How many times a day do you fart?

Lighthearted but also serious in the sense that I cannot fathom the sheer amount of LOUD botty burps I do.
my mother says I’ve always been a gassy baby but I must fart at least 20 big loud ones a day with little normal ones inbetween.
they aren’t slippery light ones, I’m talking dense lean on cheek to rid my body of this evil ones.
Is there anyone else out there like me? I don’t have any diagnosed allergies and I’ve been checked for celiac/ gluten nothing came back abnormal.
I feel like a lava lamp right now, like my farts accumulate into giant wax bubbles and if I don’t force them out they will bubble into one giant one.
My apologies for being vulgar but genuinely is this normal?

depends on what ive been eating but around 1/2

FlowersOfSulphur · 04/09/2024 09:26

Too many times to count. It's definitely got worse with age. When I was in my 20s I had an elderly colleague who seemed to parp with every step she took, which we young 'uns found hilarious. Twenty five years, three vaginal deliveries and one menopause later, I find I'm rapidly moving towards a similar fart rate. I have to make a concerted effort to clench when I'm walking around at work!

I find that sugar makes the problem worse.

I used to a lot until I accidentally gave up gluten. I was trying a Mediterranean diet, so I reduced my bread and beer intake. Once I went back to something more normal for me, they came back! Gluten is now off the menu (after I had the tests for allergies vs IBS). I am searching for further trigger foods, and the next to go is most likely dried onion and garlic!

Same for me! I just to always be gassy and bloated... only taken me 50 years to work it out!! Clearly a bit slow on the uptake...😂

wolffkane6 · 04/09/2024 09:36

Sorry, laughed way too much reading these. Personally, it's got worse the older I've got along with my ability to control them. I'm 54 and they just burst out at the most inappropriate times these days...eg. While bending over in the shampoo aisle at boots...

hairbearbunches · 04/09/2024 09:40

Another one here in the menopause farting club 😁

It's normal to fart up to 20 times a day. I think the issue becomes more serious if they stink. I've noticed that as I entered menopause, the farts have become more impressive (DH is jealous!) but they don't smell. It's just air.

If you're farting a lot and are still wincing 10 minutes later at the whiff, probably needs some investigation. Likely cause is food your body doesn't really like.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 04/09/2024 10:03

Dairy does that to me. I'm lactose intolerant, I don't have the enzyme to digest lactose so my gut bacteria digest it instead. They're the ones who produce the gas, not me, it just leaves my body in a startling manner.

I mostly avoid dairy, but love a pavlova on my birthday. The family know they just have to put up with a couple of days of farts. Grin

Berlinlover · 04/09/2024 10:10

Never, I have an ileostomy.

tonybennscat · 04/09/2024 10:13

I’m ok so long as I avoid milk. Lactose free milk is fine. Other dairy products don’t seem to affect me.

UmCachorroVerde · 04/09/2024 10:24

Similar here. Became increasingly windy from my mid-40s onwards. My husband knows if I had sugar the day before because of the trumpet sounds from my side of the bed at the crack of dawn. Bread (gluten or wheat?) also seem to make it worse (rye bread seems ok).
I don't think I ever heard my mother fart, sadly my DC can't say the same!

TakeMyBreadAway · 04/09/2024 10:51

Since removing bread (hence my username), rice, pasta and potatoes from my diet I’ve not only almost completely stopped farting but lost over 40lbs too.

Seas164 · 04/09/2024 10:56

Depends on what I've eaten, but I steer clear of any food known for contributing to farts, or I could jet power myself to Paris for a day out. They are also olfactorily shocking. Very diet related for me.

Apples seem to cause this for me, I have stopped eating them.

Try peeling them as it's the skin that does it to me!

Cooking can help, too. I've a friend who's allergic to raw apples, but can tolerate cooked.

DataColour · 04/09/2024 11:51

A few times a day definitely. I notice I do more coming up to my period. I'm in my mid forties. Also after I eat.

KreedKafer · 04/09/2024 12:01

It really depends what I eat. Animal fat and carbs seem to make me fart a lot more - weirdly, I can happily eat a three-bean chilli and be fine, but would be parping away like a tuba quartet after a Sunday roast.

lolaran · 04/09/2024 12:24

used to a lot until I gave up dairy, now I rarely fart. Oh apart from when I eat roast beef which makes me fart tons.

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 04/09/2024 12:27

Maybe once.

Posting as I have a relative who is at it constantly if he eats dairy.

Since menopause started it's almost non stop! 😩

Yep - and do you find they sometimes sneak out... only not so much sneak as announce their arrival like a trumpet? Like when getting up off the sofa, for example?

ScottBakula · 04/09/2024 12:43

This thread has made me laugh ( and fart ) way more than it should of done !

I think we should all meet up at a open air venue and eat cabbage and lentil curry , cheese on toast and milkshakes and have a competition to see who can scare the most birds away.

We could get sponsorship from fabreeze 😆

Onceuponatime46 · 04/09/2024 12:45

I go on an evening walk most days, just to let rip….. I literally walk and parp for half an hour. Feels better afterwards though.

DilemmaDelilah · 04/09/2024 12:52

Never. At least never unless I'm already sitting on the loo. I have on going bowel issues following chemotherapy, and horrendous piles as well. I know that if I fart there will always be follow through. I don't seem ever to fart otherwise.

SidekickSylvia · 04/09/2024 13:01

I'm in my late 40's and I've noticed that my fart warning system is failing. I used to know when I was going to fart, and make adjustments (clench/ leave the room or area) but now, more often than not, it just takes me by surprise.

Sinisterdexter · 04/09/2024 13:08

Me too.
Definitely worse as I get older.

Dd is also a farter. I remember just after bonfire night she cracked such a loud fart the dog thought it was a firework and ran to the door barking loudly.

ApocalypseNowt · 04/09/2024 13:09

Exactly 7 a day.

If I haven't fulfilled my quota I have a big fart fest on the Saturday.
