How do you pay with your phone?

Carwashcath · 03/09/2024 17:50

I see loads of people tapping their phone like I tap and pay with a debit/credit card. How do I set this up? I have an android phone and bank with HSBC if relevant.

Find the Google wallet app then add your card to the app.
FWIW I don't have my main bank account on my phone, but a secondary 'spending' account that doesn't have too much in it (probably unjustifiably paranoid)

MinnieCauldwell · 03/09/2024 18:07

You can load most of your store loyalty cards into the wallet also, saves carrying a losd of cards around.

MinnieCauldwell · 03/09/2024 18:09

Be aware that every so often you have to use your actual card and put it into the csrc reader.

Carwashcath · 03/09/2024 18:14

Thanks all. Do I then just open the app at the till and tap the card reader to pay? God I sound so behind the times!

I use apple pay and my phone for most transactions i’ve never been asked put a card in.

You do sometimes for an actual card contactless payment if you have made lots of transactions, can’t remember the time frame

You’ll need to either have a pin code, finger print or use face id to actually use the card as you tap.

murasaki · 03/09/2024 18:22

But yes,i have android and HSBC too. Open app at till, I use a pin and have 45 seconds to tap so ages. It's really easy to setup, the app walks you through it, mine is samsung wallet.

Open the app, input pin/fingerprint/Face ID (sorry, have an iPhone so not sure which one!) and tap to the machine as you would a card. It’s v simple and v handy 😁

Westfacing · 03/09/2024 18:25

Mine is by fingerprint - occasionally the PIN is requested

RichardMarxisinnocent · 03/09/2024 18:29

On android, if you have Google wallet, rather than Samsung wallet, you don't need to open the app (unless you want to use a card other than your default one), just unlock your phone and tap the machine.

That’s definitely not the case with Apple Pay, though I suppose might be for google?

Great. Thanks

If you are in London, with Apple Pay you can set a 'travel card' and you just tap it on bus / tube / train reader and it does it automatically.

No need to click to bring the cards up.

TeenLifeMum · 03/09/2024 19:10

Things like gig tickets and train tickets can also go in the wallet too. Very handy.

The vendor sometimes has a limit which means you need to use the card. If you tried to use contactless to buy, say, 500 quids worth of clothes from an independent shop, it would probably ask for the card.

That'd probably be the same for using the contactless card itself though too, you'd still need to put the card in the reader and use the pin.

If there’s a limit, I’ve yet to find it :)

We bought my late husbands MINI using a debit card set up on Apple Pay, just to see if we could. And it worked. For £30k!

Though I don’t often spend more than £1k in a shop, I’ve never been asked for the card. Which is good, as I generally don’t carry them! So it’s worth knowing there might be a limit in some places. Thanks!

OnTheBoardwalk · 03/09/2024 19:23

Most stores have a limit of £100 for contactless cards, like Tesco etc, but they are limitless for phone payments. I've spent thousands at a time, on special occasions, in one transaction on my phone. You also don’t need to have a signal it works off line

In what, 3 years, I've never had to use my card and pin when using my Apple wallet.

and yes have other people have said, it’s great to have store cards, concert and travel tickets all in my wallet

I think that's sensible

DoneAdulting · 03/09/2024 19:26

There is no limit on Apple Pay.

amoreoamicizia · 03/09/2024 19:27

Not having a limit is a negative for me in terms of security, thanks though as I didn't realise this as I've never thought to try it. I use the same setup as HuaShan, a separate account with a limited amount, but everyone I know finds this ridiculous so I just stopped telling people 😅

FinallyYouSaid · 03/09/2024 19:29

I've never been asked to do this.

Also I can't relate to anyone saying they have to enter a pin/use a fingerprint or face ID.

I just unlock my phone and tap, that's it. Don't even have to open the wallet app.

OnTheBoardwalk · 03/09/2024 19:29

I think that’s fair enough @HuaShan and @amoreoamicizia it is easy to tap and not think about it

You’ll need to either have a pin code, finger print or use face id to actually use the card as you tap.

I use clicking to enable and both face and code to authorise mine ….. and with multiple cards in my Apple wallet my default card usually doesn’t have much money, so in addition I need to choose an active card to pay!!

I’m not that security paranoid, it’s because I take card payments using a card reader run by an app on my phone - and more than once my phone has tried to pay - with me looking at my phone so facial recognition wants to authorise

This begins to annoy me after a while, like this evening, but I’m going to be taking payments this weekend so if I turn it back to a sensible level I’ll forget and it will try to pay when I’m charging people

Other than that it’s convenient, but I’ll use a card to pay generally enabling me to choose what account and use Apple wallet to pay for things on apps. Or if I don’t want to carry cards I can use just my phone

As you are on android you will need to set up Google pay

https://pay.google.com/intl/en_uk/about/

Set up your chosen card, and choose security confirmation methods that suit you

Remember that with contactless your bank is accepting a level of risk, eg if you lose your card and contactless payments are accepted you have some protection
This is why there are the limits, and that it randomly asks for your PIN - especially if their system decides your spend pattern is unusual

But with phone payments you have initially authorised the phone and should have set security options such as facial recognition, fingerprint, PIN, therefore the bank puts some onus back on you - which is why the tramsaction limits are higher

Google Pay – seamlessly pay online, pay in shops or send money

Google Pay is a quick, easy and secure way to pay online, in shops or send money to friends and family. Pay the Google way.
