Only 46 but looking forward to retirement!

I’m only 46 but more and more recently I have been thinking and looking forwarc to retirement! I feel terrible as it feels like I am wishing my life away. I hope I can retire from my full time role at 60 and then spend time running my own business which I currently do in addition to full time work. So I would not stop work completely. Also my DCs will be adults then currently they are 10 and 8. Also I hope to have my mortgage paid off. I think I am mostly feeling like it I will feel more ‘free’ free of full time grind, free of the mortgage. Kids hopefully grown up and more independent. Do we all have thoughts like this?

Yes. I counted down the last 12 years of work payday by payday.

Retirement is amazing. I'm 3 years in and loving life and the time I now have to enjoy stuff.
Chin up, you will get there.

RosieLeaLovesTea · 08/09/2024 16:09

@omega4ever wow I am so jealous! Glad to hear it’s a good as
you thought. I have always enjoyed my work and strives to do lore and work my way up the ladder. But over last couple of months just had this feeling that I want to be free of it all. I think it’s made worse by the fact that my DH does not work - he is other income sources and does not need to do I see him swanning about as if he is retired!

I don't but my dh does. He's 48 (I'm 40). He'd love to retire at 58 but realistically I don't think his pension is good enough. We've been mortgage free for a few years, but dc costs a lot and we want to have a nice lifestyle, so I don't foresee our costs coming down much.

Q124 · 08/09/2024 16:30

I'm the opposite. I'm 4 years younger than you and the thought of retirement fills me with dread. I absolutely love working, love my job. I'm still desperately climbing the corporate ladder.

Guavafish1 · 08/09/2024 16:30

Me to and I’m 39!

BiscuitlyBoyle · 08/09/2024 16:31

I’m counting the years. I’d bloody love to retire.

Ribenaberry12 · 08/09/2024 16:35

Yes. I’m going in 10 years and it seems so far away.

TFMinx · 08/09/2024 16:40

38 and I would love to retire! Oh, the things I will do! Just 30 years left...

Whydontclothesfitanymore · 08/09/2024 16:44

Counting the years too. Mortgage is paid off the same year I qualify for state pension. It will be a good year that year.

WmFnKdSg1234 · 08/09/2024 17:01

I would like to retire - but I am unreasonably keen on the income working provides!

Retirement or working less would help me to look after my dad (in his 90's) and take better care of myself.

9 years and counting...

solarpig · 08/09/2024 17:09

If you will be running a business you won't be retires though? I've run a small business since my eldest was born 6 years ago, it takes less hours than a ft job but most mums drop to pt with small dc anyway. I definitely don't see myself as retired!

I'm 45 and plan to retire in 10 years. My dc will be older but still at home, but I should have more freedom to pursue my own interests and pop out in the evenings. I've built up investments over the past 8 years to enable it, taking on a lot of risk but it's paid off

Twoshoesnewshoes · 08/09/2024 17:14

I felt like this this year so I’ve decided to change my career up a bit, a sort of sideways step. I‘m now more interested and motivated by the prospect of work. I could do a couple of years just counting down but I knew I definitely couldn’t and wouldn’t do 10.

CormorantStrikesBack · 08/09/2024 17:14

Hell yes. And I’m kicking myself because I spent 6 years working for a company with a final salary pension scheme which kicked in at 55yo. Left to train as a midwife and the nhs pension scheme was also final salary and if you had special class also 55yo. Then while I was a student they changed it to state pension age and career average!

LibertyStars · 08/09/2024 17:17

I'm 47 and planning to retire in 5.5 years. I have a spreadsheet with all our savings and investments on it with projections etc.

N4ish · 08/09/2024 17:18

Yes 100%. I’ve chosen not to move to a larger property so I can pay off mortgage early and plan for early(ish) retirement. For me no work satisfaction matches the joy of having time to myself to do the things I enjoy.

TemuSpecialBuy · 08/09/2024 17:18

Solidarity @RosieLeaLovesTea

I'm here with you.
i am retiring no later than 60 come hell or high water…

my IFA is very clear 😅😅😅

magicstar1 · 08/09/2024 17:22

I’m 49 and can’t wait to retire. We don’t have any children, so the plan is to get some sort of equity release and go travelling and enjoy the money.

AntiHop · 08/09/2024 17:26

I'm also 46 but anticipate needing to work for another 20 years due to my mortgage. My house is tiny but I bought on the wrong side of house price rises.

eurochick · 08/09/2024 17:47

Same. I'm late 40s. Until a few years ago I was a workaholic and was all about my work. Then I left a really toxic job and suffered burnout. I've changed career and become self-employed and am much, much happier but my perspective has changed. I'm choosier about what work I take on and am very focussed on counting down to retirement.

Nourishinghandcream · 08/09/2024 17:49

I was working hard at making retirement at 60 a reality and really looking forward to it. Not wishing my life away, just that I had so many plans.
Mid-50's and my work situation changed which allowed me to leave earlier than expected.
So far it has been everything I hoped it was going to be.😁

Waitingfordoggo · 08/09/2024 17:54

I’m also 46 and really looking forward to retirement but will probably have to work till my late 60s. I only work 20 hours a week though and in fact have never worked full time apart from five years in my early twenties (which is partly why I’ll be working till late 60s as I have a crap pension 😂)

gingercat02 · 08/09/2024 17:56

I'm hoping to go at 60 in 5 years, and although I love my job, I will have worked for 38 years by then, and that's enough, IMO.

Chewbecca · 08/09/2024 18:00

I was mid / late 40s when I realised I had had enough. Started throwing everything at the mortgage, made some plans and a redundancy each made early retirement a possibility. I highly recommend it!

Mainoo72 · 08/09/2024 18:15

I’m exactly the same. I’m late 40’s and am planning to retire at 57. Maybe a bit earlier if I can manage it. Mortgage almost paid off. Have been paying extra into pension. I can’t wait!
