If you had to choose between netflix, prime or something else?

What would you choose? We have netflix, but ds reckons he has seen everything on it that he is interested in. Id rather delete it and get something else rather than just get more, but I don't know if the others are as good

I watch everything on a torrent streaming site.

TwoBlueFish · 08/09/2024 11:08

We switch between them. We always have prime video just because we have Amazon prime. Currently have Disney plus, will soon switch to Apple to watch slow horses and a few other things, might do Netflix after that depending on what’s available.

unlikelychump · 08/09/2024 12:43

Hmm. Not really conclusive. Sorry if my op wasn't clear it was more for kids TV. Sounds like Disney and now plus might be in the frame, people not so keen on prime.

I watch more on Disney+ than anything. No young kids here, and the stuff on there tends to be older, but there's a few films I like.
Prime is pants.

Blarn · 08/09/2024 14:09

My dc watch all their kids programmes on Netflix and the iplayer. They are 7 and 9.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 08/09/2024 14:26

We rotate (Martin Lewis tip) so we only have one at a time. At the moment it's Disney (Shogun, Star Wars) but we are going back to Netflix imminently (Cobra Kai) then Prime (Rings of Power, We were the last to die).

You can always find movies on whatever service so why spent more than a tenner a month on others. You can only watch one at a time!
Oh we do pay our tv licence though as we love BBC

Whatwaswrongwiththatusername · 08/09/2024 14:40

It's difficult to recommend anything properly, due to interests, etc. But I have a lot of time, for irrelevant reasons, but to say I do tend to spend a lot of time streaming and it gets really hard to find anything that catches my interest that I've not already seen. However, when I am trying to find anything I tend to go to (streaming, paid for apps, not including itv, iPlayer etc) apps in this particular order: nowtv > Netflix > prime. I did used to have Apple+ and I'd say that was near the start of the list until I had watched everything faster than new stuff being added, which then made it go way down the list.

If I include free streaming I'd put iPlayer first - and is in fact first on my list above nowtv. Itv, ch4 & 5, used ocassionally, in spurts whilst I'm waiting for the paid for apps to add new content. Overall in my list tho I would say that usually before, or after prime, so relatively low down.

Don't forget, as well as the usual streaming apps there are other free ones such a U (previously ukplay), which can be good for a few series but not great enough to be in the regular cycle, plus also stv. I used to have a discovery+ sub and that was actually quite good but very slow to add new content, so once the good stuff was watched it then became pointless so was removed.

If it matters, I share some of the streaming apps. So I pay for Netflix and think overall worth it, and I have my own account on the other person's Prime, and we both more than make up that cost just for orders and delivery costs saved. However, if it was me paying for my own I'm not sure that Prime tv alone would be worth the cost, if you take prime delivery etc out of the equation.

Plex is another one that's good. I have my own Plex account and access to I think 3 other people's servers on Plex, so can watch whatever they add or just ask them to add a series or something for me if I can't find it anywhere else. I couldn't host a server or anything of my own tho!
You then have different free apps here and there that you ocassionally hear of and give a try but they just tend to come and go.

So, no idea if any of this is useful as it's obviously subjective, but that's just my opinion. FWIW, I have no children at home, I tend to watch series more than films and I love documentaries/true life (not reality), a good drama and the odd bit of mindless blandness to send me to sleep. Don't watch a lot of comedy, but on all of the above they do have a lot of choice in most categories.

Oh, and to add, nowtv comes in 4 main parts. So you have a movies pass, a tv pass, sports pass and then also a separate child's pass. So you can choose which ones you'd use - I have the tv and movies pass, tho watch more on the tv one.

Netflix has a separate kids section, but I think you can also add a child's own separate "kids" profile for your kids to use. I think Prime gives that option as well, but I've not really noticed that much.

I think Apple has by far the best stuff at the moment - Slow Horses is completely brilliant and worth any amount of money to see imho.

I only signed up for Apple intending to keep it for a month while I watched everything but there is so much good stuff on there, I’ve had it about 4 months now and still have loads to get through.

redgum · 08/09/2024 15:25

Apple is irritatingly good, every time I wanted to cancel something else would come out and they often do it weekly.

On Apple we like Slow Horses, The Morning Show, Silo, Severance, The Last Thing He Told Me, Masters of the Air, Invasion, Presumed Innocent, Blackbird, Palm Royale. And on and on it goes!

PuppyMonkey · 08/09/2024 15:35

Same list as mine @redgum Grin

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 08/09/2024 15:48

We rotate. We'll do a couple of months on Netflix, then switch to Disney+ for a month or two, then prime video, then something else etc.

It does lead to the occasional argument that DD hasn't finished x, or DP wants to watch Schiits Creek for the 18th time, but it works well enough for us.

C8H10N4O2 · 08/09/2024 17:12

Rotating can be cost effective. Between us as a family I have use of Prime, Apple, Disney+ and Netflix.

Of those Prime is utter rubbish - I'm thinking of ditching it unless they produce a lower priced delivery-only version of the product. I find the video and other services poor value and wouldn't miss them. The intrusive nature of the adverts on paid services is horrible and confusing, cutting in without a splash screen and half way through a dramatic scene or even sentence.

Apple is the best quality content in terms of smaller catalogue but high quality content - I use a lot of the catalogue

Disney+ and Netflix both have good varied catalogues but you can swap them around - have a few months and then swap.

I don't have any other cable/satellite services and don't feel any need for them.

BigDecisionWorthIt · 08/09/2024 19:08

If I had to choose between the two, I'd choose Prime.

If you use the free Prime next day delivery option 14 times over 12 months, it's pretty much paid for itself.
That in itself is a game changer with how forgetful I can be on ordering stuff and usually realising when I'm pretty much all out.

xyz111 · 08/09/2024 19:25

We have Prime, but still have to pay for things (we don't). I'd personally keep Netflix as there's always new things coming out. We have Disney but mainly for my DS7. We haven't really watched anything on the adult side of it.

Precipice · 08/09/2024 19:27

I get along very happily without any of them.

I wouldn't be watching enough to make it worthwhile.

CheshireCat1 · 08/09/2024 19:28

BBC iPlayer is my go to.

Chewbecca · 08/09/2024 19:29

Try having nothing other than free TV for a while - it's fine!

Ago · 08/09/2024 19:31

I have prime all year around, mostly for the other benefits like shipping and the monthly games etc but use it to watch stuff too, but every couple of months I pick up a netflix subscription for a month or disney for a month etc

HeritageVegetable · 08/09/2024 19:33

I'd get a free trial of Apple, which is excellent, and subscribe to Disney + which has lots of good stuff for children, and maybe later do a 7 day free trial of Now TV, and then cancel and hope they offer you a cut-price deal to continue. Always worth giving Now TV your email address because they'll frequently offer you really good deals to come back to them (eg one pound a month for Sky Movies for 6 months). Sky/Now should always be treated mean and kept keen.

eta here's the Apple free trial guide

puppyparent · 08/09/2024 20:56

Prime for films.

Netflix for series and sensational documentaries.

Disney+ for animation obv.

IPlayer for British content obv.

Apple - we have this but I can't think of anything good I've seen on it. Oh wait - not true - Presumed Innocent with Jake G was pretty good.
