Supposedly ’posh’ things you think are common *trigger warning this is light hearted*

Obviously lighthearted and no need to explain your rational. But what are things that some people consider high end/ posh/ classy/ aspirational (I know they are not necessarily the same thing) that you don’t like/ think are tacky/ common / etc.

Again this is light hearted. We can complain but we must never explain!!!!!!

Here is my list.

Molton Brown hand wash
M&S food shop
American Style Fridges
Having a tan
Talking about exercising
Beauty Advent Calendars
Designer toasters and kettles
House of Fraser department stores
Posting photos from 1st class travel on instagram
Referring to your car by its brand name
Talking about your ‘forever home’
Shopping in Space NK
Visiting Disney World
Listening to Classic FM

It's a freezer to fryer joint with marketing.

I’ve never heard of it. Have just googled but where are they?!

LostittoBostik · 03/09/2024 23:33

"Referring to your car by its brand name
Talking about your ‘forever home’ "

These two made me ROFL 🤣
Thanks for cheering me up OP. 💯 no notes

Polo. Hitting animals is scuzzy behaviour.

Oysters. Don't eat things that are still alive. What are you - Hannibal Lector?

Tweed. You're not a Hebridean crofter and you look like a tit.

Red trousers - can only assume that the aforementioned inbreeding has caused some terrible genetic eye condition that prevents people from seeing how horrific these items look.

The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we?

Or the Wombles of Wimbledon, common are we?

I'll get me coat.

The Wombles scream "old money" to me.

Well...stage whisper "old money" to me.

Because screaming is vulgar...but if you look, the signs are all there. Every genuinely wealthy extremely elderly person I've ever met closely resembles a Womble, now that I think about it.

What's posh about that?

Prosecco can in fact be delicious.

Not that the delicious stuff is easy to find.

katepilar · 03/09/2024 23:37

Having just switched Classic FM on to sooth myself to sleep I agree with your list apart from that last item :)

@theduchessofspork but other people have pointed out more locations also so not sure how accurate it is ( I've never been to one)

Pippetypoppity · 03/09/2024 23:39

I hate this but actually truly ‘posh’ people would a) never use the word ‘posh’ b) not be at all concerned with how much money you have, what you drive or what you wear c) be more concerned about who ‘your people are’ aka ‘breeding’ over many generations and where you were educated. It’s as inflexible as that really. So much for true ‘social mobility’ !!

HauntedBungalow · 03/09/2024 23:41

Thinking you are superior because your money was made from slavery, land grabs and your great-great-grandfather codifying law to include the tax avoidance schemes that suited your family rather than eg plumbing, or singing songs, or playing football.

You get that from DeBretts? New money may be vulgar in your opinion, but frankly all folds same way.

CherryValley5 · 03/09/2024 22:05

I’d say yes - sorry..

Support independent bars!

My most local independent is a members-only ex-miners place. So I have to go to town if I fancy a drink! And, because I am common, I go to the Ivy and have a cocktail or four :D

I also wear Hunter wellies round the farm. Extra common!

Gloriiaa · 03/09/2024 20:09

The word posh, ' posh' people say smart

Cleaning your house or talking about cleaning or being even remotely concerned whether other people think their house is clean

Saying ' my' kitchen etc

New cars

' Snobbery ' is incidentally not something that ' posh' people concern themselves with, ironically a lot of 'posh' people were brought up with the etiquette to be polite/ engaging with whoever they come across, they are not obsessed with class, they are comfortable with who they are &;would find this thread to be in bad taste.

And indeed it is.

AInightingale · 03/09/2024 23:44

Spending a week making a loaf of bread and POSTING about it
The phrase 'my study'
'Cocktail hour'
Anyone being interviewed from home in front of their bookshelves

CherryVanillaPie · 03/09/2024 23:45

Money shouts, wealth whispers

The understated Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace

katepilar · 03/09/2024 23:45

I dont get why Classic FM would be considered either posh or tack. I dont knwo much about music but this radio brings me so much joy.

I disagree that those at the top of the tree don’t care about this stuff - they do, very much. They know that if we stop worrying about what is and isn’t, we’re much more likely to start thinking and talking about what an outrageously unequal and deeply unfair world our children are still being born into.
