Anyone know about window cleaners and their long poles?

We've just started paying for a window cleaner after a few years of me doing my best. They were full of webs and a bit of a state. I was so excited we could finally pay someone to clean them, but I've come home and there are dried water marks on all of the downstairs windows and conservatory. Is this supposed to happen? Why aren't they polished up after the pole? What do I need to say to him? Very disappointed.

This happens regularly with ours as well. AngryThey take about 2.5 minutes and I'm thinking of giving them the boot. But I can't imagine another lot being any better 🤷🏻‍♀️

Differentstarts · 20/09/2024 18:53

Yanbu I'm also really disappointed when he doesn't have a long pole or know how to use it I feel your pain.

Orders76 · 20/09/2024 18:54

Same, poles are to do with health and safety rather than climbing?

But they don't clean properly and leave streaks

Flashcardsagain · 20/09/2024 18:54

In the 80s you'd just have dangled your kid out by the ankles with a sponge.

They use purified water whatever that means but they dont squeegee it like in the olden days so you can get marks. Theres still the odd fella about with a ladder and bucket but the game has moved on, for the worse!

DadJoke · 20/09/2024 18:56

I thought this was a follow-up to the boat thread!

WonderingWanda · 20/09/2024 18:58

I have my own extending pole, it has a sponge sort of attachment which I use with water and HG window cleaner. Then I spray with the hose, then I attach the squeegee end to it. It does make my arms ache but it also makes them reasonably clean and sparkly. We have dreadful leaded windows so sometimes I need to lean out the window with a microfiber cloth too.

ForKeenLimeOtter · 20/09/2024 19:14

You're never going to get the same finish as someone doing it properly but unfortunately the long reach pole means they can do a house in 15 minutes and move on. They should be using deionised water to prevent smears.

Yes this, they may not be using the right water. Ours are cleaned with a pole and they dry without marks.

Sorry to hijack but I’m in the market for a window cleaning pole. Which one do you use please.

But you cant really get a good purchase when its time to squeegee the upstairs windows.

BobbyBiscuits · 20/09/2024 19:26

My mate had a window cleaner that was pretty crap but cheap, one time he turned up so severely under the influence of what turned out to be various benzos, cannabis, opiates both legal and otherwise, and huge amounts of alcohol That he fell off his ladder. I think they feared for their insurance and his safety so severely he wasn't given further employment.

He strangely just seemed unconcerned and unharmed like he falls off ladders daily?!

I once had a sham window cleaner trying to rob my workplace. They fucked off but next day some scumbag snuck in and nicked my money and a camera. Obviously connected.

I'm sure decent 'fenestry maintenance consultants' do exist. Lol. I've just not found one yet.

1twa · 20/09/2024 20:11

It's probably the wrong water....(but not deionised), they should be using reverse osmosis filtered water - this will leave a streak free finish because all minerals e.g.calcium have been removed.
Maybe they're cutting corners and just using plain water.

Presumably you are cleaning windows on a single storey house as it only extends 10 feet?

Avocadono · 20/09/2024 20:19

Our window cleaner doesn't leave marks when he does ours like that. We pay £15 for a largish 5 bedroom house.

ZippyDenimBear · 20/09/2024 20:22

A good window cleaner with a pole system does a great job! The kit in the back costs them thousands to purify the water and the finish should be streak free.

There are lazy ones and cowboys about tho.

If you aren't happy with that one,.try another with good reviews

goingtotown · 20/09/2024 20:24

If there's water marks left on the glass it'll be from using tap water. Window cleaning with a pole should be used with deionised water.

Mine uses a long pole:

With the use of De Ionized- High Reach Pole System

they dry lovely. One doesn't, I think there must be a kink in the rubber or something. So there's a few drip marks. Haven't been bothered enough to investigate🥲

i have 4 large sets of windows & a large skylight. Once a month £11

From other threads I've learnt how much prices vary nationally, but just to say the proper long pole special water malarchy doesn't need to be expensive.

DeliciousApples · 20/09/2024 20:41

I got my pole out of Aldi ages ago. It attaches to my hose. Seems ok. Saves having to get a window cleaner.

The professionals should use deionised water with a water fed pole.

If you are getting poor results I'd complain as they shouldn't be doing them like that. Either they've run out of special water and using ordinary stuff or they aren't doing it right.

Check with your neighbours and see if they are fed up too. Maybe the thought of six of you or whatever neighbours potentially dumping him and going to a competitor might encourage him to do it right.

No but I know about Greengrocers and their juicy melons.

Normal 2 storey house. If the pole is 10.5ft, then add on another foot for the sponge or squeegee then the fact you're holding it up high above yourself then youre at about 18 feet which covers upstairs windows ok.

*window cleaners and their long poles"

Is this code?

kiwiane · 20/09/2024 21:00

I’ve got a Docapole - there are a couple of different lengths - mine goes to 7m and it has different accessories.

BooneyBeautiful · 20/09/2024 21:02

Am so glad I have a traditional window cleaner who climbs up a ladder. The windows always look lovely and clean after he has been, plus he does lots of odd jobs too. I would be lost without him!
