Kids asked to stand for headteacher

So dd has just started high school. There is an expectation that the students stand up when the headteacher enters the assembly hall. Is this not a bit draconian in 2024?

I've worked in schools.

I've definitely seen a lot of people who work in schools, who really enjoy having power over teenagers and children.

I think some people go into those roles for the power.

Children and teens are seen as second class citizens

Indeed, absolutely.

And more of those twats seem to have been attracted to the profession now that it is the way so many secondary schools are set up.

What nonsense.

Oh hell no.

Should we all stand when our boss walks into the room? Pfffft.

If you see some of the behaviour in schools the pupils have enough freedom!

Having to go to school at all , is a lack of freedom.

From 5 -18, no one has any choice except to do one thing. Go to school.

There should be more options for children and teens

No it's about time some respect was restored in society.

LlynTegid · 16/09/2024 13:53

I think it is perfectly reasonable. I appreciate some academies seem to have rules I don't think add any value, this is one I think does.

Nannyfannybanny · 16/09/2024 13:54

Don't join any martial arts groups, you have to bow.

What nonsense.

Nonsense?

There are thousands of children who say that they have been abused in schools.

Verbal, physical and sexual abuse

crumblingschools · 16/09/2024 13:54

@Abbylikeswine if you don't like the idea of school why did you work in one?

Or maybe they've seen the impact of Sonny and Lexi-Mae swearing and running down the corridors banging on the doors and think 🤔 maybe there needs to be clear boundaries.....

Then why don't the teachers stand up for the children.

Why is the respect only one way?

Edited

Standing quietly to begin a lesson, queuing in an orderly manner and greeting people appropriately is not abuse.

crumblingschools · 16/09/2024 13:56

@Abbylikeswine there is a lot of abuse at home too, sometimes school is actually the safe space for them

Now that I know of, for sure.

You always seem to appear on threads and argue the opposing view.

We do. We stand at the door to greet them. We always say Good Morning or Good Afternoon. We have rules of courtesy and consideration.

WiseLemonFox · 16/09/2024 13:57

I agree op. The best schools treat pupils as equals not subservient.

crumblingschools · 16/09/2024 13:57

Teachers in our local school stand by the door and greet the children as they come in, they are not meant to sit at their desk whilst the children file in.

They basically do for the whole lesson.
This thread is nuts. If you don't like the school system, and I know there is plenty wrong with it, then home school.

Gosh yes.
How dreadful for them to have to receive a free education!

Lets become one of those countries where everyone pays for schooling and charities are set up to educate children desperate to pull themselves out of poverty.

LadyLovesToBoogie · 16/09/2024 13:59

He is the head of the school, why would you think it draconian for the children to stand up and show respect for their leader? There has to be discipline and boundaries or how will they learn if it’s a ‘free for all and do as you please’ environment? He has ultimate responsibility for everyone, teachers and children alike, and it’s his head on the chopping block when/if anything goes wrong in the school, he deserves respect.
Thank goodness some schools are still teaching pupils respect for others when many parents are failing miserably.

WiseLemonFox · 16/09/2024 13:57

They're not equals. They're children. They don't need extra responsibility of doing break times or managing the curriculum.

I make my kids stand for me every time I enter the room. AIBU?
