Which flight would you take?

We live near Newcastle and are wanting to visit Dublin
Partner is at work till the Saturday 1pm
We have two options

Saturday night 6.15pm flight
Arrive in Dublin at 7pm ish
So get to hotel for around 8.15pm I think
It's £230 that night and then stay till Monday so around £360 both nights

Or stay at airport hotel Sunday night in Newcastle £100 and get the 8.50am flight and arrive in Dublin for 10am on the Sunday morning.

Fly home on the 1pm flight Monday

Is it worth staying Saturday in Dublin when we arrive late but then have all day Sunday
Or get Sunday morning flight (it could be delayed )

Or scrap all that and just go to Manchester for a night ?
And drive

Why would you stay in the airport hotel in Newcastle?! Just drive to the airport Sunday morning and get on the plane 🤷🏽‍♀️

July24MJ · 14/09/2024 11:58

Depends what you'd do Saturday night? 8.15 could be early enough still for going out for hours ....
But if you'd get to the Dublin hotel, have a hotel dinner then go to bed ... you're not missing much by only going the Sunday morning. Especially if you're paying £230 rather than £100 to sit in a hotel room all evening.

Personally I'd go somewhere else & wait until you''re not on such a tight timeframe to visit Dublin.

NailedUp · 14/09/2024 11:59

Why can't you just go in the morning and save 100 quid

I would take the evening flight as you have 2 nights in one place so can unpack and settle in and go out for a drink (Guinness with live music? ) and wake up the next day with a full day available.

Movingon2024 · 14/09/2024 12:05

I see it a bit differently...By the time you've got through the airport, travelled to the hotel, checked in etc it'll be early afternoon, so you will lose a lot of time. Then you'll have to leave mid- morning for the airport to make a 1pm flight on Monday.

So I'd take the Saturday night flight, suck up thr additional cost but have the full Sunday in Dublin.

Enjoy

We live two hours from Newcastle airport and don't fancy getting up at 5am and being tired all day when we only have 1 full day

What's the purpose of the visit, is it time bound, e,g a wedding. Christening etc, or you are just going for a mooch. If the latter I would go a different weekend when he can book time off and get a flight early Saturday morning

ringalings · 14/09/2024 12:10

We are just going for a mooch around
He has no more holidays to use this year so it's that weekend or wait till next year

It's kind of why I'm thinking Manchester or Leeds
Drive down Sunday morning and get there for 11 and then not leave till Monday 6pm and be home for 9 ish
I'm so undecided

I'd get up early in the day of the flight and stay over one night but instead of a 1pm flight home I'd try for later.

However Travelling after DH's work could be ok if he's up for it and not too tired. I think I'd want him to decide how he feels tbh! No point if he's going to be tired and crabbit. However if he won't be then you'd have an extra night of going out.

Defo wouldn't stay at the airport. I might for a fortnights holiday. But not a weekend break.

MissedItByThisMuch · 14/09/2024 12:12

Def go the Sat night - that way you wake up relaxed, have a nice hotel breakfast (love a hotel breakfast) and the full day in Dublin. Otherwise you wake up with deadlines hanging over you, if the flight’s delayed you have hardly any time, you’re checking in and out of two hotels for a night each…way more stress and hassle.

Aussieland · 14/09/2024 12:15

Saturday night 100%

Mercurial123 · 14/09/2024 12:17

Fly Saturday. Dublin is so much better than Manchester. The Mancunians may disagree.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 14/09/2024 12:20

Saturday night, otherwise it's a bit of a job trip.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 14/09/2024 12:21

Non!

Tequilamockinbird · 14/09/2024 12:23

I wouldn't do it for just 1 night. But I wouldn't do Manchester or Leeds either. Have you thought about York? Much nicer IMO

RobinHood19 · 14/09/2024 12:26

I would take the Saturday flight, and stay in a cheaper hotel.

BuzzieLittleBee · 14/09/2024 12:29

Can you get an afternoon/earlier flight to Belfast? You could fly there, hotel might be cheaper than Dublin, then train to Dublin early on Sunday.
Or just have 2 nights in Belfast.

I'd definitely want to go for 2 nights, but seems like the Dublin timings don't work that well, so I'd go somewhere else.

AnchorWHAT · 14/09/2024 13:08

I would do Manchester Leeds York or harrogate and go to Dublin next leave year for longer.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 14/09/2024 13:37

Are you basically asking if a Saturday night in Dublin is worth it? Because yes, yes it is 😂😂

Andoutcomethewolves · 14/09/2024 14:55

I'd do Dublin a different time when you can have a full weekend personally. Or at least look for a cheaper hotel! I'd definitely want two nights - the second option sounds wayyy too rushed but the first is an awful lot of money for the extra time you get.

I don't know Manchester well enough to comment but would second a PP's suggestion of Belfast if you haven't been - I went for the first time for a weekend recently and loved it!

Personally I don' think it's worth going there for such short time. But if you do I would go on Saturday as you can still have late dinner on Saturday and then have all Sunday. You won't have time to do anything on Monday before your flight.

sonjadog · 14/09/2024 15:14

Saturday evening 100%. You arrive in time for dinner, pub, see the nightlife, wake up to a full day on Sunday, have relaxed breakfast and head off Monday.

Otherwise you will sit in a dull airport hotel Saturday, be knackered when you arrive in Dublin on Sunday due to early start, by the time you get into the centre it will be late morning, and you will leave again under 24 hours later.

MCBfan · 14/09/2024 15:14

Fly Saturday night but find a cheaper hotel?

titchy · 14/09/2024 15:16

I'd also go on Saturday - no bags to carry around, already checked in, nice dinner out followed by a late bar with live music and a full Irish breakfast the next morning. That's got to be worth spending the extra £160 for!
