Kids asked to stand for headteacher

So dd has just started high school. There is an expectation that the students stand up when the headteacher enters the assembly hall. Is this not a bit draconian in 2024?

No, it's a mark of respect.

ThisBlueCrab · 16/09/2024 13:02

Why, it is a sign of respect. We had to do it on our high school 35 years ago!

If they are in air/sea/army cadets, guiding, scouting etc they are expected to salute if a senior leader walks in.

It's a non issue.

Mishmashs · 16/09/2024 13:02

We used to have to do it whenever a teacher entered the room. Lots of up and down! I didn’t mind as a teenager, it was just something the school did.

YABU

It is good manners for adults. It is fairly basic for pupils in school.

Gracelet · 16/09/2024 13:05

We had to stand up every time a teacher came into the classroom - it's respectful.

Lyricallie · 16/09/2024 13:06

We had to stand for all teachers that came in to start the class. Respectful and also gets everyone to stop talking and realise the class is about to start.

This was mid 2000s so not a huge time ago.

Mainoo72 · 16/09/2024 13:06

It’s called showing respect. What’s the problem?

SongSungBlues · 16/09/2024 13:06

Perfectly normal, and not a problem. Certainly not draconian.

Beezknees · 16/09/2024 13:07

YABU, I had to do this at school (in the 00s so not a million years ago). A lot of kids are so disrespectful these days, no harm in a few rules.

sunbum · 16/09/2024 13:07

seems fine and appropriate to me

Howdull · 16/09/2024 13:07

Another one here to say it's normal and a mark of respect

TheStroppyFeminist · 16/09/2024 13:08

Totally normal.

BeyondMyWits · 16/09/2024 13:08

Our local school requires students to line up outside the classroom in alphabetical order, walk in, greeting the teacher, stand behind their chairs and wait to be told to be seated.

Sent mine elsewhere as the kids looked miserable.

Chasingshadowss · 16/09/2024 13:08

Absolutely not! It's a sign of respect.
The teacher is their educator, not their friend!

quoque · 16/09/2024 13:09

Respectful and normal. The head teacher is not a random person, she (or he) runs the school and it's important for discipline that the students learn quickly that they deserve respect.

Tetchypants · 16/09/2024 13:11

And we wonder why the yoof of day are such entitled pains in the arse. Homeschool if you don’t want your kids to learn respect for others.

LostittoBostik · 16/09/2024 13:11

They do it partly because it resets the group and shuts everyone up.

It's not draconian. It's crowd management.

Idontevenknowmyname · 16/09/2024 13:12

Of all the school rules mine have to follow, this is not one I have an issue with.
They also line up at the start of the day to enter the building. This is mainly for safety and stops the little beasts running wild before the teacher is ready for them. Don’t mind in the slightest. The kids aren’t bothered either.
Secondary school, if it matters.

OnlyYellowRoses · 16/09/2024 13:13

Same reason you stand when the bridge enters at a wedding or the coffin comes in at the funeral, it's a mark of respect.

LadyKenya · 16/09/2024 13:13

Yabu, if you see this as a problem.

probably because for the first time in their lives the little darlings were expected to show some respect and have some manners. Discipline is essential for society to function and for discipline to work children need to learn that they are not the centre of the universe.

TickingAlongNicely · 16/09/2024 13:14

As long as they are not expecting children with disabilities or injuries to do it, this is completely a non issue.

AllTheChaos · 16/09/2024 13:14

Absolutely standard and normal. Standing whenever a teacher enters a classroom too.

edwinbear · 16/09/2024 13:14

This is very standard - as parents we stand for the headteacher when he enters the hall for prizegiving, as we should.

25soexcited · 16/09/2024 13:14

Absolutely nothing wrong with teaching kids a bit of respect and good manners.
