Do people use a meat thermometer to check sausages and burgers are properly cooked?

We always just cook for roughly the right time and split one open to check it “looks “ cooked. But I was watching rich kids, skint holiday the other day and they were on a caravan holiday and had a meat thermometer for all their cooking. I wondered if this was something others do?

No. I go by if it looks cooked and has been cooking for long enough it's probably cooked.

Takoneko · 14/09/2024 18:52

I use a meat thermometer.

I do use a meat thermometer for most meats when cooking. Also very handy for when cooking roasts, using beef as an example, it takes out any guess work for when it’s done exactly to our liking.

AgainstRegulations · 14/09/2024 18:55

I use a knife to check the centre. If the knife is hot enough that I can’t keep my fingers on it then it’s ready.

teatoast8 · 14/09/2024 18:56

Nope

CatherinedeBourgh · 14/09/2024 18:57

Yes, usually.

Mostly to reassure dh who is utterly paranoid about sausages.

But very handy for roasts etc.

frogsofbox · 14/09/2024 18:58

Yes, digital thermometer to check chicken, pork, beef etc. Ds took one to uni too. I was raised in a I am sure it is fine household so maybe I have too many memories of being at my Grandma's with her burnt on one side sausages and looking very pink on the other side.

Overcover · 14/09/2024 18:59

No, I've never owned one in 30 years of feeding a household.

If you can hear them sizzling and they've been in for the right amount of time, they're cooked.

StartingANewNameToday · 14/09/2024 19:01

Yes, I use one for everything. Joint of beef. Sausages. Chicken breast. Chicken nugget. In it goes.

I'm a reluctant cook and I don't trust my own judgement.

twentysevendresses · 14/09/2024 19:02

Nope!

Balloonhearts · 14/09/2024 19:03

No. I stick a fork in it for about 5 seconds then touch it to my lip. If it burns me, its done.

MigGril · 14/09/2024 19:06

Nope, you don't need to anyway with beef or pork as can be eaten slightly pink. Although I always cook the sausages till they are done in the middle, if I'm slightly in doubt I'll just cut one open to check.

Poachedeggavocado · 14/09/2024 19:08

I use one at xmas for the Turkey as that's the only time I cook such a huge piece of meat. Anything else, stick a fork in, or cut open a bit to make sure.

CosyFanTucci · 14/09/2024 19:11

I might use a thermometer for a big roast or a turkey. For burgers and bangers I use common sense.

MumChp · 14/09/2024 19:13

We don't own one. Handed it to my mother as we never used it.

ThisHangryPinkBalonz · 14/09/2024 19:14

I do.

Merrow · 14/09/2024 19:15

I do. I was vegetarian when I learned how to cook, then when I started eating meat later in life I was really paranoid about how to know it was done. Then it just seemed a very easy way to avoid food poisoning! I don't use it all the time, but if I'm on the fence I will. Definitely use it for roast chicken and sausages on the bbq

TheReturnOfFeathersMcGraw · 14/09/2024 19:17

I put my finger on the middle bit of meat and if it is too hot to keep my finger there, then it is done 🤷‍♀️

RedHelenB · 14/09/2024 19:17

I've never used a meat thermometer in my life and never got food poisoning.

RedToothBrush · 14/09/2024 19:18

Nope not for sausages and burgers.

You can chop them if necessary.

A roast, yes.

thehungryteacher · 14/09/2024 19:19

Yes we had a cheap one then we bought a Thermapen

Initially it was just for bbq which DH is obsessed with but we use it all the time

It about £80!

BashfulClam · 14/09/2024 19:19

Yep but don’t use it for sausages or burgets. I use for joints to make sure it’s medium and not shoe leather and at Christmas on the turkey so I don’t give everyone salmonella.

thehungryteacher · 14/09/2024 19:20

Look like there are some more affordable option jar look exactly like a thermapen
