Do you think that the NHS is working fine as it is? Or that just throwing more money at it is going to fix it?

Nw22 · 12/09/2024 15:42

Not sure what the problem is. We can’t just keep giving the nhs more money. They need to reform and people need to take more personal responsibility

DontBiteTheCat · 12/09/2024 15:43

No more money but better performance is what he actually said.

Throwing more money into it is absolutely pointless, it DOES need reform.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/09/2024 15:44

Yes, reform is good

A lot better than the Tories just giving money to their mates and encouraging us all into private health care

MissyB1 · 12/09/2024 15:46

No everyone was furious at the Tories for what they did to the NHS.

Chersfrozenface · 12/09/2024 15:52

According to the BBC the three priorities will be
"the transition to a digital NHS, moving more care from hospitals to communities, and focusing efforts on prevention over sickness".

Digital NHS - great if that means all the HCP's you see have all your records - though building the systems and digitising paper records will take time and money; possibly less great if it means endless electronic forms and majority virtual consultations.
Moving care from hospitals to communities: that worked so well for mental health services, didn't it?
Focusing efforts on prevention over sickness: again great, if it works and doesn't mean you don't get treated because your illness is judged to be your own fault

HRTQueen · 12/09/2024 16:05

Of course the NHS needs reforming Labour need to make some essential and brave decisions about the NHS

Interesting that this is not just about investment or rather lack of investment

we are moving towards the NHS not being the service we have had or have now, we are being nicely prepared for this we shall no doubt be moving towards an insurance based healthcare system. Labour told us that the NHS needs reforming over and over again in the run up to the election

It works in Europe so it can work here

nearlylovemyusername · 12/09/2024 16:09

Digital NHS means your X-rays/CTs/MRIs etc are screened by AI, not humans, so results are much faster and cheaper (and hopefully more accurate assuming AI maturity). Your diagnostic and prescriptions are largely AI managed as well. Great if you're a standard case, tough luck if not.

Focus on prevention - long time overdue, UK are decades behind other developed countries with this. However, if it means something like current "40+ health MOT" then better not to waste time

Ilovetowander · 12/09/2024 16:11

Interesting that the talking about reform and no money when a pay award has been made - to me that is inconsistent. I am not convinced there is much joined up thinking

MrsKwazi · 12/09/2024 16:14

The NHS is a bottomless pit and the waste is HUGE (ex nurse)

Commissioning. A whole layer of expensive management.

Starmer is spot on (from someone working closely with the NHS).

Elphamouche · 12/09/2024 16:33

The waste in the NHS is horrific! (Ex NHS staff)

That's something the Tories said, to disguise the fact that they spent less per capita than almost any other European country. Please god don't let the Labour Party spout the same bullshit.

Edited

Also spent many years at a fairly senior level, and have a different opinion. Your department was not the nhs in its entirety.

Cynic17 · 12/09/2024 16:40

No, everyone wasn't worried about the Tories and the NHS - to be honest, they generally had some good ideas, but got cold feet.
I know lots of people who have worked in the NHS over the last 30+ years and the vast majority would say that the last thing the NHS needs is more money. It would be like pouring water into a bucket with a hole in the bottom - pointless.
The NHS financial structure needs to be completely reworked - probably into some kind of insurance system similar to France, Holland or Germany. Citizens also need to take responsibility and not misuse it because they think it is "free". Unfortunately, I'm not convinced that Sir Keir has the backbone to do what is needed, but let's see....

Alltheprettyseahorses · 12/09/2024 16:41

Wes Streeting said in parliament today that the problem was underfunding so they'll probably have a fun chat later.

This is where we will lose the NHS; we'll see privatisation and sell-offs, treatments removed and payment for frontline services like GPs and A&E. All of this, just like removing the WFA, will cost lives. I don't have the patience any more for Labour HQ posts. Labour was a massive mistake. Anyway, I didn't vote for them.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 12/09/2024 16:43

I joined the NHS in 1987. Ever since then, the next government to come along had pretended to have the answers, whilst quietly stripping the NHS of more yet more funds and assets. I think Starmer came in with a game plan, despite what they say, and I'm even a labour supporter (to date). We'll see.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 12/09/2024 16:44

If the LP bring in privatisation, they can expect an enormous fight. It would be evil if they were worse than the Tories in practice.

80smonster · 12/09/2024 17:02

Puzzlemad · 12/09/2024 15:39

Starmer is shaping up as my least favourite PM to date, it’s been one bellend after another for the last 3 decades…

Boomer55 · 12/09/2024 17:11

It needs reform. It has had endless millions slung at it, and got worse. Hopefully, Labour can start to reform it. 😗

Cheesecakecookie · 12/09/2024 17:16

Part of the problem absolutely is funding. We spend less per person than Germany and France.

We have less doctors and less beds per head too.

The problem will be getting the funds to where it is needed and where all of the needed staff will come from.

Dymaxion · 12/09/2024 17:17

How will this reform actually improve patient's experiences of the NHS ?

Did he mention social care at all ?

BobbyBiscuits · 12/09/2024 17:20

From what I've heard the reform is what's needed. Not more money, but how it's spent. And putting sanctions etc on hospitals or services that are failing. Some of these services ate being run appallingly and haemorrhaging money.
I'm definitely less worried about what labour might do than what the Tories had in mind (or pockets?)
