Who loves London?

NorthernLiner · 31/08/2024 09:19

Personally I do.
Everything about it.
Studied, lived and worked there for a good 15+ years, only moved out to the home counties to buy bigger house when kids arrived.
Just spent 5 days at the in-laws in Zone 2.
Totally satisfied my London fix 😍

Anyone else ❤️ London?

Absolutely. I’ve lived in various bits of it for about 25 years & finally settled in the west in zone 4. It’s like living in a village / small town, with most of what I need in walking distance & a tube station round the corner to get me straight into the centre.

familyissues12345 · 31/08/2024 09:25

Yep, love the place.

Fortunately, we live within an hour of it, so can visit very easily, but I'd love to live closer!

I'm hoping that DS might get a job in London once he graduates so I have even more of a reason to go in.

I just love the history, the buildings and I really love the people who live there/visit.

SummerSplashing · 31/08/2024 09:25

ME

I loved living there. I bought outside because it's what I could afford. I miss living there so much. It's not the same visiting for the day or staying in a hotel.

Johnnyfartpants · 31/08/2024 09:25

Lived here all my life, couldn’t love it more and have no plans to leave!

DadJoke · 31/08/2024 09:27

It’s the finest city in the world if you can afford housing. So many things to do, quirky little museums, incredible restaurants, amazing public transport and wonderful architecture.

Livinginaclock · 31/08/2024 09:30

Absolutely love it, visiting from Glasgow for the 5th and 6th times this year next month.

MoveOnTheCards · 31/08/2024 09:31

Yes! I moved here in my early 20s and can’t imagine living anywhere else now.

Love the variety of people, things to do, places to go and experiences it offers. And yes, we make the most of the things on our doorstep.

Hoppinggreen · 31/08/2024 09:31

I love visiting for a few days at a time and then scurrying back North where I feel I can breathe (and afford to live)
Its a great city though and I wish I knew it a bit better

RemakeRemarke · 31/08/2024 09:32

Yes love it

LizzieSiddal · 31/08/2024 09:35

Yes I do. I don't live there but about an hour and a half away on the train.
I absolutely love going up there for a day or two, wandering around, visiting theatre, museums etc, finding new restaurants to eat in and then coming home to green fields! Dd lives there so it’s lovely meeting up with her too. It’s a magnificent place!

clarkkentsglasses · 31/08/2024 09:40

When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life, for there is in London all that life can afford.

HappyStep1 · 31/08/2024 09:42

Best city in the World and my home town.
Can't afford to live there but live within an hour and regularly get my London fix.

NorthernLiner · 31/08/2024 09:45

We didn't move too far out, 40 mins tops so go there quite regularly but it's still not the same as living right there!
DH goes in 1-2 days a week for work, and I go in maybe 2 times a month.
Luckily we have in-laws place to stay pretty much whenever we want (they're away 6+ months a year)
My plan is to buy a very, very central pad when I'm older 😉

@Hoppinggreen I feel the same . I love it but after a few days I need to get away from the hustle and bustle.

SocksShmocks · 31/08/2024 09:51

I love it. Live in zone 5 so maybe some people would say that isn’t proper London but we’re on the Tube and I work in the centre. It’s not a perfect city by any means and certainly has deprivation and social problems but there’s so much to do and green space and many beautiful buildings, and just LIFE.

I opened the thread with some trepidation because it seems popular to slag off London and say how awful it is and how the rest of the country is the proper U.K. I always feel defensive when I read things like that.

User050105 · 31/08/2024 09:51

Me!

Moved back to Scotland in my mid 30s but still visit often. There's just so much going on. I feel the buzz of excitement as soon as I step off the train, all the people going by. I could people watch all day.

Needmorelego · 31/08/2024 09:53

I live there (Zone 3). I don't hate it but I'd rather live somewhere else.
90% of my life is school and supermarket. I could do that anywhere 😂

CandiedPrincess · 31/08/2024 09:54

Me! It's my favourite city in the while world, and I've been to many different ones but I'd pick London any day of the week. So vibrant, so much history, so much gorgeous green space, beautiful buildings, something to see around every corner, a giant melting pot. Love it.

I really wish I'd lived in London, even if it was just for a year.

ME ME ME! Best city in europe, possibly the world. ❤️❤️❤️❤️. Also often have to tell the Thames how beautiful she looks. Crazy? Maybe!

What is your reason for staying?

Nuggetnuggety · 31/08/2024 09:57

I do like it, the skyline is unmatched & as a Londoner it’s my hometown. However I think it’s changed, obviously change is normal but I think it’s lost some of its fun, creativity, diversity & youthfulness as it’s now so expensive & Brexit. Schools are closing/facing closure due to huge drops in rolls.

I think Manchester has gotten more exciting & will continue on this trajectory as it’s been attracting more young people over the last few years.

Nuggetnuggety · 31/08/2024 10:00

@Needmorelego I see your point. I think z3 is very different to living in z1 & when I was growing up there it was very much considered the suburbs, which seems to really offend people now 😆. Much of what I did then & now I could do in most other places & I may have more on my actual doorstep in other places.

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 31/08/2024 10:01

I love to visit for a day or two, I lived there for 2 years and worked there for 10 years, but I couldn't abide to live there any longer than that. It's too busy, too dirty and there are just so many people everywhere all the time.
I go a few times a year now to see an exhibition, Chelsea flower show etc, I don't want to be crammed on the tube next to someone's sweaty armpit so now take cabs everywhere, so much more civilised and pleasant. The buzz of the city is great for a couple of days but then I long to be home in fresh air and space and away from the hoards of people.

Echobelly · 31/08/2024 10:03

Lifelong Londoner and I love it here. For history, culture etc it's hard to beat. London may not be the most beautiful city (though the views when crossing the central bridges still fill me with wonder every time) but it is endlessly fascinating. I love the mix of cultures and how we all make London together. Public transport is expensive, but it is extensive and generally frequent, which is great.

Nuggetnuggety · 31/08/2024 10:05

Twixmas is a great time to explore/walk about as it really hollows out.
