I get paid a lot of money for doing very little

I'm not proud at all, I'm a bit bored, but also recognise I have it pretty good.

I lead a small operations team, 3 people including me. I took the job mostly because it paid the same as my old job, but for only 3 days pw, whereas before I was FT.

Partly, I have little to do becuase my no2 is very good and very keen to take on new work. I'm enjoying developing her and there's no doubt she's doing some work that should be mine. She seems happy with this/glad of the training though. Regardless, I think our team of 2.6 people is probably 1 too many, the others aren't over worked either.

However, no one outside the team seems to have noticed, no one seems to care about cost, everyone is very happy with the service we deliver and none of us is likely to easily find similar work for similar money

So, I keep quiet....? It doesn't seem quite ethical, but neither does volunteering one of our jobs!

Keep schtum

We're all doing it

Well, yes. But keep an eye out for your own opportunities to grow/stretch/shine because your number 2 might try to usurp you at some point!

I am very efficient with my time and management workload so well it feels like I'm only working half the time. But my level of experience and knowledge allow me to work at that pace so they are paying me for that expertise as well as the hours slogging away on a project.

NonStopMoaning · 12/09/2024 21:22

You give me hope that I can find a nice job that isn't bonkers overworked, unlike my school job where they can't recruit and the rest of us either watch things fall over (through not picking up extra tasks) or just do more and more.

Off to find a small team where I can use my skills and not feel like I'm drowning for 8hrs a day!

That's where I am too. I'm not worried about being usurped, more than happy to let her take the credit when things go well, whilst retaining responsibility when they don't.

They're paying for my experience and for my taking responsibility really, but I don't actually "do" much.

I was a school. Business Manager before, so I'm used to a hectic workload.

DodoTired · 12/09/2024 21:52

Of course keep quiet and count your blessings!

I really cringed at that ! I’m sorry OP but this made me uncomfortable!!!

Hardknocks · 12/09/2024 21:53

Similar position but I come from a super busy in person role to a remote role where my ‘job’ didn’t exist prior to me starting, so nobody really expects anything of me. Meaning I don’t really have to do much to impress people. I’m paid a great wage and only work 4 days a week. Honestly I feel like it’s too good to be true some days.

I asked DH if I should ask for more work or just keep quiet and enjoy it and he says keep quiet. I passed my probation with flying colours and I honestly sometimes think, how 😂

TheYearOfSmallThings · 12/09/2024 21:54

Keep your mouth shut - nobody will thank you for rocking this boat.

Sometimes they need you in case of a crisis or during busy periods, the company might know you do less the rest of the time but are pleased they have a skilled and reliable person actually.

Why? I've been on the other side of it lots of times in my career. I'm very grateful to rhe people who gave me "development opportunities".

I've been in your situation when I feel I've been paid a lot for not much. That wasn't my fault, it was the fault of the leadership. Over the course of a job, I feel it made up for the times that I was incredibly overworked and stressed.

Use the time to look at ways the team could develop and add value. It nice to have some time to actually innovate and find better ways of doing things. A point will come when this will allow you to shine.

Thought id add a comment.

Houseplanter · 12/09/2024 22:21

I think so long as you promote and encourage your team to do well and develop its fine to cruise yourself.

Leading from behind is sometimes the best way

Dabralor · 12/09/2024 22:22

Er, what job is this? Asking for a friend.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/09/2024 22:23

If I were you I’d be developing a side hustle or doing some serious training / education.

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 12/09/2024 22:23

I've had that before. But my current role is getting crazy busy. What do you do? I might need to make a move 😄

SingingRobin · 12/09/2024 22:24

So please do tell us what these jobs are...

Echobelly · 12/09/2024 22:24

You can keep schtum but you'll probably get a bored and therefore kind of stressed by it after a while unless you can find other work to do,

I was underemployed in my last job but didn't want to leave too soon and I was in a very small team so I couldn't just pick up work for other teams without official sign off and them being charged for my time etc. As it happened I was made redundant round about when I'd be thinking of trying to move internally, so I wasn't too sad about that.

shellyleppard · 12/09/2024 22:25

How do you have 2.6 people????

shellyleppard · 12/09/2024 22:25

How do you have 2.6 people????

Clearly one of the people works part-time so 0.6 FTE, ie they work 0.6 of a normal working week = 3 days a week
