Supposedly ’posh’ things you think are common *trigger warning this is light hearted*

Obviously lighthearted and no need to explain your rational. But what are things that some people consider high end/ posh/ classy/ aspirational (I know they are not necessarily the same thing) that you don’t like/ think are tacky/ common / etc.

Again this is light hearted. We can complain but we must never explain!!!!!!

Here is my list.

Molton Brown hand wash
M&S food shop
American Style Fridges
Having a tan
Talking about exercising
Beauty Advent Calendars
Designer toasters and kettles
House of Fraser department stores
Posting photos from 1st class travel on instagram
Referring to your car by its brand name
Talking about your ‘forever home’
Shopping in Space NK
Visiting Disney World
Listening to Classic FM

These aren’t posh things though are they? They are ‘aspirational’ or ‘luxury’ brands and things that have been listed. Like a Louis Vuitton bag. Not posh, just aspirational for some people. And good on them. Around here people fall over themselves to boast about their Farrow and Ball paint and designer wallpaper. Seems a bit unnecessary to me, but horses for courses.

People describing their back garden as the garden. "I'm in the garden"

I say that but I’m not trying to be posh. It just wouldn’t occur to me to word it any differently. I wouldn’t need to say my garden because most people would assume I was talking about my garden and not a random one.

But I only have 1 garden and therefore it is the garden! No point in describing it as back when there is no front one

Posh. I do not think that word means what you think it means.

It is derived from the ships that carried passengers out to the east - the cooler side was on the port side and starboard on the return journey. Post Outward Starboard Home

You are all quite, quite magnificently bonkers. Why does anyone need to pretend they are better than ....x? We are just very ordinarily ordinary.

Careful, I think admitting to be ordinary in this context is against talk guidelines.

Who are Miller and Carter?

i live in rural NW and even we have x 2 miller and carters on our doorstep..l..don’t know anyone who would consider them posh

on the other hand I don’t mind the Ivy….I take my Mum age 88 to the one in York….she loves it….it’s a nice menu….,and it’s really not that expensive….and the staff are lovely..,,they gave her a complimentary big fat profiterole with a sparkler in when it was her birthday ….there are far far more expensive restaurants ….even ‘up north’

Dressage
Wafting around the garden in a nightie
Chickens in the kitchen
Hiding the TV in a cupboard to pretend it doesn't exist
Too many dogs
Whippets
Ballet pumps
Antiques
Children with messy hair

Thistooshallpass24 · 03/09/2024 21:22

Those bath pearls were lethal, it was the slippiest substance on earth!

lemonadesalt · 03/09/2024 21:22

Nobody thinks personalised number plates are posh. Quite the opposite

Two for £28 in my local outlet.

That’s probably only a little more than I paid. The £12 lip balms were £3.

People describing their back garden as the garden. "I'm in the garden"

So what does a proper posh person say then?

NoBodyIdRatherBe · 03/09/2024 21:23

New cars
Obvious designer clothes or bags
Panelling
Outdoor expensive pizza ovens

Confused re trifle. What is it then?????
And it's really nice, imho, common or whatever!

Flatulence · 03/09/2024 21:25

New cars.
New furniture.
Mark Warner holidays.
Private day schools for over 13s (one can just about get away with it in London or if the school is truly very, very old but otherwise the smart people board or use a state school).
Matching anything (crockery, clothes, kitchenware etc.).
Anything obviously designer (i.e. with a clearly visible logo).
Any 'designer' or -doodle type dog. The smart people have either a labrador/spaniel/JRT etc. or a random x-breed/mongrel.
Saying 'pardon'.
Being obsessed with cleanliness/tidiness.
Weddings with a designated colour scheme.
Black tie at weddings.
A horse-drawn hearse.
First class flights (business class or economy is fine).
Not swearing.
Large TVs

Xyz1234567 · 03/09/2024 21:25

This is crazy stuff! Who in the world thinks trifle, John Craven and park runs are posh?
If you're in your back garden and someone asks you where you are, what would you possibly say other than, I'm in the back garden'??!!!

Yeah but aren't they quite fun? I just looked up [my initials] 1 and it's 100k which is approx 7x the value of the car it would adorn but I cant say I'm not tempted.

DestroyEverythingYouTouch · 03/09/2024 21:26

Oh, I remembered another one I was told - using the term living room. It should be sitting room with a separate drawing room. Living room implies you have one room to serve both functions. Very gauche, apparently.

Somebody with the ability to buy a dressage horse, hire a dressage instructor and compete in the discipline, amongst having to buy specialist saddles etc is most definitely posh..

mine is because I could never remember my reg number.

You take a photo of it and look at it whenever you need to (about twice since I started driving 20 years ago)
