Lifting weights and doing body weight exercise eg Pilates seems to be the health obsession right now along with protein

I am a yes but only started this year. (Always focussed on cardio before)

Yes, I love it. I feel so much stronger than all the years I’ve spent doing running and cardio, my back doesn’t hurt anymore, my posture is better, and if I can keep it up I’ll keep osteoporosis at bay in a few years too. No down sides.

notacooldad · 16/09/2024 13:37

Yes.

Zizanna · 16/09/2024 13:38

No. I only do cardio. I do quite a lot of exercise, but I do what I enjoy which is a bit of cardio in the gym and lots of swimming.

Yes.

I have changed my training a lot to me low impact. I used to love a cardio sweat and feeling slightly sick at the end but it’s not good for me and weights and pilates is.

missfliss · 16/09/2024 13:38

Yes

Arctangent · 16/09/2024 13:39

When I exercised, yes I lifted weights. I'd love to get back into at some point.

NeedToAskPlease · 16/09/2024 13:39

Yes. I do a mixture of exercise.

I run, swim, strength train with weights and attend a Les Mills Combat class.

PenelopePitStrop · 16/09/2024 13:40

Yes

Have done for years and years, alongside cardio.

More people becoming aware of the importance is hardly an obsession

101dalmatians · 16/09/2024 13:41

Yes! Love it, and maintained it through two pregnancies, albeit at much lower weights towards the end. I don’t think it’s an obsession at the moment though, or at least not a new one. Running is the sport all over my social media at the moment

MouseofCommons · 16/09/2024 13:42

Yes, I've always done it.
I also run and try and do pilates regularly. No point in in only lifting weights while your cardio goes to pieces. Or vice versa.

Codlingmoths · 16/09/2024 13:43

Every woman should lift weights. For exercise i enjoy running but I also do body pump, good muscle strength is a key component of increasing fitness, general health and staving off ageing. The Les mills body pump classes haven’t changed much in 20 years really, it’s not some new fad.

LakeFlyPie · 16/09/2024 13:44

I do Body Pump 2-3 x week, which isn't heavy weights but weights nonetheless and I enjoy it and a couple of HITT classes which include body weight and resistance work. I used to do Yoga too and would like to get back into it as I think it helped to ward off the aches and pains in my ageing body!

hereismydog · 16/09/2024 13:47

Yes, I find it great for my physical AND mental health. I do it probably 4x a week.

I hate cardio so try to do a little cardio every day rather than 2-3 ‘big’ cardio sessions per week. Even if it’s just a brisk walk with the dog, or a fast swim, it counts!

I should add that most of this has fallen by the wayside during pregnancy as I’m in so much pain with PGP that climbing the stairs to my bedroom counts as both resistance and cardio at the moment Blush

Fruitypatootie · 16/09/2024 13:51

I used to be all about the cardio - running and cycling - but now I’m in my 40s I’m really trying to get stronger. Perimenopause has hit me full force and for the first time ever I have gained weight. Muscle mass is on the decline and I really don’t want to suffer when I’m older. I still run and cycle however, because cardiovascular fitness just as important for health. I love seeing women being empowered to be strong rather than as skinny as possible

Kulawand · 16/09/2024 13:55

I've always been active (walking/running) but then life took a turn and now I'm housebound pretty much to care for my disabled DC. Took up yoga about 4 years ago watching YouTube vids and have now added a YouTube weights/cardio routine in.

In my 40s and never been overweight or particularly unfit so hoping adding weights now is not too late to have benefits.

I don't think pounding the streets running is any good for aging joints whatsoever.

cushionfiend · 16/09/2024 13:55

Yes - I currently do 2 sessions of CrossFit, 2 sessions of yoga and 2-3 short runs per week. I'm 54 and I specifically took up the CrossFit last year because I wanted to do some weight-bearing exercise to keep my bones in decent health. I've been surprised by how much I enjoy it! There's so much pressure on women to be thin - now what I actually enjoy is feeling strong, not trying to be thin.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 16/09/2024 14:02

Don't do actual weight lifting, but do weight bearing exercises. I do a combination of HIIT, walking, cycling and yoga.

HighHeelsOnCobblestones · 16/09/2024 14:07

Yes, I used to do predominantly cardio. Used to run in my 20’s, cycling and HIIT workouts in my 30’s. Now I’m in my 40’s I do more low impact stuff. Still love cycling but find it hard to fit in a bike ride. HIIT workouts and lots of time on my feet gave me plantar fasciitis. So I stopped the HIIT and started weights; love it and feeling a lot stronger.

Is running the sport all over your social media because that's also what you tend to look for online?

Google seems to know that I have a cat, it was ill recently, and it knows I like running because I get lot of FB ads and videos on them!

BigDahliaFan · 16/09/2024 14:15

Yes....I've been doing it for a year now - 2 to 3 times a week in a class where my form is checked.

I've lost weight and feel much stronger - I'm in my 50s....

mondaytosunday · 16/09/2024 14:18

Yes. Mainly kettlebells.

WonderingAboutBabies · 16/09/2024 14:46

Yes, lifted weights since 18-19 years old just to keep strength up. Now I'm nearly 30 and there is a noticeable difference between people my age who lift weights/exercise regularly, and those who don't.

It's so good for my mental health, physical health, and does wonders for long term health too. I want to be able to run around with my kids for as long as possible, and even grandkids too.

Anjelika · 16/09/2024 14:53

Yes. Do weights at home 3-4 times a week following a Caroline Girvan programme. 5 days into her new one and loving it. Try to run too as cardio fitness is important but the weights come first these days.

AuntieMarys · 16/09/2024 14:54

Yes. I'm 66

whateveryouwantmetosay · 16/09/2024 14:57
