Tacos, what's the point of them?

Can someone explain the mystery of tacos for me? DS is constantly mithering that he wants tacos but I don't get them at all. So you get this hard shell thingy that you fill with hot chilli. Then you try to eat it but as soon as you bite into it, the whole thing falls apart and lands on your lap.

Clearly I'm missing something, like someone who's never seen pasta before thinking you eat it raw or something. Anyone up for teaching an old cat something they've clearly failed to learn themselves?

Line your plate with a soft tortilla, eat the crunchy one leaning over your plate. Two tacos for the price of one.

Genius @LilBowWow 😁

But how do you eat it without half of it disappearing down your cleavage?

Lean into the taco and accept a certain amount of wearing your food, I’m afraid. 😟

Stresshead84x · 11/09/2024 12:14

There's just something about the crispy shell with the soft fillings haha, it just works even though it's messy.

BarbaraHoward · 11/09/2024 12:16

The first time we went out for lunch with newborn DC2 in the pram to our favourite cafe they had a delicious fish taco special on. The crispy, saltiness of the taco shell combined with the flavours and seasoning within was delicious and the perfect pick me up for my exhausted soul. I'm still thinking of them.

DC2 is 4. Blush

i love most of the Mexican food I’ve tried but I don’t like hard shell tacos (or those soft shell boat ones from the supermarket) but I do love the filling so I make mine into a burrito instead. Easier to avoid spilling everywhere lol

DramaLlamaBangBang · 11/09/2024 12:19

Just get a box of tacos, give them to him and tell him to crack on filling and eating them while everyone else has soft tacos. See how long he lasts when all his dinner falls out onto his plate. Make him clear up the mess.

Scampuss · 11/09/2024 12:20

At home I just eat them with a knife and fork...

samedifferent · 11/09/2024 12:22

As others have said tacos aren't meant to be crispy, they aren't meant to have mince or lettuce in them. So it isn't surprising this doesn't work very well.
They are meant to be soft, quite small, have a spoonful of meat or fish in them and a drizzle of condiment.
Just eat loaded nachos if you want a crispy experience.

That's the beauty...a midnight snack for later 😂

MotherWol · 11/09/2024 12:41

For anyone who's not seen it, the Taco Chronicles series on Netflix is a brilliant guide to the different taco styles and regional variations on tacos - there's even an episode on American (crispy) tacos!

mitogoshi · 11/09/2024 13:24

We make soft tacos, so use wraps not the shells, you bend them over at the end. Delicious yum!

mitogoshi · 11/09/2024 13:26

Best taco recipe ever

Get a burrito instead? As far as I can gather, fillings are potentially identical

As a comedian I forget the name of said…

“All Mexican food is the same, it’s just folded differently”

NoSnowdrop · 11/09/2024 13:28

Roll on Taco Friday. Best day of the week in this house!

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 11/09/2024 13:32

Soft corn tortillas are more traditional (though harder to get in the UK)

They're in the same place as all the other taco stuff in all my local supermarkets.

coxesorangepippin · 11/09/2024 13:33

They're really good and great for getting veg into kids

I use onions, peppers and diced courgette

What blasphemy is this? Tacos are the perfect delivery mechanism for a gorgeous combination of meat, lettuce, tomato, cheese and spices.

QUITE.

OP, come to this house with that thread title, I dare you <grabs pitchfork>

EternallyDelighted · 11/09/2024 13:57

Yes they are messy but they are so worth it, all the contrasts, spicy/cool, hot/cold, crunchy/soft.

Taco shell
Lettuce
Spicy mince or black beans
Chopped up tomatoes
Salsa
Guacamole
Sour cream
Cheese (last so it doesn't melt)

Autumnweddingguest · 11/09/2024 14:00

I thought the point of tacos was to prevent me eating an entire family pack of Doritos and calling it dinner. They tame the nachos desire with healthy meat and salad and spicy sauces.

evtheria · 11/09/2024 14:01

You are, and I cannot stress this enough, being unreasonable.

TheBossOfMe · 11/09/2024 14:08

I haven't had tacos in years, and this thread has just made me remember that I used to love them, so I've just added everything to make tacos with to this weekend's grocery delivery. MN made me do it 😂

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 11/09/2024 14:10

Historically they were to make a meal out of just small bits of meat and vegetables, like a lot of traditional dishes around the world. The meat is often slow-cooked cheaper cuts too.

If he needs hard shell (because he saw it on tiktok probably), make it up and put the whole thing in a large lettuce leaf, that will contain everything. Soft shell with real nixtamalized corn tortillas is better though! If you're in London While Foods sells them.

rewilded · 11/09/2024 14:14

My DS is obsessed with spaghetti tacos. Think yourself lucky that you are only on level 1.

Oh thanks for this. Watched ep1 over lunch. Really enjoyed it. Want to try a la pastor taco now!
We use soft shells in our house - not keen on the hard shells. Sainsbury's do half corn half what tortillas which are nicer than the full wheat ones.

No, you don’t..!? 😂😫 You seriously eat tacos with a knife and fork?
