Supposedly ’posh’ things you think are common *trigger warning this is light hearted*

Obviously lighthearted and no need to explain your rational. But what are things that some people consider high end/ posh/ classy/ aspirational (I know they are not necessarily the same thing) that you don’t like/ think are tacky/ common / etc.

Again this is light hearted. We can complain but we must never explain!!!!!!

Here is my list.

Molton Brown hand wash
M&S food shop
American Style Fridges
Having a tan

Beauty Advent Calendars
Designer toasters and kettles
House of Fraser department stores

Serviette, settee, toilet and trifle😱

What’s wrong with trifle? Is it the word or the food itself?

I can't afford any foreign holiday, but anything Disney is naff AF. We aren't talking about things being simply expensive.

Sorry, was trying to respond to person you quoted.

@SanctusInDistress

You can get amazing fruit but you need to know where. Asian supermarkets have the most delicious mangos in season, different to the variety in the supermarket. You also need to ripen most fruit at home

Those big baggy coats that are in fashion and people wear them to watch their children play in football matches , think they’re called dry ??? Look ridiculous!

Dry robes….but surely no one ever has called them posh…..I see them mainly used on film sets , worn by the actors between takes, on SM posts

A trifle is a trifle…what other word would you use?

Driving a Mercedes. Calling your child Iona Mercedes.

No longer a Mercedes owner but by far the smoothest car I have ever driven, it was like silk! The quality would sell one to me again.

Well I've eaten dragon fruit in several Asian countries, it's always included in the fruit salad in hotel breakfasts and I'm still not buying it. Tasteless and pointless.

This thread is just a list of things people don't like- bulked out by vacuous nonsense.

And by vacuous nonsense I am referring to statements like

That’s because it’s impossible to get decent fruit in the UK. If you tried one from outside the UK you’d understand. I had one in Spain not long ago that I still salivate over.

I completely agree with you re dragon fruit. And if we are descending in sweeping generalisations , I've had very pretty, but completely tasteless fruit salads in Asian countries.

Can we have an opposing thread for things we thought were dead fancy but weren't.

When I was a kid I thought Vienetta was the absolute height of sophistication 😁

Me too!

I used to gather all my pennies together to buy a lemon Vienetta. I used to think I was king shit eating the entire thing out of the ripped box with a big spoon.

@ReadingWorm why do you keep putting a winking face after all your gratuitous replies? Stinks of thinking of yourself to be so very much better than everyone else.

I do 5, and like an additional 5 off your list. I don’t aspire to be posh, or common, I just like them.

The clothing part sounds quite OCD if I’m perfectly honest..

Why?
I am simply not fond of putting underware or clothes that touch my private parts in a direct contact with road dirt.

Would you wear underware that was dropped on a street? No.
Same way I would not wear things that were dropped on a surface where shoes dirty from the streets walked.
Yes it is my home floor but all the spit, shit and grime you went through are now distributed here. So the same principle applies.

If you're going to do this, you need to go all in like Nicky Haslam, who lists such things as 'loving your parents' and 'saying bye bye'.

People thinking this post is 'bad taste'! Anything designer , well, mainly clothes that have the brand logo on..

Gloriiaa · 03/09/2024 22:34

More than one exclamation mark, although that might just be annoying

10 year old me who only had family holidays in caravans on the East Coast, definitely thought Disney World was a posh holiday.

In fact, there will still be some 10 year old kids out there like I was, holidaying in caravans, wondering what it’s like to go abroad and thinking all the kids who have Sky TV are the height of the ‘posh’.

This thread is so wrong. Let’s all laugh at the povvos, but claim it’s okay cause it’s only lighthearted and we grew up “working class” too 🙄

I was referring to giant canvas photos.

The key difference is that your home is not a street covered in unknown amounts of dirt, vomit or piss. There may be negligible particles from shoes but that’s what door mats, regular cleaning and immune systems are for. Your thought process is very over the top.

Just googled miller and carter locations….this is why only us northerners have heard of them🤣🤣

I think you've googled 'miller & carter near me' as I know at least 3 that aren't on your map .

I don't know anything about NH, but having just looked at her portfolio, her interiors strike me as pretty "supposedly posh/really common'. Quite try-hard. Is she trying to be ironic with the things she thinks are common business?

Possibly I am too common to get it clearly.

PedantScorner · 03/09/2024 22:37

@TheyreStillGoingWithThemPlumsKerr , dinner is at about 1 pm, supper is a light evening meal. If you eat your main meal in the early afternoon, it's not affectation.

@TempestTost , Nicky Haslam is a man.

Abandon thread!

The lighthearted trigger warning has been ignored.

I repeat - Abandon thread!

But I wanted to add mine 🥺
Range Rovers - multiply by 10 if white.
Flannels shopping bags on shelves.
Hot tubs.
Outdoor fairy lights.

Those threads always end up with vienetta ferrero rocher. I for one am very grateful that they're now only for the super rich like I thought as a kid 😋
