I'm watching Yes Minister on DVD, not much changes does it! 😂 So much seems relevant today.

I rewatched it about 3 years ago and it was all relevant.
I remember at the time that Thatcher loved it and said it was very close to the bone.

Waterboatlass · 19/09/2024 20:09

I watched some, not full series, when a civil servant (I'm now retraining) and it was so familiar!! Uncanny! Would love a remake! Similarly the thick of it was right on the nose.

MargaretThursday · 19/09/2024 20:09

Politics stays relevant.
The comments of politics in some of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, especially Iolanthe, are still relevant.
"They have to leave their brains outside and vote just as the leaders tell 'em to."

dodobookends · 19/09/2024 20:14

Brilliant stuff, isn't it?

AgileGreenSeal · 19/09/2024 20:18

I’ve watched them all, plus Yes, Prime Minister. Very funny. Lovely characters.

Try The Thick of It for another, more modern take. I used to work in government. It's depressingly realistic.

Jasmin71 · 19/09/2024 20:26

Absolutely love it, especially Humphrey. I have all the DVD sets.

EatTheBastard · 19/09/2024 20:28

Bloody brilliant! Sheer genius

All3DogsandMe · 19/09/2024 20:30

I have a horrible sort of crush on Sir Humphrey. Could never admit this irl!

Pebbles16 · 19/09/2024 20:30

Absolutely and depressingly all still relevant

ScottBakula · 19/09/2024 20:37

I absolutely love the show , it's witty , sharp and still relevant.

It's repeated on BBC radio sounds about once a year.
The radio version is taken straight from TV so occasionally there are silences that would be a bit annoying if you didn't know that Jim Hacker was giving Bernard one of his looks 😀

DeliciousApples · 19/09/2024 20:37

The best one is about what type of individuals read the various newspapers.
OMG hilarious.
Especially as one of the actors nearly laughs but just holds it together. Fabulous!

AnneLovesGilbert · 19/09/2024 20:42

Where are you all watching it? I looked for it recently and could only find crappy half versions on YouTube. Haven’t had a dvd player in years sadly.

Figment1982 · 19/09/2024 20:50

@AnneLovesGilbert There is one episode of Yes Prime Minister on Iplayer at the moment, and I think all of the radio version of Yes Minister are currently on BBC Sounds.

I love it so so much. I do have them all on DVD and in fact I'm going to have to go and buy a new DVD player as our last one broke but I have a few things I have not been able to find anywhere online!

It's here if you have amazon . £9 for series 1 ( 7 episodes) very good value imo.

Sandwichgen · 19/09/2024 20:53

All3Dogs, I have seen Sir Humphrey's bum. It wasn't special

GrumpyPanda · 19/09/2024 20:57

Ww watched it back in rhe day as part of graduate classes in public administration. Not even in the UK. It's legend.

newtlover · 19/09/2024 21:01

it is brilliant
they were showing it on BBC2 recently I think? may be on Iplayer?

KentnotClarke · 19/09/2024 21:09

It's amazing

TeaHagTeaBag · 19/09/2024 21:12

I have it on audible and listen to it about once a year and it's brilliant, best value audio I own.

Was remembering that episode the other day!
Just watched it on YouTube. Still howlingly funny.

wastingtimeonhere · 20/09/2024 22:11

I'm working my way through the boxset, I was early teens when it was originally screened and didn't really get it, so didn't realise how brilliant it was, after watching all the shit going on after 40 years I find it really spot on!

I watched Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister when they aired (they were on the ABC in Australia, where we used to get the best British shows). Watched them again recently on BritBox. Glorious series. Paul Eddington, Nigel Hawthorne, Derek Fowlds, RIP.

NewName24 · 21/09/2024 00:47

@Waterboatlass there is no need to re-make it, as it is still as spot on today as it was 40 years ago.
You watch an episode and it could have been written in the last couple of years.

The casting, the acting and delivery was superb, but the writing is just sublime.
