How do I stop waking up in the early hours?

I keep waking up at 4am, its really annoying, sometimes I get another hour or so, sometimes I just toss and turn. Its been weeks if not months. I'm not particularly stressed I don't think.

What do I do? :(

I had similar issues and it turned out after blood test that I had a vitamin D deficiency ( dangerously low levels). I was advised by private GP to take Omega 3 high dose with breakfast and high doses of Vit D +K straight after. It literally changed my life. I'm sleeping like baby now after a month of the above vitamins combination, my low level depression kind of disappeared, my skin is better. Blood test showed that my vit D levels after one month have massive improved. Basically, check your vit D levels. I didn't even know this affects your sleep, muscles and mood.

I've been sleeping 10am - 4.30am all this week. 6.5 hours, so functioning but tired and irritable. Better than past years (closer to menopause) of just 5 hours sleep.

I tried to cheat the system last night and went to bed at 9am. With the result of waking at 3.30am.

I'm already on HRT, have taken magnesium for years etc. Am mildly stressed and it's enough to wreck my sleep, I don't know how I would cope with proper stress. I'll try PP's suggestion of taking some magnesium on waking.

I appreciate everyone needs different amounts of sleep but 6.5 hours every night sounds like a dream to me haha

I sincerely hope you have the same tonight!

I did! Hoping for a run of three tonight. I’d say it’s worth a try as it’s reasonably inexpensive, less than £10 for two months supply. If it doesn’t work for you it’s the price of a couple of coffees

Tried the magnesium on waking last night, I did get back to sleep. Not quite a true test though as a storm woke me up at the 4 hour mark.

Shall try it again tonight!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 08/09/2024 06:54

I slept from 11pm to 6am which feels pretty good! tbh a consistent 7 hours would be perfect lets hope it continues.

There's also liquid "ionic" magnesium on amazon, as well as magnesium powder, they should absorb and start acting faster then tablets, but I'm not sure about the taste.

I wonder if I lose extra weight I will stop waking up to pee at 5. Never had to wake up when I was 3 stones lighter.

I've had a lot of tests including vit D recently and they are unexpectedly normal.

I'm also overweight and think I just slept more comfortably in general when lighter. I do think I need a new mattress as well though.

Woke with a nightmare in the early hours but kept my eyes closer and dosed on and off till my alarm. Partners snoring was annoying.

The 11pm bedtime seems to be working well for me.

I hope that’s a typo and it’s 10pm. Or are you a shift worker and those are your sleeping hours??

LivingDeadGirlUK · 09/09/2024 08:14

10am to 4:30pm would be a lovely nap!

well, Livingdead, third night of magnesium glcwotsit and I did wake up. Usually I wake at 4.30am but this was a 2am, wee, went back to sleep. I’d suggest trying it.

SydneyCarton · 09/09/2024 10:20

I've been trying the suggestion of taking magnesium on waking, and it does seem to help. Saturday and Sunday night I woke up around 1 am but both times it was to use the loo, rather than random waking up. I took a magnesium capsule both times after I'd been for a wee and was back asleep pretty quickly. I did wake up again this morning at 4 and 6 (alarm goes off at 7) but fell asleep again within minutes and I do feel a bit more clear headed today.

Frankbutchersfangs · 09/09/2024 10:39

I'm on my third day of increased oestrogen pump (from 1.5 mg to 3 mg) and last night was the best night's sleep since I stopped the Amitriptyline. From 11 pm until 6 am with no waking up in the night. Fingers crossed. 😬

LivingDeadGirlUK · 09/09/2024 11:58

Glad to hear peoples improvements!

I'm the same. Started 6 weeks ago. I take magnesium glycinate and do all the rights things, no caffeine or alcohol etc. Whatever time I go to bed I just keep waking up at 4am. I'm exhausted all day but it doesn't translate into sleeping well at night.

I'm going to try to start taking a quick nap after lunch as I wfh. But I'm a light sleeper so any little noise wakes me up. Not sure it will work.

Play white noise on YouTube yo help the noise waking you up! Helps me massively when DH takes the kids downstairs for me while me and the baby have an extra hour in bed

Sorry if anyone has already said this but have you got thyroid issues? One of the symptoms can be night waking.

I don't. Tested recently as well.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 09/09/2024 21:43

I've had a full set of bloods done today so we will find out!

Hello fellow insomniacs. It's nice to hear that I'm not in this alone. I'm 41. It's been happening for a year or two.

Alcohol, I find is always a bad idea. Caffeine after 10am is also a no. Magnesium helps. As does exercise. Not looking at the clock if I wake up or, failing that, getting up for a bit then returning helps me get back to sleep. I tried Nightol last night, that worked.

It's shit isn't it?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 10/09/2024 02:21

It was going so well, now 2am here we are lol. I have woken up full of cold and had to get up for some paracetamol, which is unfair when things were going so well!

I've been up/awake since 2 am this morning. Went to bed at 9. I've started taking magnesium but not really sure if it's helping. I take it around 8.30 pm (one tablet). Not tried taking one on waking.

Me too it’s utterly shit. I just seem to have got used to surviving on rubbish sleep. Can’t remember the last time I woke up feeling refreshed. I dream about the days I used to sleep until 11 as a student

Me too. 😓

LivingDeadGirlUK · 10/09/2024 03:39

I tried taking another magnesium but I feel even more awake now.
