How to break light up school shoes...

Blessedbethefruitz · 03/09/2024 18:35

My son's new school shoes arrived today. I've never seen light up ones without a button... Has anyone ever destroyed the light up function perhaps in the washing machine? They're Asda if that helps. We're non drivers so delivery only, no Asda in reasonable travel distance, and no free returns!

He has pronounced them 'awesome' but I'm fairly sure glowing flames is going to be a problem for school.

Yes, cheap shoes - he's going into year 1 and last year grew 4 sizes and destroyed the m&s ones in 1 month.

And yes, I've learned a valuable lesson ;)

Sad 😢 he’s only little. Can’t he keep them for home?

Noncompete · 03/09/2024 18:37

Are they the Marvel ones? They say that they have the button press.

Littletreefrog · 03/09/2024 18:37

Have school actually said they are not allowed? They are only little once I would wait until school say anything (they might not) and if they do just sharpie over the lights. And I say that as a strict rule follower normally.

MammaGisAF · 03/09/2024 18:39

Yeah which ones are they? Asda put the button in funny places (like at the end of the Velcro)

edwinbear · 03/09/2024 18:59

OP - you cannot take glowing flame shoes off a little boy!!! I’d just send him in with them and feign complete ignorance if anyone mentions it. They’ll probably break in a couple of weeks once he’s jumped in a few puddles/kicked a football round the playground. They sound awesome!

MargaretThursday · 03/09/2024 20:51

Tell school you didn't realise they had lights on and apologise.
Say you can't get more new shoes for him currently, but will do when you can.
It'll be old news next week and no one will bother.

Ds wore trainers all year in year 11 by that method.

ZeroFucksGivenToday · 03/09/2024 20:52

Awwww leave him with his awesome shoes and wait for school to say something.

Blessedbethefruitz · 03/09/2024 22:18

Oh I'm surprised by these responses! They're the ones attached, they're pretty cool actually! They light up like a Mexican wave, front to back, and then flash. They are not subtle!

He had light ups last year at one point but they had a button on so he could turn them off once he arrived at school.

I haven't checked with school, though they last year downgraded from school shoes and plimsolls for pe to black trainers for all. He's a very nervous child, I would hate for him to be told off, he'd take it so to heart. I could ask tomorrow, his old shoes still fit anyway miraculously.

@Littletreefrog You think sharpie would work?

Absolutely this. He's only little! What does it matter. Feign ignorance with the school, only if it's mentioned!

Toddlerteaplease · 03/09/2024 22:43

Just seen the pics. If only they did those in Laur size. I love them!

Hmm maybe Sharpie won't work. Can he wear his other ones that still fit to school and keep these for home or for school once you've found out of they are bothered or not.

MyMagicStars · 03/09/2024 22:49

DD4 is sat next to me and is a teacher- she says she’s never had a problem with light up shoes (and she’s very strict!)!

Wear the old ones for now if they fit. New ones for home. Give it a couple of weeks and then he can wear them to school. Schools tend to only be hot on uniform for a couple of weeks and again at the start of each term when resetting behaviour and then they move on to something else.

MammaGisAF · 04/09/2024 06:51

Have you tried the end of the Velcro here where the pattern is? Sometimes that is the button. Try pressing it when the lights are flashing.

Blessedbethefruitz · 04/09/2024 07:19

@MammaGisAF Yes that's nothing, just some embossed leather. Prying the insole out would be tricky as it appears to be glued down too.

It is weird that there are so many light up ones amongst the school shoes if it is a problem. Maybe I'm wrong and it's not?

OP posts:
yoshiblue · 04/09/2024 07:23

I don't think they're appropriate for school if they a flashing flames front to back 😂

You need to return or keep for home and buy a second plain pair for school.

Lovelysummerdays · 04/09/2024 07:26

I wouldn’t worry about it. It’ll be winter before we know it and those lights will be fab identifier when it’s getting dark. Lights on shoes are getting very bright. I bought Dd some sketchers and they have five super bright leds in the sides rather than the soles.

QuillBill · 04/09/2024 07:27

I think when light up shows became a thing twenty years ago they were a distraction and frowned upon for a school shoe. Now, a flaming light -up Mexico wave shoe is barely noticeable.

How much do they flash when he's sitting down with his legs crossed?

Blessedbethefruitz · 04/09/2024 07:29

@QuillBill Only when they stomp in them. He is very well behaved (at school anyway...) so wouldn't be stomping in class time.

Namechangeforthis88 · 04/09/2024 07:31

And what size do these shoes go up to? My friend would like to know.

QuillBill · 04/09/2024 07:33

They are fine then! I teach year two, if they were Mexican waving on the carpet I might not be thrilled but otherwise I would not notice them.

Maybe don't stomp when you are passing the headteacher. 🔥

ReadingInTheRain583 · 04/09/2024 07:40

I think our school would ask for them to be changed, but they're also realistic, aware there's a cost of living crisis (over 70% of our school get pupil premium, its a pretty deprived area), and wouldn't necessarily expect them to be replaced immediately. If they were causing problems (distraction etc) they may suggest going in in PE trainers/daps until replaced but the latter aren't ideal now the weather is turning.

My son is feral, wears his light up sketchers in all sorts of places - the sea, the local lake, streams etc. They've been through the washing machine weekly at some points. Still flashing as bright as the day we got them!!

Hope he has a great day at school 🔥

Weeteeny · 04/09/2024 07:58

I miss the light up shoes ! My 2 dc are 17 and 19 now and I had completely forgotten the joy of light up shoes !

Dolallytats · 04/09/2024 09:31

Noooooo!! He needs to keep his light up shoes. They're fab and he's only year 1, it'll be fine.
I would definitely have bought my son these when he was little😁
