I miss 1970s, thick syrupy Lucozade

Ive had D+V all night, cant even keep water down, bile coming up

No idea why, quite out of character for me

However OH has now got me some anti sickness tablets and some dioralyte and Im managing to keep it down. I feel utterly weak and achy.

I really really am craving that old style thick Lucozade, but it doesnt exist any more does it?

I got him to get me some coke although Im not keen on that.

That's the US version of 7up. The UK version has artificial sweeteners.

Some Wincarnis when you feel a bit better?

Daleksatemyshed · 11/09/2024 17:30

Why? Why must they change everything. Lucozade was great, it was the luxury you were given only when you were really poorly. A curse on energy drinks, I want the hard stuff 😂

Downthemedow · 11/09/2024 15:41

This won’t help you right now OP, but a company called Todds in Belfast have the old recipe and are making a drink called Enerzade. I have 3 bottles winging their way to me right now, and I really hope the taste is the same!

Oh my god, Im looking into this

So far Ive managed to get a pint and a half down me of water, some of that has the electrolyte sachest in them and half a pint of coke.

Im still very dehydrated and so weak, Im now downstairs. I havent been this ill for years and years.

For those questioning the sugar levels, that is the point, you need your salts and sugars replaced if you've had hours and hours of D+V, I was bringing up so much bile, it was horrendous.

I also cant drink very quickly so now Im just sipping the water and hoping it gets through me enough.

While Ive been sitting up there I went through Sainsburys website, so so many fizzy drink options are ALL with sweetners, awful things. They only do a few drinks with just sugar.

I dont even eat that much sugar, I prefer to water down drinks like that and have them half and half. But I do not want to be forced to have sweetners in every single soft drink.

I'm just getting over the worst stomach bug I've ever had and I would have loved some proper old Lucozade.

Like you I was craving sugar and I can't have artificial sweeteners so I've been surviving off Coke and Tangfastics.

I normally can't cope with much sugar at all either so this has been really unlike me but this bug has been horrible and it's the only things that have easily stayed down.

Oh snap, this is me

Trying to explain this in pubs or cafes. I dont want artificial sweetners but I dont want a full sugary coke..... nor fruit juice.

If Im really lucky I might get a tonic water with no sweetners and a fruit juice and mix them together.

I should just shut up and order tea. Sick of tea.

This thread has really cheered me up!!!

Original 7 up doesn’t have artificial sweeteners.

It does contain potassium citrate (which google tells me us used to make urine less acidic) (Wikipedia says it’s used as a food additive to regulate acidity) and Sodium calcium edetate (which Wikipedia says is primarily used to treat lead poisoning.)

Yes I looked this up earlier and couldnt find a way to find it in any UK supermarket.

Oh, no! It’s changed since I last checked. It used to be my best option in cafes with limited menus when I wanted a cold drink without caffeine, artificial sweeteners or artificial preservatives.

Back to milk and water for me.

Thank you for pointing this out.

Daleksatemyshed · 11/09/2024 18:17

Yes please @Downthemedow if it tastes like the original stuff do come back and let us know

Ive just ordered it. Why is it so difficult to find this sort of stuff

And yes to whoever mentioned original Ribena, another one that has changed beyond all recognitiion, horrible flavours

Wasn’t it just! That Lucozade in the orange cellophane made everything better!

70s children,we knew if lucozade appeared..we must have been ill.

MrTumblesSpottyBum · 11/09/2024 18:18

I also really miss Proper Lucozade. My dad used to sell it in his pharmacy. You could feel the sugar on your teeth. Mmmm.

But SO EXCITED to hear about Enerzade!! Going to buy a trial pack, thank you.

Hope you feel better soon OP…

soupfiend · 11/09/2024 18:20

When we're abroad we order Liptons Iced tea, either lemon or peach, no artificial sweetners. Or the original San Pellegrino orange or lemon again no artificial sweetners. Both these options are not as high in sugar as coke.

It should be offered here as a matter of course.

StoatofDisarray · 11/09/2024 18:20

I'm in the same position, I've got gastroenteritis for the first time ever. I asked my partner to get me a bottle of Lucozade and he came back with something called orange Lucozade and it just wasn't right, it tasted like thick Fanta.

I remember Lucozade tasting a bit like barley sugar sweets.

muddyford · 11/09/2024 18:23

It was lovely, barley sugar sweet, and a true tonic.

StoatofDisarray · 11/09/2024 18:25

Beth216 · 11/09/2024 15:29

DH is the same, i don't get it at all. Who ever thought Lucozade was healthy and something good for ill people? It's like diabetes and obesity all in one bottle.

Mars Bars used to be marketed as being good for you. The advert went something like, "There's milk, glucose and thick, thick chocolate... a Mars a day helps you work rest and play."

soupfiend · 11/09/2024 18:29

Thats because we were hugely more active.

We are animals and we need a certain amount of calories and fat/sugars despite the modern view.

So a Mars, perhaps not every day wasnt going to have the impact that we think it might these days.

OP posts:
PhoebeFeels · 11/09/2024 18:29

Not quite the same I think.
Doctors in USA recommended smoking cigarettes in 1950s.

SeptemberIRememberALoveOnceNewHasNowGrownOld · 11/09/2024 18:34

On the UK option on their website San Pellegrino they claim to sell fruit flavoured drinks without preservatives and sweeteners other than sugar, but the only ones I have found in supermarkets contain stevia or something derived from it. “Derived from natural origin.”

Appletise still seems OK.

When I’m at home I usually choose cordials with only sugar as the sweetener, eg Bottlegreen, Belvoir, Rocks and occasional ones from M&S.

Pito · 11/09/2024 18:35

I drink the still lucozade sport now when I’m sick as the fizzy one just doesn’t hit the same anymore, tempted to try the enezade though!

Downthemedow · 11/09/2024 18:46

I shall report back! I’m a grown up, and if I want a full sugar drink occasionally, I should be able to have one!

Depending on where you are, OP, you might find some other drinks without sweeteners. Orangina is a good bet in France, as is Lemon Fanta (possibly only cans not bottles). I’ve had proper Sprite in Belgium and Germany. And closer to home, Tesco have started selling Irn Bru 1901 which uses their original recipe.

If only we could get original Ribena and Vimto! Apparently Muslim countries sell the good Vimto because they like to drink it to break their fasts, so it might be possible to order it online….

wastingtimeonhere · 11/09/2024 18:49

The 2970s bottles were also expensive, so we were only allowed a small amount, it had to go round/ last the family.

Pennyplant19 · 11/09/2024 18:52

Awww....happy memories. Lucozade with the foil top and orange wrapper and some Tuc biscuits. I feel looked after just thinking about it 🥰

Exactly, a small glass was the portion, swiftly put back in the cupboard.

Nothing like today when people drink huge amounts, this is why when people go on about the sugar, because they misunderstand that portions sizes were much smaller

Witchbitch20 · 11/09/2024 18:57

Yes!

I have a very heavy cold, 5 weeks after having COVID and I feel extremely sorry for myself.

I know that cellophane wrapped bottle would make me feel better.
