25

Mild placebo effect for the guillible (who remember nothing from basic GCSE Science). An expensive gimmick.

Hmmm, I have changed my username since Sept last year, and I've found out that Mumsnet site doesn't enable you to use more than one username on the same thread.
So I've obviously shown myself to be a complete idiot....
I'm not actually an idiot, I'm unfortunately suffering memory problems.
I have indeed had an explanation for my unreliable memory.
To those suggesting that I am maybe deficient in iron (for instance), I've had loads of blood tests, as I do have a low thyroid function that is monitored annually.
So any deficiencies would've shown up.

Thank you for the suggestions anyway.

I have listened since, to the debunking of GS, via a pp link to Sliced Bread.

I must say, I'm very disappointed after listening.
I so wanted to know that a GS would help anything from poor sleep, to restless legs, or any other pain from inflammation.

What I don't get though, is how so many people are reporting that they actually ARE feeling benefits from GS.
Surely they can't ALL be feeling a placebo affect?

Unfortunately, not everyone is a believer in everything, even if it is catagorically true without question. There are millions of people out there that still believe the Earth is flat.

There are people that don't believe processed foods cause Cancer as thats all their family eats and no one has ever had Cancer. On the flip side there are thousands of people out there who have cured Cancer, literally reversed it completely, by fasting; by eating nothing until the digestive system shuts down and moves into the Autophagy stage and eats all the bad cells in the body. This has also been backed by science and proven thousands of times for decades, but still remains a pseudoscience currently with many debunkers.

Very respected and decorated scientists have stood up infront of thousands of other scientists and have scientifically backed grounding sheets. Why would they do this unless this is a credible therapy?

All 'proven' Science today was psuedoscience once upon a time. Who is correct? Those who explain grounding sheets using science based explanations, or those who debunk? Debunkers themselves have debunked every single scientific breakthrough society now accepts as absolute truth. Should bacon be eaten with tomato sauce or brown? Should tomato sauce be kept in the fridge or cupboard? Do we love marmite? Do we hate marmite? Who knows and each to their own I suppose!

Aromatherapy does nothing for many, but eases the pain and suffering and enhances the well being of countless others. Same with meditation and mindfulness. Science to some, pseudo to others.

Having suffered from some ailments in recent years I have looked into grounding sheets and have used them for the past month or so. I have seen instant results. As has my wife. She immediately began having deep sleeps and waking up clear headed from her very first uses of the sheet, whereas usually she has broken interrupted sleep due to perimenopause and often wakes up with headaches. These symptoms disappeared overnight with the introduction of a grounding sheet. I myself have noticed a measured reduction in blood pressure (I test it daily) and I do wake up more refreshed and clear headed. I still think "this is crazy" but the evidence is there for us and our bodies.

Other people may not be wired the same way, and may report no results. Our logic was if they don't work, we still have a comfortable bed sheet. If they do work, it is a Brucey Bonus! So it is not a waste of money of you buy one. Illnesses in tribes that do not wear shoes and who are literally in touch with the earth are significantly less than the rest of the planet. Obviously, there are many factors, but grouding is considered a major factor with some scientists.

What can't be denied though, is that our bodies build up an electrical charge which in some people leads to illness. When you connect to the ground and ground yourself, you do receive free electrons from the earth and your body's electrical charge reduces. You can prove this with an electricians multi meter. You can read the electrical charge your body is giving off and you can touch a good quality grounding sheet and show the immediate reduction in electrical charge. Something scientifcally tangible is happening for sure, I suppose it is the outcome it leads to that people ultimately question.

At the end of the day if you believe in grounding, you have nothing to lose by buying a full sheet that covers a whole bed. It is a bed sheet after all. We were sceptical and dived in and now we have proof to ourselves it works. It is a thing!

Good luck OP and apologies for my ramblings, I appreciate I went off on a few tangents.

Thank you for your clear and considered post.

I am going to proceed with trying to purchase.

im looking for a U.K. site, as I wish to avoid huge shipping fees from - say USA, plus of course import tax or customs duty.

I’ll look up reviews on Trustpilot, and see which appeals to what I believe is the right one for me.
Ideally I’d like a GS with at least 5% silver thread, but I’ve read of those that have a higher count.

Again thank you for your input.

Splendid. Have you got ANY of the “decorated” scientists proclaiming their validity?

tryingtomakesenseof · 28/08/2025 22:17

I’ve got the one from grounding well.. it made me feel very sleepy when I first started using it (10 mins a day to start with then tried to build it up) however I wasn’t during it consistently as don’t often sit down everyday lmao so now I lie on it overnight. I think im
detoxing massively as I’m either sleeping much deeper or I’m a bit restless. I’ve had more energy during the day for sure. I’ve recommended it to friends and family and 2 people have bought it and feel its of benefit too!

blacksax · 28/08/2025 22:47

"All 'proven' Science today was pseudoscience once upon a time"

No it wasn't. It was a hypothesis.

The term 'pseudo' means: fake, false or not genuine. It is often used to describe something that has the appearance of the real thing but isn't, and is also used to describe beliefs and theories presented as scientific but which are completely unsubstantiated.

MackenCheese · 28/08/2025 23:27

My rheumatologist thinks grounding sheets are a load of nonsense.

Hi @IfIhadMyTime I know this is an old thread, but I was looking into this topic and wondered if you did get a grounding sheet and if so, what your experience has been?
