Obviously lighthearted and no need to explain your rational. But what are things that some people consider high end/ posh/ classy/ aspirational (I know they are not necessarily the same thing) that you don’t like/ think are tacky/ common / etc.

Again this is light hearted. We can complain but we must never explain!!!!!!

Here is my list.

Molton Brown hand wash
M&S food shop
American Style Fridges
Having a tan
Talking about exercising
Beauty Advent Calendars
Designer toasters and kettles
House of Fraser department stores
Posting photos from 1st class travel on instagram
Referring to your car by its brand name
Talking about your ‘forever home’
Shopping in Space NK
Visiting Disney World
Listening to Classic FM

Using the word ‘common’

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 04/09/2024 08:20

Porsche/BMW/Mercedes 4x4 ditto range rovers. They’re not posh - but a sure sign you have more money than class.

What is a media wall?

Not one single person on earth thinks door bows are posh!

In the time you took to quote me and post that, you could have typed “Media Wall” into Google.

Many people who buy Door Bows think they’re “posh”.

ThatAgileLimeCat · 04/09/2024 08:28

Telegraph columnists
Colin Firth (but not Hugh Grant)
Moaning about your tenants
Posting about your tax return on social media
Cornwall
Playing the piano
Going to your club (golf,tennis)

I know nothing though...when I was a teenager I thought my boyfriend's mum was very well to do because she listened to The Archers and had a table in the kitchen 🤣

Victoria Beckham

I agree.

KingOfPoundbury · 04/09/2024 08:30

It has been pointed out by @Moveoverdarlin that my earlier post 'missed the point'.

Now the post has been scrutinized, and explained to me I agree that she is correct.
Consequently the Chamberlain who originally suggested the wording has now been dismissed.

Thank you.

If you're going to do this, you need to go all in like Nicky Haslam, who lists such things as 'loving your parents' and 'saying bye bye'.
https://nickyhaslamstudio.com/tea-towels

Oh this is amazing.

I shall inform my manager that I will no longer be accepting feedback, as Nick Haslam deems it common sweeps tea towel over shoulder like a pashmina

theDudesmummy · 04/09/2024 08:37

I will never forget how once, decades ago, me and my then husband were going through financial problems. We spoke to the bank about an overdraft or loan, can't remember which, and the bank manager actually came to our home to discuss (I don't imagine that happens these days!). We offered him some tea and when it was Earl Grey (H didn't drink tea and I love Earl Grey) he went "ooh, very fancy".

We didn't get the loan and had to borrow from family. I always wondered if it was the Earl Grey wot done it. (We changed bank after that. That bank was really stupid because were both junior doctors and obviously going to go on to become good earners, we were just in a spot of bother because acute family issues. If it was the Earl Gray then they were really stupid!).

Statement art.
Matching books you’ve never read.
Pre-aged oriental rugs.
Sets of mugs.
Expensive bedding.

Not knowing when the Arts and Crafts movement was

Not realising it was a style as well as a 'movement', and was in fact most popular in the 1930s, for individual houses as well as mass domestic architecture

Who are Miller and Carter?

Must be too posh for the likes of us who have never heard of it 😁

Mass domestic architecture 🤔

Clearly I am wrong then because I always thought the whole point of Arts and Crafts was the very opposite.

Wtf is wrong with classic FM?! It's my go to for keeping calm in bastard London traffic.

Actually posher folk listen to Radio 3.

True but there's nothing wrong with liking a toon! Radio 3 can sometimes be a bit highbrow in heavy traffic

BySparklyMoose · 04/09/2024 09:02

The Telegraph and the Daily Mail. Ah, I see you are of low intelligence.

Well I prefer Nyetimber but it costs £40 a bottle...

I thought it was a carvery type place. I had no idea it was meant to be posh!

Snobbery

Perfect answer

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 04/09/2024 09:06

Gloriiaa · 03/09/2024 20:09

The word posh, ' posh' people say smart

Cleaning your house or talking about cleaning or being even remotely concerned whether other people think their house is clean

Saying ' my' kitchen etc

New cars

' Snobbery ' is incidentally not something that ' posh' people concern themselves with, ironically a lot of 'posh' people were brought up with the etiquette to be polite/ engaging with whoever they come across, they are not obsessed with class, they are comfortable with who they are &;would find this thread to be in bad taste.

What's wrong with "my" kitchen?

It is my kitchen. In my house.

I'm definitely not posh. Grew up in a tiny working class village in the depths of NYorkshire with no money.

Still my kitchen.

aliceinanwonderland · 04/09/2024 09:06

Isn't the point re M&S that it's perceived to be posh but in fact is not.
Wealthy people would not buy an M&S Dine in for £12. They'd either have a cook or would get food delivered from a restaurant ( in Chelsea).

Utterknowitall · 04/09/2024 09:07

LouisCatorze · 04/09/2024 08:10

Anything that is a conspicuous show of having lots of money.

Especially when it's all bought on the never never

Macaroon (or “macaron”) biscuits.

Macaroons are delicious. Macarons are pointless.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/09/2024 09:08

A ‘statement’ anything.

Precocious children

Isn't Bear Grylls quite posh? His children are very precocious.

My friend's elder brother was at school with him. I would say Bear Grylls is an outlier. Aristos are very sneery about his being an evangelical Christian (and baptising Russell Brand was "a step too far") and for his being a "showman" rather than an a broadcaster.

Livinginaclock · 03/09/2024 20:01

Range Rovers.
Eating at Miller and Carter.
Holidaying in Dubai.

I don't think anyone thinks any of these are posh. They scream nouveau riche. I imagine they would appeal to the owner of a successful building contractors and his spray-tanned wife.
