Do you have retirement travel plans…mine might be a little unrealistic!

Not a serious thread really, but I have just realised there are 195 countries in the world. 44 in Europe alone. There simply won’t be time (or money!) to fit them all in! I thought I’d see everywhere one day.

Luckily I still have a few years to plan and prioritise!!!

Interrail around Europe!

Spenditlikebeckham · 06/09/2024 22:16

The only place I want to visit in my dotage is Mull. Magical place. Absolutely magical.

HermioneWeasley · 06/09/2024 22:20

Yes, my entire represent plan is to travel

180orsotogo · 06/09/2024 22:22

I haven’t been to Mull but have had a couple of beautiful trips to the west coast of Scotland.

Yes @Monvelo interrail might be the answer. So much to see.

I would like to move to Scarborough North Yorkshire and walk along the beach every day. That would be my idea of heaven

MrsMoastyToasty · 06/09/2024 22:36

I want to do the North Coast 500, but am prepared to wait until the infrastructure is better. I also want to go to Shetland.

We go to the central belt of Scotland and to Mull regularly as we have family there.

ViciousCurrentBun · 06/09/2024 22:40

DH is the best travelled person I know and has been to at least 120 countries, maybe more. His parents even though it was the 70’s and 80’s did holidays all over Europe when it was more unusual. He then travelled the world between his degrees in the very late eighties for almost 2 years. He travelled with work from 1994 to this year though post covid that dropped off a lot.

I have been to about 20 countries, I’m never catching up :)

Sounds lovely. I am not easily contented, always dreaming about travelling.

That looks like a fantastic trip. One for the list!
Scotland is stunning.

That’s amazing. I bet he has some stories to tell. Does he plan on resting in retirement?!

When I was backpacking in my twenties I thought that one day I'd visit all the countries in the world.. but then I got a job, got a mortgage, got married & had 3 kids & my travelling slowed down... but I'm currently on a mission to visit 50 countries before I'm 50.
I'm literally addicted to researching countries to visit 😂

F1rugby23 · 06/09/2024 23:06

Yes, thinking of renting somewhere abroad every year for a few months and getting to know different countries well/ improving language skills, probably renting out my home to afford it. If I like somewhere a lot might go back every year and try to make it like a second home. Unfortunately no early retirement for me so depends on health etc.

caringcarer · 06/09/2024 23:26

I found my health deteriorated a lot between 55 and 63. I do want to go to Australia though. I'm hoping to go health permitting Xmas 2025. Boxing Day Ashes cricket tour.

ViciousCurrentBun · 06/09/2024 23:29

@180orsotogo He is retiring very soon and we are buying a campervan and travelling all round the UK and then to Europe. Then the plan is travel across Canada, I have never been there but he has.

180orsotogo · 06/09/2024 23:33

I love researching holidays @Slinkycat22 . The research is definitely part of the fun.

@F1rugby23 i too like the idea of living somewhere for a while rather than just experiencing it as a tourist. I’ve thought about renting my house out to help fund travel costs.

I hope to drop to a couple of days a week early if I can but I won’t have a lot of spare money for travel.

I hope your health allows you to travel. I think for many people health will be an issue working to retirement age.

I still got very long time till retirement but few places I want to visit either before or after retirement - Alaska in September to watch bears during Salmon season 🥹, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan to see true wild horse and the sheer vastness of the landscape

I retired at 56 and immediately went off to SE Asia for 7 weeks, have since done 2 months in south and central America, Been to Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Rome, Shetland, borneo, Barcelona, and Kos. Planning Argentina, Peru and Bolivia next year and possibly Croatia. I am 62 now and will travel as often as possible while I can.

LlynTegid · 07/09/2024 11:07

I have several places I plan to visit in the first few years after I retire. Just don't know in what order.

I want to travel in Alaska and also go to Japan and S Korea as priorities

Beezknees · 07/09/2024 14:37

Not for retirement, I'm doing it now.

I won't be able to afford to retire until state pension age, who knows what my health will be like then or if I'll even still be alive!

I'm trying to do as many long haul places as I can now while I'm young and healthy. Leaving the short haul and UK for when I'm older and might not be able to travel as far.

Helloworld56 · 07/09/2024 14:39

I would love a rail journey through the Canadian Rockies.
Alternatively, a rail trip through China.
I'm retired but unfortunately not enough cash to realize my dreams.
