Are they a part of a roast chicken dinner in your house?

What do you consider as essential components of a full roast dinner?

I'm not a roast purist and always have Yorkshires, cauliflower cheese and stuffing with any meat! Also mashed carrot and swede and something green (tenderstem broccoli, French beans or cabbage) all doused in butter and LOTS of black pepper. Possibly braised red cabbage. Roasties obviously and possibly roast parsnips. Pigs in blankets I would only do if they're available in the shops so generally just in the run up to Christmas (which appears to have already started... 😳). I wouldn't bother with assembling them myself. Might stick some chipolatas on if we're having chicken but tbh a roast is a bit of an occasional extravagant treat in our house so we'd usually go for something a bit fancier than chicken - beef/lamb/maybe pork fillet.

We probably only have a roast once a month or so, so we go all-out. My parents still have roasts every Sunday and they're generally a lot more simple (obviously still nice but I'd rather some kind of curry or fish dish or steak or something than a simple roast most of the time!)

Now that's the answer I've been waiting for 😂

I don't get bread sauce though...

(Whispers) We have them with chops and grilled chicken breasts as well.

Of course if we have sausages we have toad in the hole.

My favourite though is plate size ones with beef stew in them.

Can you tell we like Yorkies, and DH makes them from scratch, they rise like the gods.

We have them with any kind of roast. Also with sausage and mash. DH and DD adore them although I'm ambivalent to be honest.

DD has even requested them as an alternative to a potato product with scrambled egg and beans for a quick tea! Grin

We have them with every roast instead of spuds (awaits howls of anguish......)

AliceLisle · 05/09/2024 13:12

On the rare occasions that we have beef I'll make Yorkshires. We have roast chicken much more frequently and have stuffing with that. I get my Yorkshire pudding fix with mid week toad in the hole.
When I was a young child, a very long time ago, it was my job to make the Yorkshire pudding batter every Sunday. We used rough tablespoon measures and not nearly as many eggs as some recipes today. They always seemed to rise. We ate them before rather than with the Sunday roast covered with lots of gravy. Sometimes they had dried mixed herbs in them, sometimes sultanas which seems really odd now but I loved them. It filled people up before the meat so that there was enough left over for Monday.

GigiAnnna · 05/09/2024 13:14

I don't think they are essential but it's better if they are on the plate, the same goes for stuffing.

Do you make individual ones or a slab?

ehb102 · 05/09/2024 13:21

My child was very upset when we did roast chicken and no Yorkshires. Soft hearted daddy changed practice to make baby happy. Mummy likes a Yorkshire so she's not complaining - I like them stodgy like my Northamptonshire granny did them, none of these fluffy crispy things.

@BooseysMom

In addition to getting the fat really hot before pouring in the batter and cooking in a hot oven, I’ve found the Mary Berry Yorkshires recipe pretty foolproof.

www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/yorkshire_pudding_69240

I've never had a failure with that recipe. Works every time. Agree about getting the fat really hot, but also, do not open the oven door!

And yes with roast chicken (or any number of other things)

RightOnTheEdge · 05/09/2024 13:33

I have them with any roast, and sometimes with sausages, and sometimes with cottage pie!

Hoplolly · 05/09/2024 13:33

Standard on any roast dinner. My requirements at a minimum are

Roast meat of some description, yorkshire pudding, stuffing, cauliflower cheese, carrots, peas, sprouts, parsnips, roast potatoes and mash potatoes (don't come for me).

Pigs--in-blankets, braised cabbage, cheesy sprouts and a second stuffing dish is reserved for Christmas.

UltramarineViolet · 05/09/2024 13:33

I do then with any roast as my DS adores them!

Growing up we only had them with beef but I am a convert to having them with any variety of roast dinner

My YPs are legendary!

Yorkshire puddings are for roast beef, and roast beef only! We have stuffing with chicken if I'm really pushing the boat out!

Youre Wrong The West Wing GIF

If you aren’t having Yorkshire pudding AND stuffing you aren’t doing it right.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 05/09/2024 14:48

With anything surely? I have had them with curry instead of nan bread. On their own with a mug of gravy. For breakfast.

Food of the gods.

I’m 59 and from Yorkshire….we had them with jam for breakfast when we were kids…..all the leftovers

evtheria · 05/09/2024 17:11

They're my favourite part of a roast, it doesn't matter what meat it is. I've happily eaten them on their own with gravy (no roast following), they're the best!

Beansandneedles · 05/09/2024 17:19

Officially they're for beef...but I don't eat beef so, they just go with each and every roast!

geoger · 05/09/2024 17:20

We always have Yorkshires, stuffing, and pigs in blankets with a roast - regardless of the meat. Plus carrots, broccoli and cauliflower cheese.
I love making one huge Yorkshire pudding for dessert too - tastes great with ice cream and golden syrup/nutella

Crikeyalmighty · 05/09/2024 17:31

Particularly good with haggis in the middle plus gravy, mash and veg

caringcarer · 05/09/2024 17:37

I make Yorkshire puddings with beef, pork, chicken, lamb and turkey at Xmas. I'm married to a Yorkshire man.

Strokethefurrywall · 05/09/2024 17:53

Yorkshire puddings go with every roast

AdaColeman · 05/09/2024 17:58

I only have Yorkshire pudding when I'm having roast beef, served as a separate course with gravy before the meat course. That was how my Mother always served them, and I've done the same.

With roast chicken I'd usually have stuffing, roast potatoes, vegetables eg carrots and braised celery, and gravy. But sometimes I just have chips and mayonnaise with roast chicken. Wine Wine

UnravellingTheWorld · 05/09/2024 17:59

My mother only has them with beef, so I was brought up with almost never having them.

My husband has shown me the error of this! We have Yorkshires with our weekly chicken roast and are too busy getting fat and happy to pay attention to mother's disapproving glances.
