Do you have retirement travel plans…mine might be a little unrealistic!

Not a serious thread really, but I have just realised there are 195 countries in the world. 44 in Europe alone. There simply won’t be time (or money!) to fit them all in! I thought I’d see everywhere one day.

Luckily I still have a few years to plan and prioritise!!!

Although to be fair my idea of "travelling" might not be the same as someone else's as I only like to be away for maximum 3 weeks at a time. So it's more "holidays" I suppose 🤣

When I was backpacking in my twenties I thought that one day I'd visit all the countries in the world.. but then I got a job, got a mortgage, got married & had 3 kids & my travelling slowed down... but I'm currently on a mission to visit 50 countries before I'm 50.
I'm literally addicted to researching countries to visit 😂

I tried to 'keep up with my age' in countries but Covid did for that. I need about 7 more very soon! I'm losing ground, although I did go to three new countries this year.

Can I suggest the Been app for those of you keeping score? Very good and you can put in the 'wish' countries as well.

Our plan is to have a base country and travel around the region. So for example, get a cheap place in Leon in Nicaragua, then travel around Guatemala, El Salvador and so on. Has the benefit of having a 'home' and somewhere to leave stuff.

I've been to about forty countries, plus a few that no longer exist, e.g. Czechoslovakia.

I'd say that you don't need to visit ever country, but you can get very broad experiences by looking at different locations and experiences rather than countries per se.

We went to Iceland and New Zealand within a few weeks. Whales, glaciers and hot springs at both poles!

It’s great to hear of people’s travel and plans. There are ideas that hadn’t even occurred to me.
i think I will have to be very strategic with retirement and money. I’m hoping I can travel frugally when I don’t have to consider school holidays.

My plan is to snowbird in Florida Jan-March and then summer on Cape Cod each year.

Not unrealistic at all 😅😬

Better start upping my pension contributions!

I have just discovered what amazing value European interrail passes are.

Driving along the East Coast of America in a Cadillac, staying in Rosebud Motels and meeting Stevie, David, Alexa, Johnny and Moira.

I keep a (long) list on my phone of places I would like to visit, and add to it regularly. We have now early/ semi retired and are starting to work our way through it.
Many more Greek islands, and other European places like Slovenia and inland Spain are on the list as well as bigger trips like most of Asia, Australia & NZ, Pacific / south sea islands and some of Africa & safari are still on there!

TeenTraumaTrials · 07/09/2024 17:59

New Zealand
Singapore/Vietnam and some other Asian countries
South Africa
South America
Inter Railing in Europe
Canada

We are taking early retirement to do this all when still fit and healthy enough to enjoy it and have the energy. Very much inspired by Race Across the world (locations not necessarily means of)travel

Cynic17 · 07/09/2024 18:02

I want to travel as much as possible, inc Australia, a sleeper train in Europe, northern India, the new Grand Museum in Cairo touring Slovenia..... In fact, as many places as I can.

Usou · 07/09/2024 18:13

I retire in a year or so.

Planning to go to Japan overland starting in Armenia, then Georgia, Azerbaijan, the stans then China and/or Korea. By train as much as possible, depending on borders being open.

I want to do the North Coast 500, but am prepared to wait until the infrastructure is better. I also want to go to Shetland.

We go to the central belt of Scotland and to Mull regularly as we have family there.

I did this in May using a Rabbie's tour. I think if the infrastructure improved it would spoil it to be honest. Also I'm not sure how it could be done. Some of it is very remote.
