Start of school year teachers gift

What would primary school teachers and staff appreciate as a gift for the first week or so term? I know it's really hard work those first few days.

There's probably 25 members of staff, including support staff

Was thinking maybe 3-4 little tubs of mini rolls /crispy treats and the like?

Or do you think something more long lasting?

Lovely idea very kind and thoughtful.
Not sure why some people think its sucking up or why other parents would give you the side eye, even if they do so what it's none of their business.
Card factory sell nice teacher gifts if your in the UK.

Dotto · 02/09/2024 17:19

It's not a thing, therefore this would come across as performative and insincere.

Bignanna · 02/09/2024 17:22

Best gift is to make sure your primary school child is potty trained !

Because I know people who work in school and know how fucking hard the start of year is.

I work in schools and have first hand experience of how difficult - but also rather exciting - the start of the year is and I still wouldn't buy, or indeed expect, a gift. It's not necessary.

TinyYellow · 02/09/2024 17:26

I’m support staff and as much as I love the appreciation we get from parents, this really isn’t necessary. Save it and show your gratitude at the end of the year or if you really want to do something nice (which is lovely of you) a tub of celebrations or a box of biscuits for the staff room is plenty.

oh sweet jesus.. why do you need to send the teachers a gift for the first day of school??

all these parents who do this, is it like a bribe? why do you feel you need to send a gift?

would it not make more sense to make sure that your child is kitted out properly, clothing labelled correctly, rules for packed lunches adhered too?

is this a new form of virtue signalling? its ridiculous

Allthehorsesintheworld · 02/09/2024 17:32

If your child’s name is on all belongings, they can use the toilet and wash their hands, and as a bonus can blow their own nose you’ve done enough and your child’s teachers will be very grateful.

Meditationgame · 02/09/2024 17:33

This is the funniest OP I've seen on here for a while.

greglet · 02/09/2024 17:33

I’m a teacher and much more pro-gifting than many teachers on MN seem to be, but this seems both unnecessary and a bit odd. A gift to say thank you to a known staff member for their support for your child during the year: yes please (wine please)! A start of the year gift smacks of trying to curry favour, which would make me feel quite uncomfortable.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 02/09/2024 17:34

And there was an Etsy ad yesterday ( tv or radio , can’t remember) which said “ all back to school things available on Etsy” and included teacher gifts so maybe we should blame them for starting this?

xyz111 · 02/09/2024 17:35

Never heard of this, but there's tinned Christmas sweets in shops already, maybe some boxes of quality street?

TeapotTitties · 02/09/2024 17:35

llamajohn · 02/09/2024 16:41

Because I know people who work in school and know how fucking hard the start of year is.

And a tub of Heroes is going to solve that?

You'll look like 'that parent' if you start this sort of thing.

Mumdiva99 · 02/09/2024 17:37

It's absolutely not necessary. But I would love a few bottles of diet coke to stick in the fridge!! (Or a box of cans).

No chocolates.....September has to be eating healthily month!

HansHolbein · 02/09/2024 17:37

New level of cringe.

God no. Why does working hard have to equate to cheapy chocolate cakes?

I wonder if the OP is going to do the same for the cleaners?

Why won't someone thiiink of the cleeeeaners!

Teachers don't need gifts.
Teachers need parents who support and encourage their children, and who have realistic expectations of both their children and their teachers.

This. Also, if I were a teacher I would really not appreciate more sugary, UPF ridden crap being foisted on me. Please don’t

KickAssAngel · 02/09/2024 17:47

I'm a teacher. I'm fed up of sugary crap and don't really think of it as a treat, more of something to get rid of.

But a packet of pencils or rubbers or sharpeners etc is really exciting! Particularly as it helps the kids with the greatest needs and makes my job easier.

I suspect that I'm a very dull person.

Mylittlepea · 02/09/2024 17:49

Fuck me, I’ve heard it all now.
return to work gifts because it’s hard……yes I get teaching is tough but the majority have just had 6 weeks off FFS

ThereIsATInWater · 02/09/2024 17:50

Having been in a school staff room today...there was plenty of cakes and bits supplied by the head.

saveforthat · 02/09/2024 17:53

My job is fucking hard. Would anyone like to buy me a present?

FreebieWallopFridge · 02/09/2024 17:54

What fresh hell is this that I’m going to be getting pressured to do now? Start of term gifts?!

WhyDoesItAlways · 02/09/2024 17:56

I've bought glue sticks as the teacher has specifically asked for each child to being one and if possible a donation of extras for the class. Wouldn't think to buy anything for the teachers specifically. Please don't make this a thing. Totally ridiculous.
