How do I stop waking up in the early hours?

I keep waking up at 4am, its really annoying, sometimes I get another hour or so, sometimes I just toss and turn. Its been weeks if not months. I'm not particularly stressed I don't think.

What do I do? :(

@LivingDeadGirlUK It's basically magnesium in a soluble form which you can add to bath water. Supposed to be good for muscle aches and relaxing, although not sure how much it can really be absorbed through the skin 🤔

So after night 3 of my new Loop Ear Plugs I'm yet to be impressed for the cost ... Confused

I'm begin to wonder if I've either got different shaped ears to most people or if I'm just completely cack handed at putting ear plugs in because despite changing the tips on both sides they either hurt half way through the night or aren't quite a snug enough for to muffle the sounds of DH snoring. Actually any noise at all. I don't think I've tried a single pair of the bloody things I can get on with.

Very disheartened as I had very high hopes but looks like I'm sending them back.

Annoyingly I've gone from sleeping 11ish to waking at 3/4 and dozing/getting back to sleep the odd night - which was tiring but bearable- to DH snoring now from the minute he drops off through most of the night. At one point last night I actually wanted to punch him in the face. Hard. This is not good.

So I think this is now becoming less a Me and Peri problem - for which there as several ideas on this thread I intend to try out soon - to DH and His Snoring problem. I need to talk to him about what he needs to do now. Unfortunately we have no spare room Confused although my parents are currently on holiday and the temptation to fuck off and sleep in their flat is huge ...

So I'll hopefully come back to you lot when DH proposes some ideas.

I've got loop earplugs, they are great for consentrating in noisy environments but my partners snooring goes straight through them.

I bought some loop earplugs but can only have one in at a time, the ear that's on the pillow can't have one in or they hurt like hell and that's with the smallest setting on.

They did however help me sleep in hospital when the man on the other side of the hall was snoring like a train.

Not worth the money. Great marketing.

I was doing the same thing until recently, it took me more than 6 months to be able to sleep with loops in both ears. But they are really the best ones I ever had.

So you get used to the pressure pain you get in your ear?

Gosh try sleeping in your own room

I have no idea what happened but there's no pressure pain anymore. Either my ears or earplugs reshaped maybe 😁
My husband is also very pleased with loop. He used to buy silicone earplugs made personally for him for like £200 but doesn't need it anymore.

Oh no !
I won't buy them so as they'd be no good silencing DH's snores. They almost wake the dead. Smile

With the colder night I slept with the window closed and got a better sleep. Still tossing and turning in the early hours. I was focusing on a work thing which was annoying but at least I didn't wake up properly.

Magnesium isn't upsetting my stomach yet which is good!

has a revelation- started Keto this week and I’m sleeping like a baby….an easy baby who actually sleeps - this might work?

I don't want to be waking every 2 hours screaming :D

Thats interesting, I am not doing Keto but I have been cutting out sugar and carbs to try and manage prediabetics, but I've been a bit lax over the summer holidays.

I've had a bit of a plot twist, had bloods done and my LH hormone is incredibly low, not really sure what this means! but seems to be the opposite to what you would expect if you are in menopause. I'm down to have it tested again in 6 weeks.

I just wanted to thank everyone on this thread, my sleep is still quite disturbed but I am managing to stay in bed and do feel more rested that I did before, I am functioning at work again which is a real weight off my mind tbh.

Urgh I had to get up for a wee and its left me wide awake.

Sorry you woke early OP!

I've been experimenting with the suggestions in the thread. I've upped my magnesium to 2 at night, then 1 when I wake up too early. It seems an awful lot of magnesium, they are already high strength.

I've also been doing 5HTP at night, but you are not supposed to take that long term.

The colder nights have been helping.

Got 7 hours last night (9.30pm - 4.30am) which is good (though would always prefer more).

Groovee · 16/09/2024 09:45

My sleep has been horrendous for years. Recently I started on melatonin from the sleep clinic and it made matters worse. Every hour, full of anxiety. Took myself off it.

Reflexology seems to be working well for me.

deeahgwitch · 16/09/2024 09:51

I took 3 magnesium glycinate last night. I thought I'd never fall asleep.
And I woke early.
I am fed up with this getting to sleep thingSad

Frankbutchersfangs · 16/09/2024 13:39

It's getting so bad for me now, that I am considering going back on to Amitriptyline as that was the only thing that seemed to work.

deeahgwitch · 16/09/2024 20:31

Amitryptyline didn't work for me. Sad

Sorry to hear that. What dosage were you on? I have heard over 50 mg has the opposite effect

LivingDeadGirlUK · 18/09/2024 04:35

I had been doing ok but had a couple of drinks out yesterday which almost garunteed a 4am wake up today@AceofPentacles lol. Plus my other half is snoring like a walrus next to me.

I had my bloods done and one of the hormones was very low which can be a stress indicator, on reflection I think I am quite stressed its just become my baseline now so I didn't clock it before.

Yeah, drink is lethal for me sleep-wise; as a consequence, I have become quite a bore and only have one or two drinks when I go out. Which hormone was low?

Beesandhoney123 · 18/09/2024 07:40

Your body temperature drops around this time, and you are most likely cold. The outdoor temperature does too. Bedsocks help. Also no booze.
Think it's something to do with natural blood pressure too, but may be way off.

Tell yourself you might as well get up and clean the kitchen floor. You might nod off.

Barney16 · 18/09/2024 08:21

I have this in phases. On HRT which did the trick in the beginning but not any more. Keep thinking that when I get time will get hormone levels checked again because I suspect it's that. I do get up, get a drink then listen to a podcast which always makes me fall asleep. But broken sleep is horrible and I always wake up the next morning feeling rubbish. I always wake up at 4am if I'm going to wake up too. Must be something about 4am...

It was LH hormone.
