Start of school year teachers gift

llamajohn · 02/09/2024 16:26

What would primary school teachers and staff appreciate as a gift for the first week or so term? I know it's really hard work those first few days.

There's probably 25 members of staff, including support staff

Was thinking maybe 3-4 little tubs of mini rolls /crispy treats and the like?

Or do you think something more long lasting?

My job is fucking hard. Would anyone like to buy me a present?

And this. Every time I go on annual leave please.

What a lovely idea, ignore the jealousy. Sometimes it's nice to be nice isn't it? If only there was more random acts of kindness. 1 parent doing this discreetly does not make it 'a thing'and if you don't agree, don't do it. It's a few mini rolls not a harrods voucher....! Each to their own, I have randomly got flowers a few times for the teacher.

Please tell me what the jealousy is, I can’t work it out?

I’m a teacher and much more pro-gifting than many teachers on MN seem to be, but this seems both unnecessary and a bit odd. A gift to say thank you to a known staff member for their support for your child during the year: yes please (wine please)! A start of the year gift smacks of trying to curry favour, which would make me feel quite uncomfortable.

@greglet

Keep mentioning Ms Greglet bought apples, carrots & a lovely Sauvignon for her Saturday night. Ms Greglrt took a bottle of Sauvignon & some ice creams to her friends BBQ.... hopefully it'll sink in as the ideal Christmas Gift 😀

I would assume you wanted your child to have a main part in the Christmas play.

Sugargliderwombat · 02/09/2024 18:04

Weird responses, there's often a box of biccies or something in the staffroom with a post it saying 'from xyz mum'. It's not weird but it's also not a 'thing' people are pressured to do. It is appreciated though :)

MattSmithsBowTie · 02/09/2024 18:05

Are you insane? They’re doing their job which they are paid for, they don’t need gifts, it’s enough with Christmas and end of year gifts without adding another one. If you were in my child’s class I’d hate you.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 02/09/2024 18:06

Don't start this. The rest of the parents in the class will hate you if this becomes a thing.

ichundich · 02/09/2024 18:07

Since when is that a thing? If you can volunteer your time, make sure your kid has everything they need every day, arrives on time, is able to dress themselves, put their shoes on, wear clothing that's appropriate for the weather, etc.

FourthEdition · 02/09/2024 18:08

Parents have occasionally done this in my school and something not ott, like a couple of tubs of mini rolls or something always goes down very well and is enormously appreciated.

As someone who has worked in education/childcare previously, and with a lot of teacher friends, I'd say the best present would be for parents to work with teachers - be cooperative, label uniform, be understanding that September can be a bit of a rocky start!

And what wound be also lovely in September is to not let the teachers be so bloody bias against their favourite children.
It’s so unfair and they notice it ( the children)…

And I say that as a person who works in education.

Gorgeousfeet · 02/09/2024 18:08

Would not wound 🙄

Because I know people who work in school and know how fucking hard the start of year is.

I was a teacher for 30 years and never heard of Start of the Year gifts. You really don't have to do it but Pritt sticks would be useful.

I’m not sure how the OP would even have the time to think the teachers might like some biscuits or the like because the work so had at the beginning of the school year. Of course she just wants to make some performative gesture.

Does she also run after the bin/refuse collectors who are out taking away her rubbish in all weathers. Or medical staff who she may have contact with - does she think how ‘fucking hard’ they work on long shifts, often short-staffed.

Or the front facing public transport workers who are regularly subject to verbal abuse from customers.

And so on.

Just4thisthreadtoday · 02/09/2024 18:11

Personally, I'd prefer your child was getting enough sleep, a healthy breakfast & positive attitude to going to school. That they were age appropriate independent & collected on time.

if you want to bring a gift, I'd rather it was something to help the classroom (depends on age, but pencils, rulers, glue sticks etc)

Without making a show of it. Start of term presents should not become 'a thing'

Maybe that poster thinks no-one else on this thread can afford cheap biscuits and chocolate? 😬

Best gift is to make sure your primary school child is potty trained !

Using the actual toilet please 🙏 .

Thudercatsrule · 02/09/2024 18:15

Oh fuck off really, theres enough pressure for xmas and end of year presents without starting suck up gifts as well at the start of the term.

noblegiraffe · 02/09/2024 18:17

Don't buy primary teachers (25 of them!) extra gifts when they already get overwhelmed by presents at Christmas and the end of year.

Save this money and desperation to buy teachers stuff for when your kids are at secondary school because we generally get fuck-all and also like tubs of crispy treats.

longdistanceclaraclara · 02/09/2024 18:19

How ridiculous. Does it go with a back to school box?!

Bogofftosomewherehot · 02/09/2024 18:29

@Painauraison
Jealous? Of what? 😂

OP - please don't be "that" parent!

this...

thursdaymurderclub · 02/09/2024 18:45

where will it end... we will have to get an end of half term gift? a back to school after the half term gift? a gift for teacher training day? a gift for the 'school production' day? do we need to note every teachers birthday so they get a gift off every child?

i know teaching is a tough job.. but lots of people have tough jobs.. i'm fairly sure teachers don't 'expect' any gifts and appreciate any kind gestures..

Hmmmmamilucky · 02/09/2024 18:49

I echo what PP have said and at the risk of sounding grumpy don’t make this into a thing 😂😂🙈. It’s yet another thing to add to the huge to do list for back to school, more money when money is tight for many. Parents who also have to work through the holidays will struggle to find the time…also teachers may not appreciate loads of sweet treats. I know I wouldn’t. Stick to Xmas and end of the year?
