I want to tell my mum stop using her finger to wipe her plate!!

I'm really just venting. My mum has been staying with me a few days.

She is currently eating a sandwich and is using her finger to wipe up crumps/ sauce and licking her finger. It is disgusting. It makes me feel a bit sick. She also makes a LOT of noise while she eats, that she probably can't help. But the finger thing is not necessary.

I know if I say something she'll say she doesn't lol

Blimey OP, think yourself lucky if that is your biggest gripe about your mother.

FatmanandKnobbin · 04/09/2024 14:57

I would 100% do this in front of my kids.

I worked with a woman with used to have a yoghurt every lunch time and scratch her bits with the spoon before she continued to eat. That was pretty gross.

newbornandbreast · 04/09/2024 14:57

it isn't cake crumbs. It is the sauce/ juice that came out of her sandwich when she bit into it.

She does it with any sauce on her plate. Uses her finger to wipe it up. It's not just 1 little stray crumb. She wipes her whole finger around the plate and loudly licks it.

No her holding the sandwich doesn't bother me.

I only lived with her a few years of my childhood and we never used to eat together so I didn't notice.

My mother does this as well OP and I also find it disgusting. Last night she was doing it with bean juice. I feel like she would've told us off as kids for doing it, but I'm pretty sure I never have --! But unfortunately I think we just have to ignore.

newbornandbreast · 04/09/2024 14:59

I don't watch her eat, but I can see it from the corner of my eye. I am guessing it is a me thing, I haven't said anything.

@FatmanandKnobbin I worked with someone like that, she must have got every little bit of yoghurt out of that pot!

Have you never licked your fingers OP? What do you do if you're eating a cream cake that oozes a bit of delicious cream out, do you not lick it off?
I assume her hands are clean and she hasn't been sticking them in a turd before a meal.

CarrotsAndCheese · 04/09/2024 15:05

Never go to KFC!

How disgusting. Far more hygienic to lick the plate!

seeminglyranch · 04/09/2024 15:11

Only if you eat with dirty hands.

Flopsythebunny · 04/09/2024 15:29

Why do you invite her to eat with you when it's obvious how much you dislike her?
You would hate me. I give my dog my plate to lick clean 😂

Never go to KFC!

Finger lickin' good 😆

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 04/09/2024 15:46

It is disgusting. It makes me feel a bit sick

Really?

I don't have a problem with it with finger food like sandwiches or whatever. A roast dinner I would.

@Flopsythebunny are you aware that you can dislike someone's behaviour without actually disliking them? Also yes, letting your dog lick your plate is minging.

DrunkTinkerbell40s · 04/09/2024 15:48

Oh my god I do this all the time!!!!
I have never ever thought someone would find that gross. This thread is an eye opener!!

AltitudeCheck · 04/09/2024 15:50

I honestly don't get why this is gross! Not posh manners but eating with family at home is a bit like eating on your own, no airs or graces needed! Specifically with sandwiches... you are eating food that you hold in your hands. Unless she's then touching your food / communal food with her licked fingers I don't see how you think this is unhygienic. What do you think is the issue, her hands or her mouth?

SirChenjins · 04/09/2024 15:52

Yeah, that's grim. I mean, picking up a few cake crumbs is one thing but scooping up remaining food or wiping your plate with your fingers is disgusting. I can only hope she washed her hands before she ate and washed them afterwards.

KreedKafer · 04/09/2024 15:55

So what? It's a sandwich. A sandwich is a meal you eat with your hands anyway. It's not like she's using her fingers to eat a plate of beef bourgignon.

Blanketpolicy · 04/09/2024 16:01

Think this is a you problem OP.

I had a relative that used to bring a toothpick out with them and pick their teeth after a meal while we were all still eating, either at home or in a restaurant. Now that is gross! We avoided eating with them whenever possible.

Picking up crumbs/escaped food on your own plate with a finger is pretty normal.

Come again?!?! 😲

KimKardashiansLostEarring · 04/09/2024 16:02

Come again?!?! 😲

She opened her yoghurt, ate a spoonful or 2, got chatting and used her spoon to scratch about at her vulva (over the trousers, but still..) then carry on eating her yoghurt with the same spoon.

My standards are fairly low in general, but that was too far even for me.

No it’s a you thing. It’s gross. I’d have to leave the table. Next time say something, even if it’s just a Why do you do that?

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 04/09/2024 16:20

If she was doing it in a restaurant then I'd see your point, but I can't imagine getting wound up about it in my home.

CointreauVersial · 04/09/2024 16:26

I'd do that at home, or if I was with family, without a second thought. I like my food and don't want to waste a drop!

I restrain myself in public, you'll be pleased to hear.

There's clearly more to it, though, as it isn't normal to get so worked up about such a minor thing. I get irritated by little things my mum does, if she overstays her welcome. It says more about me than her.

Q124 · 04/09/2024 16:27

That's disgusting. It'd make me feel ill.
