Cafetiere on screen - hot coffee!?

On movies/TV shows, so often a character will go into a kitchen and help themselves to a cafetiere coffee that someone else has made or looks as though it's been sat around for a while. Is my £15 Dunelm cafetiere a dudd because the coffee in it cools as quickly as if it was in a cup and unless it's drank quickly after making, it's cold.

Obviously I know TV/movies aren't real but it's the implication that this is a normal thing and the coffee would still be warm.

Am I missing a trick?

Our car garage has an electric filter coffee jug which stays warm. Think it has a hot plate underneath to keep it that way. Could it be that you have seen?

Don’t remember seeing that in movies etc. But generally the larger the cafetière the longer it stays warm. Our small 1-2 person one gets cold v quickly but a large 6+ person one stays warm for quite a while. And we’ll always holler around “made some coffee” so people know to drift down.

@Strawberr13s - we have a double walled insulated cafetière which might work for what you want?

Lovelysummerdays · 31/08/2024 08:40

Ours is double insulated too but stainless steel as opposed to glass coffee stays hot in it for hours. It has a self closing lid for spout unless pouring so is pretty airtight.

helpfulperson · 31/08/2024 08:40

We have a cosy round our cafetière which keeps it warm for a bit but not as long as the type with a hotplate.

Strawberr13s · 31/08/2024 08:54

Definitely a cafetiere, I grew up with the other type.

Ah thanks everyone, it seems ours mustn't be double walled. It's not even fancy looking so I was shocked when I saw similar ones in Poundland for a couple of quid!

I tried to find mine on the Dunelm website and can't quite see the model but I recall it being 8 cups. Dunelm have lots of styles though so it looks as though I need to invest in something designed for insulation, they have copper ones which I recall from primary school days singing "I want a proper cup of coffee, made in a proper copper coffee pot" so maybe there's something in a copper based one too for quality (or maybe old fashioned coffee pots were just made from copper!!?!!)

I've honestly never seen a Cafetiere in a movie or TV show. Only American style coffee pots.

I've had no success with Cafetieres but I swear by my Moka Pot.

Hours sounds dreamy for WFH days! Definitely going to find something similar.

I saw one recently, in a UK set Netflix thing. Can't remember exactly what it was, we've binged a lot of short series this summer!

Just to be clear, is an American pot different to a UK filter coffee machine???

An old fashioned tea cosy keeps our cafetière nice and hot.

I never had any such thing until an older regular guest gave us one - he liked early morning tea in a teapot (we had one of those but rarely used it) and that meant a cosy to keep it hot.
I was chuffed to find that it worked just as well for the cafetière.

longdistanceclaraclara · 31/08/2024 09:06

You need a double walled one if you want it to stay warm. I just microwave the coffee if it's cold. Well I used to be but then realised the reason for my 'insomnia' was the whole cafetière of coffee I was drinking during the day!

Oh heck! I have a rule of no caffeine after 3pm for this reason! I'd only manage 2 cups through a morning but would be lovely whilst working to keep topping up a little at a time for hot coffee 😁

I knew different materials keep things hot for longer and I know how thermos flasks work so not sure why I didn't connect the two! I think I had it in my head that coffee pots were always glass and the same standard - I'm embarrassed!!

This is the sort of thing I mean that I regularly see in movies. Yes, Filter or Drip machines. I think the American ones are better as they are more popular there than kettles. I used to live there so we had them as standard. Still prefer the Moka Pot though!

It is but I’m worried about my caffiene intake tbh. I bought in tk max 12 years ago after a bad run of cracking glass cafetières. I’d never go back to glass now.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 31/08/2024 09:37

I just chuck a teatowel over it and that keeps it a lot warmer - the best for coming back to later would be the filter machine, as that keeps it perfectly hot almost indefinitely. I do the same with tea made in a teapot, as I can't be arsed to make a teacosy and the pot's too small for a standard one (not a fan of the knitted ones).

Weirdly, I get really sleepy if I drink Moka pot coffee, so I only use it for coffee cake or if I'm going to have an iced coffee with lots of coconut milk.

Summertimer · 31/08/2024 09:41

DH and I drink black coffee in the morning, it keeps hot for an hour or so for black coffee drinkers. About 40 mins for white coffee with not too much milk, which is what DS likes if he wants any coffee

We have a Bodum Cafetiere, plastic and glass. Last year we briefly had one by Sipp, metal and glass. Expensive from John Lewis. It broke, we’d had the previous Bodum one for years, so bought similar one from Amazon

The Michael Caine character uses a cafetière in the opening scene of ‘The Ipcress File’. However, he leaves the coffee in there for far too short a time before pressing the plunger. The coffee would be scalding hot and taste like dishwater.

DelurkingAJ · 31/08/2024 09:56

I have this…heat pad stays on for an hour…it is the WFH dream.

If anyone’s interested, here’s Michael Caine as Harry Palmer in ‘The Ipcress File’, demonstrating how not to use a cafetière. He waits about one second before plunging and doesn’t stir the coffee at all.

This. Americans all use coffee machines with a pot that’s kept warm.
