Can you swim and ride a bike?

I kind of assumed that most adults (save for those prevented from doing so by health reasons) could swim and ride a bike, but my friend reckons not.

So can you swim (so by that I mean at least a 50 meter length) and ride a bike?

Yes, I'm not brilliant at either but can do both.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 04/09/2024 17:49

Yes, and so can DH

thebastardsgotme · 04/09/2024 17:49

Yes but not at the same time.

Yes, like you I think most people can.

TulipTuesday · 04/09/2024 17:49

I can ride a bike but I can’t swim

MirandaWest · 04/09/2024 17:49

Yes. Although not both at the same time.

DH can’t swim. Has tried to learn. Can’t reliably ride a bike.

Both my DC (18 and 20) can swim and ride a bike

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 04/09/2024 17:50

Yes, I don’t know any adults personally who can’t do both.

NoShirtNoShoesNoSheldon · 04/09/2024 17:50

Yes, I’m early 50’s
DM early 70’s can’t swim, but can ride a bike.

sanityisamyth · 04/09/2024 17:50

Yes. Both

Ineffable23 · 04/09/2024 17:51

Yes, both. Confident in both.

TomatoSandwiches · 04/09/2024 17:51

Yes to both.

Silviasilvertoes · 04/09/2024 17:52

thebastardsgotme · 04/09/2024 17:49

Yes but not at the same time.

Beat me to it 😂

mitogoshi · 04/09/2024 17:52

Yes but I'm unfit and slow

Spenditlikebeckham · 04/09/2024 17:52

Yes both. Now 53 yet can still remember my dgm taking me to choose my first bike!! And the terrifying Miss Smith who taught me to swim...

Pixiewombat · 04/09/2024 17:53

Yep, competently but my walking isn't great so I've had to take both up more.

PaillettenBedeckt · 04/09/2024 17:53

I can do both.

Although I'd be pretty miserable by the end of a 50 metre swim. I hate swimming now it's no longer larking around in the pool and you're supposed to be an adult who does boring lengths.

Pilotingmyownlife · 04/09/2024 17:53

I could (can't now due to disability). Both were skills I made sure my dc could do. Swimming lessons was non negotiable.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 04/09/2024 17:53

Yes. Not that keen on either, but can do both. Dh is great at both. In fact he's doing a triathlon this weekend!

TickingAlongNicely · 04/09/2024 17:53

Yes to both.
Neither of my parents can swim though. (Well I think my mum can do a token bit of breaststroke).

ZippyLimeSnake · 04/09/2024 17:53

I can do both, my partner can’t swim & nor can my brother but both can ride bikes.

Devilsmommy · 04/09/2024 17:54

Yes to both. I'd imagine it's quite a rarity for someone to not be able to do both

Featherrrr · 04/09/2024 17:56

I think I'm a rarity but I can't do either. I mean I can but very very poorly. Swimming I can maybe a length or two and that's it because I have very bad back issues. I struggle with riding a bike for similar reasons.

Dh is confident in both though and is the one who taught our 3 children!

Octavia64 · 04/09/2024 17:56

In the U.K. most schools have had swimming lessons for at least the last 40 years and it's on the national curriculum that children should be able to swim 25 metres.

Part of this is about preventing drowning,
I'd expect most adults in the U.K. to be able to swim.

Riding a bike is common in childhood but probably less widespread.

Sleepychicken · 04/09/2024 17:56

I can do both bit not brilliantly and I don’t enjoy it, my do can’t swim - nor can any of his family! My dc can do both

Trickedbyadoughnut · 04/09/2024 17:56

I can now but I learned to swim as an adult - I couldn't even tread water so a kind friend taught me that, then a colleague taught me how to do breaststroke head out of water (we worked at a beach hotel).

Eventually I took lessons in my mid-30s and can swim "properly" now. But I'd been afraid of putting my head under water all my life so it was a big thing to overcome (I can't even bear water running down my face in the shower!).

Theoretically we had swimming lessons at school, but they were often cancelled or moved and I was tall for my age so just used to put my foot on the bottom all the time.
