Allergies at a child's party

I'm hoping the wisdom and experience of Mumsnetters could help me out with this one....

I'm hosting a birthday party for DC. The collective allergies include- eggs, dairy and gluten. I'm not going to even start contemplating baking a cake to cater for that (DC will get a cake with family the following day) but what can I use to substitute for a cake, as having Happy Birthday sung is a BIG deal for DC.

Any suggestions?

As a child, I once had a jelly instead of a cake. Green / blue and in a big glass dish and decorated to look like a pond. I loved it!

My kid doesn’t have allergies but some of his friends and cousins do so I always make sure the cake is GF which is super easy to do with free from flour etc. If you don’t want to cook, why not just buy a few boxes of free from cupcakes, make a tower and call it the cake! I know allergy kids are usually used to not enjoying the same treats as the other kids, but it makes such a difference when they can !

I would do a rice crispie treat hedgehog.

Make a rice crispie body (rice crispies mixed with melted marshmallows and then squished into shape) then put cut up pieces of fruit on toothpicks for spines and some cut up sweeties for the face. All dc can have a couple of fruit toothpicks each and a portion of the body. If you want extra, surround the hegehog with a selection of more sweets and dole those out too

If the allergies are anaphylaxis or coeliac then I would ask what their preference is.

Sainsbury's have a gluten free vegan chocolate birthday cake!

What about vegetarians with gelatine?

Aside from the fact the OP didn’t mention any vegetarians, it is possible to get vegetarian jelly.

Were hosting a kids party soon too. I'm going with GF chicken nuggets that are also egg and dairy free, and 2 types of pizza, one is regular and the other gluten and dairy free. Both pizzas are egg free. Then crisps, fruit and veg.

I've made a proper birthday cake, and buying one from asda for the allergy kids that is gluten, egg and dairy free. Cake will be going home in the party bags.

I do think its a massive shame to not provide cake for the allergy kids. They will notice, and it is very easy to buy one!

Could you link? I was trying to find it but struggling and would be handy to bookmark it for the future. I’ve got one child in a class with zero allergies and one with loads in her class.

coxesorangepippin · 10/09/2024 18:32

Forget the cake, just have a sweetie table? Sorry not sure how to say that without sounding like some sort of a pedo!

A table where you choose jelly beans, midget gems, lollies etc

Sainsbury's have several that are suitable and they really don't cost all that much. It's definitely not as difficult these days to be inclusive.

Bunnycat101 · 10/09/2024 18:36

I’ve had a lazy day one before - didn’t realise they now have chocolate so that is a bonus!

Thehonestbadger · 10/09/2024 18:53

I know others have told you already but the standard practice here is to get a regular supermarket cake to sing with a put in the party bags for non allergy kids then a pack of the free from caterpillar cake slices to use for the allergy kids. They’re only like £3 so hardly blow the budget and all the kids will be disappointed if there is no cake and candles

This is a great idea. Thank you.
