Supposedly ’posh’ things you think are common *trigger warning this is light hearted*

Obviously lighthearted and no need to explain your rational. But what are things that some people consider high end/ posh/ classy/ aspirational (I know they are not necessarily the same thing) that you don’t like/ think are tacky/ common / etc.

Again this is light hearted. We can complain but we must never explain!!!!!!

Here is my list.

Molton Brown hand wash
M&S food shop
American Style Fridges
Having a tan
Talking about exercising
Beauty Advent Calendars
Designer toasters and kettles
House of Fraser department stores
Posting photos from 1st class travel on instagram
Referring to your car by its brand name
Talking about your ‘forever home’
Shopping in Space NK
Visiting Disney World
Listening to Classic FM

Things that are popular that I consider beneath me.

100% this.

LadyGabriella · 03/09/2024 22:23

Chandeliers. Aspirational but mostly end up looking tacky af.

People describing their back garden as the garden. "I'm in the garden"

Isn’t that because most people don’t sit in their front gardens?

SanctusInDistress · 03/09/2024 22:08

That’s because it’s impossible to get decent fruit in the UK. If you tried one from outside the UK you’d understand. I had one in Spain not long ago that I still salivate over.

Have you had ripe mangoes flown in the same day (for Eid) and untouched by supermarket staff?

angstypant · 03/09/2024 22:23

BunnyLake · 03/09/2024 20:29

What’s wrong with American fridge/freezers?

Nothing. Nor sushi. There is nothing remotely common about half oft this stuff. It's just stuff. Not posh. Not common. It's like saying 'apples' or 'cheddar'. They are just standard things

I have an outside TV - I get into my outdoor pool, lie on my outdoor lilo and watch Wimbledon (for example) on my outside TV. It is bloody brilliant and I wouldn't swap my life for a bunch of people sneering at me!

Where do you live @m00rfarm ?

I live in the Algarve. Definitely not posh, but would not change it for the world.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 03/09/2024 22:24

@SanctusInDistress

You take a photo of it and look at it whenever you need to (about twice since I started driving 20 years ago)

Have you never had to sign in anywhere or use a car park ticketing machine where you have to put your car reg in?

Wine

Wine is seen as posh? Are you posting from 1975?

But at the same time, how is it "tacky" or "common"? It's neither posh nor tacky. Or it's either, depending very much on the wine.

LifeofBrienne · 03/09/2024 22:25

SanctusInDistress · 03/09/2024 22:02

Camping in Cornwall or Devon (you know the ones I mean)
saying that you’re ’going out’
private schools (if you know, you know)
Safari (unless you are friends with the owner and you are a non-paying guest)
telling people you’re flying first
getting up at 7am to go for a run/cycle
leasing a car
Flying lessons (unless it’s your career)
helicopter tours
cruises
trying to be ‘alpha’ (we can see through it)
gym-modelled inverted triangle men (lots of upper body weight, thin legs)
fake eyelashes, plumped lips
polyester clothes
place mats
big tvs

The game I like to play on these threads is to find the weirdest thing that a MNer has class-identified as posh / not posh.

’Getting up at 7 to go for a run’ wins this time. 🏆

Is it that posh people get up earlier for their runs? Or run after work? Or is running for exercise just plebeian full stop?

mitogoshi · 03/09/2024 22:25

Truly posh people don't care about what you think so wear/do/holiday/eat whatever they like.

We fall into the demographic but we shop at Lidl (close) and do whatever we fancy, certainly wouldn't go to Dubai et al on human rights grounds for starters. Oh and classic fm, no - Radio 3 is far better Grin though currently I've got The Last Dinner Party on in my car

ManyATrueWord · 03/09/2024 22:25

High tea. High tea is a two course meal with a meat and a sweet course. Afternoon tea is the sandwiches and cake indulgence.

angstypant · 03/09/2024 22:25

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 03/09/2024 20:40

Aren't these all just nouveau riche things?

Most of them are just 'things'. No idea why people seem to attribute any class to half the stuff mentioned.

Salcombe
Julian Barnes novels
Wine
Radio 4
Organic food

Edited

I’m in Salcombe listening to Radio 4, drinking wine. I’m guessing the lobster at The King’s Head was organic but am definitely not posh.

However, someone should tell the chefs and cafe owners in Salcombe that putting peashoots on every dish does not make it posh or elevate the dining experience. Other leaves and garnishes are available.

whowantspopcorn · 03/09/2024 22:26

Until I joined mumsnet I had NO idea that some people consider the word ‘toilet’ rude and don’t let their children say it 😂 Maybe I’m just gross and common.

HangingOver · 03/09/2024 22:26

Can we have an opposing thread for things we thought were dead fancy but weren't.

When I was a kid I thought Vienetta was the absolute height of sophistication 😁

Owl55 · 03/09/2024 22:27

Those big baggy coats that are in fashion and people wear them to watch their children play in football matches , think they’re called dry ??? Look ridiculous!

Benvolio · 03/09/2024 22:27

Beezknees · 03/09/2024 22:09

Oh it's not that serious. I'm a "povvo" as you call it (had to look that word up) I'm not offended!

I can't afford any foreign holiday, but anything Disney is naff AF. We aren't talking about things being simply expensive.

Says the person calling an entire (very normal and affordable) car brand plus all EVs nouveau riche.. Would horse and cart be more your thing?

I used to want some but now every Z list/ influencer wears them.

Saying ‘ I don’t knows what miller and carter is’

😂

TheyreStillGoingWithThemPlumsKerr · 03/09/2024 22:28

Calling dinner ‘supper’.

I say say ‘loo’ instead of ‘toilet’ and I’m practically on first name terms with staff at my local Miller and Carter, so I’m bona fide posh
