Tacos, what's the point of them?

Can someone explain the mystery of tacos for me? DS is constantly mithering that he wants tacos but I don't get them at all. So you get this hard shell thingy that you fill with hot chilli. Then you try to eat it but as soon as you bite into it, the whole thing falls apart and lands on your lap.

Clearly I'm missing something, like someone who's never seen pasta before thinking you eat it raw or something. Anyone up for teaching an old cat something they've clearly failed to learn themselves?

My DS is obsessed with spaghetti tacos. Think yourself lucky that you are only on level 1.

I’ve had it, thought it would be worse than it was tbf. 😃

Bignanna · 11/09/2024 15:13

They’re overrated imo, prefer a nice sandwich!

Wednesdaysotherchild · 11/09/2024 15:17

YANBU - the hard shell ones are an annoying waste of time!

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 11/09/2024 15:19

They are tasty and quick.

At home I just eat them with a knife and fork...

Oh, behave!

They would just shatter into little pieces 😂

Scampuss · 11/09/2024 15:29

GladBlueSlug · 11/09/2024 15:11

No, you don’t..!? 😂😫 You seriously eat tacos with a knife and fork?

and @AbigailisPartiedOut

Yeah, I knew it would get this response 🤣

First time I ever had tacos (decades ago) they were served with cutlery, and it kinda stuck.

Tarkan · 11/09/2024 15:35

If you use a soft corn tortilla around the outside of a hard one you get an easy taco to hold but still get that good crunch in every bite. Grin I learned that in Florida in the mid 90s thanks to Taco Bell. Blush

There's a fab Mexican place in my town and all the tacos I've had there have been soft shell ones but I'm obsessed with their brisket beef nachos. Shredded beef, queso blanco, roasted corn pico, crema, chimichurri, cheese and coriander all on top of lovely crunchy nachos. They're just so good.

Although nothing will beat the Mexican restaurant I went to in Juneau, Alaska. They do cheese enchiladas that are just to die for and I still dream about them 11 years later. That's also where I fell in love with chimichangas for the first time.

invisiblecat · 11/09/2024 15:39

I totally agree with you OP. We had them once in the mid 1980's at a friend's house, and we were that keen we've never had them again since!

Just a messy, crispy, splodgy, irritating faff.

Oh, and to make things worse, the friend we were staying with pronounced it rather bafflingly as "Tay-coss".

Cantbelievethatimafoolagain · 11/09/2024 15:41

You can put the hard shell inside the soft shell to stop it falling apart

GladBlueSlug · 11/09/2024 15:42

I miss Chipotle in America.

SkytreeMadeOfClay · 11/09/2024 15:45

Mmmm..nothing to add but my son makes soft tuna steak tacos with chipotle and slaw. And they are so good! The rigid shell kind, not so much

MouseofCommons · 11/09/2024 15:52

Tacos are indeed annoying.
Quesadillas and burritos are much better. Love veggie Mexican food.

shivbo2014 · 11/09/2024 16:08

I could have written this post. My dp is always asking for tacos and I just do not get it!

MrTiddlesTheCat · 11/09/2024 16:44

DS is 10 and has autism. Obsessed with food videos on youtube. I now expect he'll be obsessed with tacos for at least the next 10 years. DD also has autism and became obsessed with sweetcorn when she was 2 and it is still her primary food group 28 years later.

We love tacos! My advice would be to pick the taco up high, to like face height, and then eat it kind of from below, so that you funnel it into your mouth, rather than eating it from above, which invariably turns into a soggy mess. But soft shell all the way!

badsisgoodsis · 11/09/2024 17:57

Tacos are one of my favourite things.

You layer the shell-

Lettuce
Chilli
Salsa
Sour cream
Cheese

Layer upon layer of deliciousness

Trick is to not make your chilli too runny

JennyfromtheBlok · 11/09/2024 18:05

Don’t make the chilli filling wet or saucy 😅🤣

It needs to be drier than a Chilli. We also have tacos with chicken (basically what you would put in a Fajita)

I put the fillings in (don’t over fill)
then pretty much snap the taco in half along the ‘fold’ and eat it like a crispy sandwich.

How do you eat yours 🤣

You are simply doing it wrong if this is your experience. Because Mexican food is nothing like this.
Cheap Tex-mex can be.

The point of tacos is they’re delicious. Each bite has a variety of flavours, temperatures and textures from the tortilla, the main filling and salsas. Tacos don’t have to be a hard shell. Soft corn tortillas are more traditional (though harder to get in the UK)

Every supermarket I've been in sells soft tortillas

angstypant · 11/09/2024 19:23

Hard shell tacos aren't really authentic and aren't much found in Mexico. It's an American creation

Is this a thing or a your-DS thing? @rewilded

I so want tacos now.

But how do you eat it without half of it disappearing down your cleavage?

😂
