Supposedly ’posh’ things you think are common *trigger warning this is light hearted*

Obviously lighthearted and no need to explain your rational. But what are things that some people consider high end/ posh/ classy/ aspirational (I know they are not necessarily the same thing) that you don’t like/ think are tacky/ common / etc.

Again this is light hearted. We can complain but we must never explain!!!!!!

Here is my list.

Molton Brown hand wash
M&S food shop
American Style Fridges
Having a tan
Talking about exercising
Beauty Advent Calendars
Designer toasters and kettles
House of Fraser department stores
Posting photos from 1st class travel on instagram
Referring to your car by its brand name
Talking about your ‘forever home’
Shopping in Space NK
Visiting Disney World
Listening to Classic FM

The British class system is deeply complex - and also extraordinarily simple. If you’re anxious about being perceived as terribly smart and bristling with status anxiety then there are a gazillion ways judge the people around you and find them somehow less or even worse more than you.

Being truly secure in your position because you either come from very smart old stock or interesting / new / international money generally means you can enjoy whatever combination of high and low brow activities you choose without fear of derision.

the exception to this might appear to be the formal protocol keeping of the royal family - but a) that’s only the public face and b) who is that to appease…

Oh, are we U people allowed to be openly cunty about non-U now (as long as we preface it with "lighthearted")?

Traditionally we've kept that kind of talk behind closed doors, but I suppose, now Starmer's in, the proles will be in no danger of rolling out the guillotines for a bit.

Being openly cunty about non-U people is definitely preferable to believing non-U people think Range Rover Evoques, holidays in Dubai and Ascot Ladies day are 'posh'.

God I love the irony of those saying Mumsnet 😂
Anyhow

barbour, Burberry, Hunter wellies, anything for horse riding when the person wearing them has never been near a stable
most things in Boden
everything in Joules

range rovers
baby showers, gender reveals and proms
door bows
giant plastic Halloween decorations in gardens
inflatable outdoor Christmas figures
grey velvet anywhere
mirrored furniture
flavored gin
bottomless brunches
flying (unless you are in the RAF) - it’s just rubbish and tacky and bad for the planet
Mrs finch and those plastic containers
coffee pod machines
air fryers
fake nails/fake hair/frozen Botox faces and bee sting over inflated lips
Dubai, together with anything with a “entrepreneur” culture or “crazy rich Asians” vibe
all tv reality programs especially love island
almost everything on daytime TV

basically anything that is over hyped and over marketed on insta. Wow, that was cathartic !!!!

Thistooshallpass24 · 03/09/2024 23:59

@Plantymcplantface do you mean Hinch not Finch?

Pickledprawn · 03/09/2024 23:59

I think the OP has bad teeth is too posh to wash and is sitting in her dirty old stately home with her shoes on, admiring her dusty antiques and books that she has read as she would NEVER watch the television as she is far too posh. But of course she would never admit that she thinks is she is posh as that would be common. Rather, she would prefer to poke fun at others who she believes are beneath her to demonstrate her high class and remarkable taste. (Lighthearted)!

Nothing mentioned is posh to me or am I weird?

Plantymcplantface · 04/09/2024 00:02

yes that’s the woman. Obsessed with zoflora or similar ?!

Thistooshallpass24 · 04/09/2024 00:03

@Plantymcplantface I believe so.
Not my cup of tea , but couldn't think who "finch" could be

Thanks OP for the thread! 😂 I haven’t laughed like this in a while!!! WTF??!? 😂

Yes, ha ha ha, these people are scum!

So cathartic to be able to point and laugh at the fuckers for a change, instead of putting on the old noblesse oblige.

Thanks @ReadingWorm!

LadyCelia · 04/09/2024 00:06

Buying a beautiful 1930s Arts and Crafts House. Living in it for a year, moaning that it's draughty and you can't afford to replace the windows. Then putting in PP to replace the said beautiful house with a MacMansion that's 50 shades of greige with extra room for your HP WankPanzers to park outside.

Completely common.

People describing their back garden as the garden. "I'm in the garden"

Huh? There is no other word for garden, unless you are in the US

I don't know anything about NH, but having just looked at her portfolio, her interiors strike me as pretty "supposedly posh/really common'. Quite try-hard. Is she trying to be ironic with the things she thinks are common business?

Possibly I am too common to get it clearly.

He is a chap

TediousTim · 04/09/2024 00:22

Cruises

Talking about people being "posh" or "common".

Posting photos of your Business or First Class tickets or seats.

Misprouncing things to make out that you are better and you know best compared to the plebs (who are actually pronouncing words correctly). I had a uni lecturer who said "rayshism" instead of racism in a very affected and pointed way. No one thinks you're special, speak normally.

Saying "we do xyz" or "we don't do xyz". Who is we? Just say "I" you're not speaking for the Dukedom. "We don't eat at McDonalds, We don't watch ITV". (I happen to know your husband watches This Morning and loves a McMuffin).

Referring to your house by its name instead of saying "my house" or "home". I know someone who used to say things like "We got back to Sunny Cottage at 3 o clock" instead of "We got home at 3 o clock". Or "Come round to Sunny Cottage for drinks". When you only have one home you don't need to use your house name in conversation Sarah.

Agreeing with@theduchessofspork
I'm in Canada and we say "front yard" or "back yard" as in the US. Gardens are flowers or fruit/veg here/US. @Brightredtulips might not know garden = yard for our UK cousins. 🩷

Well, laughter is the best medicine and, like you, I've found this thread such a tonic!

I mean, these people don't even realise how non-U they are. It's a scream!
