Why would someone smell like burnt toast?

Every now and again, a person I visit smells strongly of burnt toast.
He doesn't eat toast or anything similar.

It isn't a bad smell, just odd.
When he enters a room, it arrives suddenly, as if someone has been cooking. As far as I know he is in decent health. He is 65 and pretty fit.

It went away over a few weeks months ago and during a discussion he mentioned having to shower more. He isn't on a low income or suffering mental health issues, but I wondered if there could be a connection?

Has anyone heard of such a smell on a person? It's kind of like food cooking, not nasty or bad, but strange.

Are you having a stroke?

GodspeedJune · 20/09/2024 22:56

I’ve known urine to smell like burnt toast if leaked on clothes.

KibbeMe · 20/09/2024 23:21

Could you be pregnant?
I randomly smelled burned toast last time I was

Is this person taking any supplements? My OH started to smell different after a few weeks of taking them.
Once he stopped them, the smell went away.

KibbeMe · 20/09/2024 23:36

i am past meno, not in a relationship.

I only smell this when i visit him, it is quite distinctive. Wondered if anyone might have experienced this.

Could it just be stale cooking smells, which can cling to clothes/hair sometimes?

As far as I am aware, nothing different.
This small arrived about 3 months ago.
On one occasion when I mentioned it he admitted to not having showered for a while. After he had showered it was gone.

Then again, I have never previously associated burnt food smells with a lack of heigene. It's puzzling.

There are cases of people being able to smell illness in other people before they are aware of the illness themselves. I think a lady could smell Parkinsons (or something similar- I need to Google again) buy not sure about burnt toast specifically

Grumpycashier · 20/09/2024 23:41

I sometimes think people's feet smell like crushed digestive biscuits. Really put me off biscuits. Could it be along those lines? Weird AF but ya no

KibbeMe · 20/09/2024 23:42

Illness can smell. Is he feeling at all unwell?

GalaticalFarce · 20/09/2024 23:43

Has he been to a Turkish barber and had his hair "burned" ?

No, he is up to date with medicals, etc.
My only conclusion is showering, it most definitely vanished after he told me he had showered.
He isn't depressed or suffering any mental health issues and is economically ok. I think he has an aversion to showering, but even if so, it is an odd smell!

Is his kitchen small/poorly ventilated? It could just be cooking smells lingering in his hair or clothing fibers. If he doesn’t ventilate the room or shower often - maybe he wears the same jumper or trousers a lot? - it could just be slightly burnt oven dinners.

Honestly though some people just have a ‘scent’.

BibbityBobbityToo · 21/09/2024 00:02

Is it definitely him or could it be an air fresher or reed diffuser in another room wafting through the hall when he open the door?

Any old wiring or appliances smoldering, kettle overheating?

Could be his grill isn't clean? So when he's cooking something else on it, the smell of "toast" is clinging to him. Whatever crumbs or crap that's in the grill is burning its way down.

desperatedaysareover · 21/09/2024 00:21

I reckon my dad sometimes smells of toast but something more, it's a sort of older man smell. I've smelled it in passing on the street from other men in a similar age bracket, and in taxis driven by older drivers. To be clear it's not BO. It's also not unpleasant, my DD loves the smell of her Papa. I remember reading that there's a soap older people in Japan use to dispel the smell (want to say persimmon soap but might be talking nonsense).

It's biology. Hormones, lipid acid. Perfectly normal.
