Is there such a thing as a basic stretching class (that isn't yoga)

I hate yoga and hate pilates and hate anything mystical (hello tai chi). Would like to just be taken through a gentle stretching class that does not subscribe to any philosophy or deeper spiritual meaning. Does such a thing even exist?

I’d like to know this too. I want to maintain my joint mobility

Band work . Strenght traning . Physeo exercises for muscle condition. I guess.

My local gym has classes called flexi-stretch that are basically simple yoga moves - maybe something like that?

What about callanetics Callanetics is an exercise system created by Callan Pinckney that uses small, precise movements to improve muscle tone and posture. It's known for its gentle but effective approach, focusing on strengthening the body's deeper muscles.

My gym does a flex and stretch class. I've not tried it yet but ive heard its really good

TwelfthOfNever · 06/06/2025 14:31

You should be able to find a completely non-woo just-about-the-physicality yoga class easily enough, they're by far the majority that I've looked into. I can't stand the tedious mysticism either.

HappyToSmile · 06/06/2025 14:33

Our gym does a stretch and flex class. There are yoga stretches in it though, but not only yoga poses.
There are a fair few online (youtube) too

Chasingsquirrels · 06/06/2025 14:35

Does pilates have a philosophy or deeper spiritual meaning?

I've just started doing it using an app, and it basically is doing what you've described albeit not a 'class' just a series of exercises.

Dox9 · 06/06/2025 14:36

Our gym does a foam roller class that's meant to be gentle stretching. There's also a flexibility and posture class but that was quite like yoga in my opinion.

ConstanceMartensCat · 06/06/2025 14:51

Check out the Pliability app.

My local leisure centre has a stretch and tone class. It's lovely.

Sajacas · 06/06/2025 15:10

If you fancy online take a look at YogaBody, they offer a Stretch course.
Can't add the link but a google of yoga body will get the right page.

I did one a few years ago and found it very good. Physiology not woo.

caramac04 · 06/06/2025 15:24

Our local leisure centre offers Body Balance. Stretching and balancing to improve posture, core and balance. Will help guard against falls when at the age people do fall.

Manchesteruser · 06/06/2025 16:27

My gym does a simple stretch class. It's my favourite class.

Dishdelish · 06/06/2025 16:29

Body balance pulls from all 3 you mentioned which I don’t think constitutes subscribing to a belief system. It is a Les Mills program.

BeNiceWhenItsFinished · 06/06/2025 16:31

Adult beginners ballet class?

This. I’ve done yoga for nearly 30 years and the overwhelming majority of classes I’ve attended in numerous different places in five countries were just physical stuff, no spirituality.

There’s an app called Downdog (subscription) which is technically a yoga app but it isn’t ‘mystical’ in anyway and you can choose which style you would like to do and there’s a choice for just stretching! I use it before exercising or to wind down.

So does mine (maybe I know you 😉).

MarthaLou · 06/06/2025 16:49

If you’re interested in online or apps, the Bend app is really good. Also worth googling Roger Framptpn - he has a website with really good videos and programmes.

ZiggyPlaysGuitarrr · 06/06/2025 16:59

My David Lloyd does a class called Conditioning for Wellness. Lots of stretching, small movements, but constant movement and no spiritual side. It has elements of physio, pilates and dance. It's my favourite class

Twelvetimes · 06/06/2025 17:01

The weekly yoga class I go to at my local leisure centre is woo-free. It is just about the yoga poses.

VenusClapTrap · 06/06/2025 17:05

My gym does a Stretch and Mobility class. It’s great. There’s also Movement Mechanics class which I believe is similar, but harder, but I haven’t tried that yet because it’s always fully booked.

ScrummyDiva2 · 06/06/2025 18:05

Look up Tom Morrison on YouTube. He has lots of videos on stretches for different parts of body.
