Recently for first time did a m&s shop and I've eaten half what I normally eat as I seem to be full for longer after eating the same meals I woukd normally eat and I barely even have much of an appetite. Could this really be Down to higher quality and fresher food and less chemicals making me require and desire less food

I think their raw ingredients are similar in price and quality to other supermarkets' premium brands.

I suppose it depends what you're buying. The quality of some ingredients are never as poor as the cheapest budget supermarket items.

Things like bread from M&S are higher quality.

Are you talking about the bakery bread? I’m always on the lookout for decent bread but all the packaged stuff I’ve looked at in M&S is the same crap as any other supermarket (not looked at bakery ingredients).

WitchyBits · 16/09/2024 19:09

My best friend used to work in a vegetable processing factory and sent me photos of a a rat made child veg tray badge and the only difference between the Lidl one and the m and s was that the second had mushrooms and the labels were different. £2.50 price difference. Don't get me wrong, I love m and s and spend£150-200 every few months there but the vast maturity of my normal shopping is done in Aldi and Lidl. The quality is great, the price is affordable and its local to me. The fields where the seasonal Aldi veg is grown is within a mile from me.

The fresh food tends to come from the same place e.g. potatoes will all come from the same field but the prettiest/most uniform will all go to Waitrose, then m&S, then Sainsbury's down to Asda, Aldi etc. With meat the cheaper just gets more water added to bulk it up. So basically all the same stuff. Not sure about ready meals but there's no way quality is such a difference that 2 chicken tenders is a full day of food. Just a coincidence and you're not hungry today.

But maybe I was thinking I was also full from yesterday's meals still

In my experience the more ‘proper’ food you eat and the less UPF you consume the less of an appetite you’ll have. Don’t get me wrong - I still get hungry for my 3 meals a day but it definitely cuts out the constant snacking and cravings etc

BeFancyRubyReader · 16/09/2024 19:13

To all that are saying stuff is same factory same quality e.t.c it's really or not. I have shopper asda and aldi my whole life. Now I have money decided to switch to m&s thinking it was not even gonna be much different but it really is the quality is way nicer on most things not everything but at least 80-90%. Also, it's not even that much more expensive just buying a basic ingredient shop, if you throw in some premium ready meals and biscuits/snacks it can rack thr price up quickly as these can be expensive.

The new Wegovy has been found! M and S sitting on a goldmine.

Surprise50 · 16/09/2024 19:18

@WitchyBits a rat made child veg tray badge - I mean, I don’t really want to eat rats, mushrooms added or not 🤔😁😁

ForKeenLimeOtter · 16/09/2024 19:20

A fresh Aldi chicken compared to an M&S one is vastly different. You pay a lot for the quality, so it depends what you want/need/can afford but I prefer to eat less budget meat and occasionally have good quality.

Some things you'd struggle to tell the difference in quality with but things like bread, ready meals, meat and fish are generally much better quality from M&S.

That doesn't mean budget ones don't taste better as they tend to have more sugar, sweeteners, salt, saturated fats.

BeFancyRubyReader · 16/09/2024 18:47

Even today I had just 2 small chicken tenders from m&s for lunch no breakfast and I'm not even eating any dinner as I just have no appetite

Even if the chicken was the most organically raised and pure fed chickens, 2 tenders wouldn't keep you full for the whole day.

It's not the chicken. It's just you. You just don't have much appetite right now

I really have not noticed M and s being any nicer

But then again I don't tend to buy 'ready meals'

I guess it depends what you’re comparing it to. I’ve never been to Aldi or Lidl so I don’t know what the quality is like. I sometimes shop at Tesco but never the ‘value’ ranges for meat. I always try and buy the best quality meat I can afford, wherever I’m shopping. I tend to get our meat from a local butchers, which IMO is better quality (and generally cheaper) than M&S. I don’t buy ready meals so can’t compare them.

No more so than any other supermarket's 'extra special' range.

@WitchyBits sent me photos of a a rat made child veg tray badge

Please share the photos here, because I'd love to know what this was!!! 🤔

This is probably true . And if you are comparing fresh free range chicken with cheap imported frozen stuff which has added water then the former would be more filling .

GingerPirate · 16/09/2024 19:53

Funny that, OP, I think it really is significantly better.

Sticklebrrick · 16/09/2024 20:15

M&S all the way. I only buy meat & fish (raw and cooked) from there and their fruit is excellent.

The ready meals are really very different from other super markets...read the ingredients lists....far less of the UPF products in them, often none.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/09/2024 20:25

@Calliopespa my H calls me the M&S queen- and I agree with you -

landris · 16/09/2024 20:26

Perhaps your subconscious is aware that the food is more expensive, and your body is responding to that. The human body is a funny thing sometimes.

My DH jokes that I have M and S shares. He calls a visit there “ driving up the value of our secret investment.”

At least I hope he is joking or he will pretty disappointed at some point. 🙁

Yes and hydrogenated oil promises .

It really is good food ( just driving up my secret investment here…)

It’s not really the ready meals that are better. Well actually I’ve only tried a handful. The gratin is good. It’s the quality of the meat, fish and fruit and veg. I also like their cheese.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/09/2024 20:40

@Calliopespa I know- when we lived in Copenhagen for 20
Months the 3 shops I really missed were M&S , TK Maxx and Boots ( mainly because you can't buy many drugs 'off the shelf' in Denmark - I couldn't believe you could only buy unbranded ibruprofen, paracetamol or codeine - impossible to buy stuff like lemsip or various lotions and potions we take for granted.

I'm intrigued by the rat made child veg tray bake.
