Rain soaked football boots

What do you do with DH’s wet trainers and DC’s wet football boots after they’ve got soaking wet during football training? He coaches their team.
They smell so bad.

Put them in the washing machine!

Atishooo · 07/09/2024 18:37

Yep. Same.

D12troop · 07/09/2024 18:38

In the olden days you'd stuff them with newspaper and put them near but not on a heat source. I dare say the worlds moved on.

If they are leather ones, your DH and DS can stuff them with newspaper and dry them in the airing cupboard. If they are not leather, they can go in the washing machine, but get your DS in the habit of looking after his own kit as soon as possible.

This! DS17 is a referee so officiates in all sorts of weather (including today 😂). This has saved our lives from smelly football boots. 20 mins plus in the garage, job done. Very useful especially if he has two matches over the weekend. (It's on at the moment 😊).

I used to use dubbin on my stable boots, as recommended by a friend with a football playing brother. Waterproofs leather boots but still lets the leather breathe.

Deadhouseplant · 07/09/2024 18:49

Stuffed with newspaper to help dry out. You can get electric boot dryers now though.

OverReflectiveMum · 07/09/2024 19:35

Also stuff with newspaper here. Or with a tea towel or cheap kitchen paper if the recycling has just gone. Change every 30 minutes until the paper isn't obviously wet, then every couple of hours.

Littletreefrog · 07/09/2024 19:44

I was going too say stuff with newspaper. I imagine there is a gadget you can buy now but newspaper has worked for many decades.

changedmyname24 · 07/09/2024 20:39

An unused tea bag eliminates the smell, once they are dry!

AuntieStella · 07/09/2024 20:48

Stuff with newspaper and leave somewhere warm or at least well ventilated to dry out.

When not sodden and if stinky, sprinkle inside with bicarb

I'd be wary of putting through the washing machine - it can degrade any parts that are plastic including wrecking the supportiveness of the midsole.

NewName24 · 07/09/2024 21:06

DH (and dc, depending on age) would wash the mud off, then stuff with newspaper and put somewhere warm to dry out (where sun is shining or airing cupboard).

Definitely wouldn't put in the washing machine!

Tea bags.
I feel for you op, my DS's football boots smelt like actual cat piss. In the end I got an outdoor storage box and kept them in their as they really were that bad

Mumofteenandtween · 07/09/2024 21:14

We have an electric shoe dryer. It is brilliant!

Does it?! That could be a real game changer!

We found it does 😁 I actually use camomile tea bags as we have some expired ones, but I think any work.

MammaGisAF · 07/09/2024 21:25

Hairdryer and then airing cupboard. Will be trying that tea bag tip!

Some cat litter in something like an old sock is great for eliminating smells if it has got that far.

Camomile?! There’s posh!!

Let’s hope Lidl ones are up to the job 🤣

🤣 years old camomile that we bought for something healthy & never used 🤣

Lidl are perfect, I'm sure

deepstarfish · 07/09/2024 21:33

My DH coaches our son's team. I would tell DH to sort out the stinky boots. He would probably shove paper in them. We store them outside when dry in the porch so smells not an issue. I wouldn't put them in the washing machine ever, but then both my kids have wide feet so football boots that fit are really hard to find and £££.

SuePreemly · 07/09/2024 21:35

The old newspaper trick works really well. Not on a radiator but underneath for convection.

For the stink, pour bicarbonate of soda into the shoe and leave it in there at least 24hrs. It'll absorb a lot of the nasty niffs.

CheeryUser · 07/09/2024 21:36

Do you all still have airing cupboards? I’ve just realised I haven’t had one in my last two homes.

YummyBelicious · 07/09/2024 21:38

Also rate the shoe/boot dryer machine. Game changer in this house
