Saturday afternoons

What do you do on a Saturday afternoon if you're in your 50s, older kids (so no running kids about).

I've spent today reading the papers and doing a tiny bit of housework and half watching some TV but it just seems so boring!

Make an apple crumble and 2 lemon drizzle cakes. Read a couple of chapters of my new book. Had a nap. Me and DH went to another couples for afternoon tea. They made the sandwich and we brought the cake. Popped to the supermarket for a few bits and did 3 loads of washing

Welldarn · 14/09/2024 21:05

Went to work 😁

rockingbird · 14/09/2024 21:07

I had a snooze at the beach hut ☺️ actually I walked the dog around 9.30, we had breakfast at the hut waiting for the dog to dry off and a friend passed by and we had a cuppa and a catch up. She left and I laid down inside the hut on the bench reading with the dog on my lap.. next thing I knew it was 3pm!!

Lazy few hours this morning *.
Gardening for a few hours.
Went to see my mum & dad and sat in the garden and chatted to mum for a couple of hours.

*first time since he was about 14 that I haven't had to take ds2 to a hockey match - as he's now got a car and drove himself!
And took himself and the other (younger) lad in our lift share to judo & back last night.
And has taken his brother to their dad's today.

Gorgeous sunny day, we were at our allotment!

Weeding, collecting seed heads for next year and picking our tea.

halava · 14/09/2024 21:12

Unpacked after a few days away, got it all washed and dried. Packed away Summer clothes (kept a couple of T shirts out just in case we get an Indian Summer ha). Got the Autumn/Winter clothes hung up, found the rainjacket and Winter jacket. Polished my leather ankle boots. I'm nearly ready for the change of seasons!

Was whacked after all that so flopped on the couch and fell asleep for an hour (long day travelling y/day). Just me here so I could do anything, everything or nothing today.

Andtheworldwentwhite · 14/09/2024 21:14

Dh and I went into town this morning. Took my son ( who is 20) to have his eyes tested. This afternoon I actually went to next and got some new jeans.

this evening we have had dinner in front of the tv and watched the last grand tour. Tomorrow will be me sitting in my craft room all day.

Shallwesay2pm · 14/09/2024 21:17

We had a lie in, walked the dog, did weekly grocery shop (where there were loads of plants reduced ), then had a quick lunch before heading
down to our local rugby club with our (rugby mad) ds16 to watch the seniors team and have a cold beer. Glorious weather here today aswell

YarsidokaLoafer · 14/09/2024 21:19

Woodland dog walk, visited my mother (depressing), went for coffee & cake at a nice cafe after to cheer myself up. Then went shopping for jeans & shoes. Came home, read the newspaper,

YarsidokaLoafer · 14/09/2024 21:20

....posted too soon!

then a bit of gardening, picked some veg and made dinner.

tsmainsqueeze · 14/09/2024 21:20

Had a bit of a lie in and read , a good clean in the kitchen and cooked some apples for a crumble, had a lovely nap on the sofa after a week of shite sleep with a dog curled up by me then took dogs for a walk , takeaway for tea and cider, back on sofa now and contemplating bed.
A much needed slow day after a busy week.

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 14/09/2024 21:22

I’m child free - does that count? I had lunch at my favourite coffee shop, shopped for the ingredients for a recipe I want to try tomorrow, started work on turning my balcony into a catio, played with the cat & did my Italian homework.

tarheelbaby · 14/09/2024 21:22

I was at work, 8am - 5pm, as were my colleagues, taking home and away fixtures, answering calls for matron and supporting pupils.
DD1 worked 12 - 3ish - sent home early b/c the pub was dead due to beautiful (totally perfect) weather.
DD2 went to her riding group, 1 - 3pm.

AngelinaFibres · 14/09/2024 21:39

Me 59, husband 62. We walked 6 miles with our walking group then had lunch with them in a local pub. Came home. I did some gardening and husband chopped firewood. It was a beautiful day here, garden still looking really good.

OnlyTheBravest · 14/09/2024 21:40

I know what you mean it is strange not having to run around after the children but I have settled into a nice routine on the weekends. I have found quite a few arts/crafts/music that can be done at home, so I pick what I fancy. It was a bit pricey starting up but I can grab what I like when I feel like it. I do like to get out in the morning for some exercise.

So today, I had a lovely lie, did some housework, went for a walk, came home, added some more to the family/heritage recipe scrapbook and just finished munching a nice home made dinner. I still need to practise some piano (working on a new piece) and then maybe lego, a bath and a movie.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 14/09/2024 21:46

I'm 56 and DH and I babysit our grandsons every Saturday. We do have it set up though that we each get one Saturday off a month. Today is my Saturday off and all I've done is sit around the house watch tv or play on my phone. I do work in a school though so have only been back to work a few weeks and I'm tired, so enjoyed a day "doing nothing"

Greytulips · 14/09/2024 21:48

I’ve done 3 hours overtime for work as we are short staffed again.
Watched a movie and had a nap - taken DD on a shopping trip this week and the other back to Uni so I deserved a nap! Been to the hair dressers and clean round.
Rang a friend to arrange dinner next week.

Bit I know what you mean. DSis is away most weeks with different group seeing the English country side, or short breaks - she works 4 long days so have long weekends. I think this is the way forward.

Crikeyalmighty · 14/09/2024 21:54

Autumnweddingguest · 14/09/2024 22:01

Today I worked all afternoon (had a project deadline to reach today) then zoom called family. Went to outdoor bootcampin the sunshine this morning so didn't feel like I was stuck indoors.

Often I go for a walk somewhere beautiful with DH or clean the house and cook in advance of having people over.

Long bath and a book

Go into town to shop, get brows done, see a friend for coffee

SGBK4862 · 14/09/2024 22:04

Today, because it was sunny, we drove to a country pub for lunch, then did a 6 mile walk this afternoon. We are trying to do this more often, though DH usually plays his sport on Saturday afternoons. I usually go to a class on Saturday mornings and potter round the house in the pm - gardening while listening to a podcast, chores such as ironing while watching trashy tv, play games on my phone, read, do a jigsaw, sometimes meet a friend. I do sometimes feel this is a waste of a weekend day (except for when I meet a friend) but actually I find it relaxing after a week at work, so why not?

herportal · 14/09/2024 22:06

I spend most weekends with DH seeing cultural events in town - galleries or museums, sometimes theatre or cinema matinees, or visiting some new attraction or restaurant, or a trip out of town. Weekends have always been our leisure time and mostly spent out of the house.

landris · 14/09/2024 22:25

Trying to catch up with household chores (and failing miserably). I usually take one despairing look, and then head out of the door to go and wander around a garden centre instead.

mondaytosunday · 14/09/2024 22:26

I am a bit older (62) but still have a teen at home, plus this weekend a visiting son. Saturdays we often go out for brunch or coffee. Today not as my son went to a footie match at noon so I had breakfast with him before and then walked dogs, did some housework then chilled (browsing way to many Christmas sites) til I started cooking dinner at 4.30 (needs an hour and a half in the oven).
Weekends I think of as time off from the usual chores/responsibilities of the week.

obsessedwithfreshbread · 14/09/2024 23:22

Saturday afternoons are generally spent in the kitchen listening to Rylan, we chat away and play along with couch potatoes and dance like teenagers at some of the dance tracks he plays!! (Teens occasionally appear and roll their eyes, grab snacks and disappear again)

I just potter about prepping the evening meal, I like to make something I don't have time for during the week (we all share cooking Sun-Fri but nobody is allowed to get involved on a Saturday!)
