I get paid a lot of money for doing very little

I'm not proud at all, I'm a bit bored, but also recognise I have it pretty good.

I lead a small operations team, 3 people including me. I took the job mostly because it paid the same as my old job, but for only 3 days pw, whereas before I was FT.

Partly, I have little to do becuase my no2 is very good and very keen to take on new work. I'm enjoying developing her and there's no doubt she's doing some work that should be mine. She seems happy with this/glad of the training though. Regardless, I think our team of 2.6 people is probably 1 too many, the others aren't over worked either.

However, no one outside the team seems to have noticed, no one seems to care about cost, everyone is very happy with the service we deliver and none of us is likely to easily find similar work for similar money

So, I keep quiet....? It doesn't seem quite ethical, but neither does volunteering one of our jobs!

Your advice is to lie and say they need another person, even though OP is underemployed?

With that attitude I hope at least that you're not public sector.

They are not handing gold medals for killing yourself at work.
Mental health and nice family life (all so much easier with low workload) are much more important.

Not public, I work for a charity ;)

In your previous post you said "From someone in a nice paid job doing max 5-10h a week unless it is an emergency." Are your contracted hours 5-10 hours per week?

Or have you just admitted ripping off a charity by taking a salary for a set number of hours that you do not work?

I'm not sure whether you were trying to be clever or funny or helpful but you're coming across as a despicable person. A vulture preying on the goodwill and trust of others whilst taking a salary in the most part that you haven't worked to earn, made from monies donated to charity?

Beautifulweeds · 13/09/2024 18:09

Enjoy it, sounds like a dream job and you've been lucky. Things can change with company restructuring, new managers etc so make the most of it lol 😆 I get the guilt but if I experienced this now I would think, hey, you've grafted and been stressed, time to have something easier but well paid! Xx

Tbh I'm of an age where redundancy/early retirement might be good news. I'd be happy to know I was handing over to someone well trained. I've always taken the view that I'm training my replacement in any job.

Exactly, though of course don't overload her with work, sure you wouldn't. Would she tell you if finding it difficult? Samples to develop, advice etc. Xx

bifurCAT · 13/09/2024 18:13

How much is a lot?

StoneTheCrone · 13/09/2024 18:14

How much do you earn? (Nosey).

LizTruss · 13/09/2024 18:22

I had a job like that.

Enjoy it while you can, it may not last.

Mine didn't.🥬

I am paid for FT position and I deliver waaay above average results for FT position.
It is no ones concern how many hours it takes me to get there.

If you imagine every charity listed as a group of poor volunteers and low paid staff with a golden heart, you are seriously delusional.
Many, mine included, got buckets of people well over 100k blabing to seven figures people to get their money.
I sleep very well ;)

What the hell do you 'deliver' in 5-10 hours per week? 😂

I've worked with charities plenty of times. I'm aware many function like large corporate entities. That does not mean ripping off a charity by doing fuck all for 75% of the time is okay.

merrymaryquitecontrary · 13/09/2024 18:27

I knew of someone once who too was enjoying "developing" her protégé, but unbeknownst to her the protégé was building up evidence over time that got her sacked and guess who ended up being the 0.6!

StoneTheCrone · 13/09/2024 18:29

Sounds like a very good job.

i do think though, that at your level, there's an awful lot of head work that goes on in terms of monitoring, assessing, evaluating etc. so it may appear that nothing's being done but it is.

I'd keep quiet. You could start your own side business in your quieter moments.

This thread is pretty gross. I know someone who works with kids who wouldn't be able to read this thread as the injustice of it would be too much.

Is she also unable to watch films or sports because of the injustice of actors' / sportspeoples' wages? Does she refuse to use google / facebook / twitter etc because of the amount of money that tech giants get? Hmm

LeopardPrint12 · 13/09/2024 18:47

Does she have to read about people boasting about that though in other circumstances? No. She doesn't.
This thread is in very poor taste.

beryldaperil · 13/09/2024 18:54

I think that this is also combined with privilege; I doubt most people on this thread would be okay with a female of colour declaring this "conundrum". Sharon White was criticised heavily for her work, with many critics saying that she was overpaid and brought very little to the institution. Research on pay in the US shows that many if not most women of colour are underpaid for their work in employment (as opposed to being self employed) despite specifically black women being of university level education. The data here in the UK isn't far off the same conclusion.

Yup not terribly well paid but not exactly overworked. Much twiddling of thumbs. I think partially it’s a budget thing. There’s this feeling that if you agree a budget cut then you’ll never get an increase agreed so everyone guards their budgets and claims the staff are at capacity. Hey ho I’ve decided to do a part time masters in my downtime.

This is interesting. I posted upthread about how much I earn for doing relatively little. I didn’t think to say (as it didn’t seem relevant at the time), but I’m Black. I have the benefit of privilege in every conceivable way apart from race, so that’s undoubtedly helped. But, I don’t doubt what you’re saying at all.

Do you have links to any of this data? If not, I’m
happy to look for it myself. Just thought I’d ask.

Obviously enough that I have been promoted and had significant pay rises year on year.

I am paid to make difficult decisions and I automated around of 90% of my other work 🤷🏼‍♀️
It is not my problem other people are slow thinkers and don't know how to use tech.

Leafstamp · 13/09/2024 19:53

You sound like you’re doing a good job OP, developing your number two by letting her do some of your work is absolutely what good managers should be doing.

I suspect the people on here who don’t agree or don’t understand this have different types of jobs (that may be jobs, rather than careers) and different work cultures.

But where I come from (industry wise), what you’re doing is the done thing. Push work down.

What I would say is are you seeking to take work off your own boss? Who is developing you?

Spongebobcircletop · 13/09/2024 20:01

I'm now in a job like this, I started very recently. Prior to this I worked my ass off, neglecting my physical and mental health in the process. Now I am managing the team, working on projects and resolving difficult queries where they arise. My health is so much better already. My question to OP and anyone else in this situation is what do you do when you are in office? I am in 3 days per week and feel like I need to look busy but sometimes have absolutely nothing to do.

MixedCouple2 · 13/09/2024 20:15

I was in a similar situation. Only lasted 3 years until the top honcho clocked it. My team manager had 3 members, I was one of them. We used to work blooming hard but would get tasks done really quickly we were cery efficient. Manager delegated a lot of her work to us but it was very manageable. And each week one of us would get to finish at lunch time on a Friday. It was pretty sweet. Best 3 years of my working life.

Do you have no fiduciary duties to the charity? Do they have a Code of Ethics? a set of values?

You have an amusingly high opinion of yourself - for someone screwing over a charity.
