Dd piercing pushy after 6 weeks

Dd ten had her ears peirced at the beginning of summer. It's almost been six weeks and no issues at all. Yesterday she said it was hard to turn ( she has been cleaning but my son who had his pierced at 18 was told not clean or turn). It looked like the back was on to tight. Today she was crying and showed me a cotton pad with blood and puss on. I looked and pus was just dripping out.

Just waiting in clinic now to be seen

You say she's been cleaning them but how often? My DD was told to wash twice a day with saline solution, from memory.
Why was she turning them? I hope you manage to get her seen soon.

The current advice from piercing studios is to ‘trust the crust’ no cleaning, turning or messing with them for several weeks. She may have to remove them and try again another time.

Don't remove the piercings! If it's infected the holes will close over and "seal" the infection in, keeping the wound open helps it drain. She also needs to wash her hands before cleaning them and stop playing with them, they're open wounds.

Which is ridiculous, really. Of course you should keep open wounds clean.

@IncessantNameChanger glad she's been seen at the clinic. Next time keep up the daily cleaning and germolene is fantastic for helping tricky piercings to heal.

InandOutlander · 01/09/2024 16:27

Did she have them pierced with a proper sterilised needle at a piercing studio?

Minor injuries. She been trialed so think it was right place, wasn't turned away.

She was cleaning twice a day.

None round here given that advice…..my GD 7 was given a bottle of cleaning solution..,,she’s cleaned twice daily……2 years later she’s never had an issue with her ears

With clean hands or "clean" hands? Was she playing with them during the day?

Tattoo place. It's all be fine until yesterday. The studio was fine. No reason to think they used anything dirty. They unwrapped each needle in front of me. The other Tattoo studio told my son to leave them completely

Well she is ten so my idea of clean isn't her standard. I did think she too young. Arrggh! You might have a point

Thistooshallpass24 · 01/09/2024 17:17

@IncessantNameChanger if they were fine yesterday I wouldn't worry too much, probably just need more regular cleaning with saline / warmed salt water.
Have you gone to hospital or back to the tattoo/ piercer?

Mistycactus · 01/09/2024 17:20

They prob just need some extra cleaning. Might have got some shampoo or something in them or been knocked a bit

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 01/09/2024 17:24

When my dc had ear piercings, one got infected. We went back to the piercing studio who changed it the earring - a titanium flat back thing - and cleaned the site. He told us to leave it alone apart from spraying with prontolint (?) spray, which worked wonders.

Glittertwins · 01/09/2024 17:28

Needle piercings don't need turning due to the way it's done.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 01/09/2024 17:31

Savlon wound wash spray. Used on most of my piercings back in the day. Never had any problems. Hope it clears up.

Well that was what the very reputable and highly experienced piercing studio told us and my Dds piercings healed beautifully within 3 weeks and have had no issues since 🤷🏼‍♀️.
We were told cleaning and turning was out of date advice. Turning in particular just adds another possible way of bacteria being introduced to the area.

Smartiepants79 · 01/09/2024 18:54

Oh, and cleaning solution is just a way of making some extra cash! Completely unnecessary. There are lots of cheaper alternatives. Salt solution being one.

the Cleaning solution came as part of the package and it was very reasonable as we live in a small town in the NW ….,both my GD1 7 and then my GD2 age 5 had their ears done there…no turning…just cleaning ….both sets of ears healed lovely 😊

You let young children have their ears pierced?

yes 🙄
most kids have their ears pierced at 5 or 6 where I am

Thistooshallpass24 · 01/09/2024 19:43

@IncessantNameChanger i wasn't implying you were wrong to take her, I just wasn't sure if the wording "clinic".
I'm sure her ear will heal soon enough

As someone who has had lots of piercings, the danger time for infections is when you think they've fully healed because that's when you get lax about cleaning them.

Don't take the earrings out, if you can submerge her ear in a small bowl of saline solution or lay her on her side with a towel around her ear put cotton wool drenched in warm saline on the front and back of the piercing it will help.

Don't panic, lots of people get infected piercings with blood and pus and as long as it's cleaned quickly and regularly they will be fine.
