How much did your dd grow after starting their period? (Especially if they started young?)

Inspired by the how tall are your children thread…

Dd started her periods last month at 10years 10 months. She is 5ft 1.

Shes always been towards the 90th centile mark for height (and under that for weight).

DD hasn’t really had much of a ‘growth spurt’ - she’s always been one of the taller ones out of her friends and is probably as proportionately tall against them now going into year 6 as she was starting reception.

I keep on reading that girls tend to grow an average of 2 inches after their periods start over about 2 years. Even if Dd grows double that amount she’ll end up 5ft 5 which would be short for my side of the family.

Just wondering if that’s a bit outdated now with girls starting their periods younger these days.
How much did your dd grow after menarche? And how long did it take her to get to that height?

ironically I also was one of the tallest girls at primary school only to pretty much stop growing once I went to secondary.

Isnt that quite normal, a lot of the tall dc in primary have just had their spurt sooner & then get overtaken. I was average height & the second shortest of my friend group (there were 5 of us). At secondary I was the 2nd tallest, I’m 5ft 9, maybe grew an inch or so post period.

A couple of inches max.
She started at 10y 10m, 2.5 years ago.
Her feet havn't grown in that time.
She's topped out at about 5'6, a bit shorter than me.

like me, she was the tallest on primary school for many years, but now people are catching her up, and overtaking.

My DD started age 12 and grew about two more inches to the grand height of 5’1” over the next two years. She has been 5’1” since 14, in the last year, (18-19 years old), she has been travelling for most of the year, she came back to the uk in September and is a touch over 5’2.5” now 😆I never thought she would grow so late but she did, I also grew until I turned 19, but I was a late developer and didn’t start my periods until 16.

My DD started at 11 but hasn't grown taller since she was 12. She may have grown an inch in between but I don't know for sure how tall she was at 11. She's 168cm and 19 now. I'm 180cm, even my mum was 170cm, but her paternal grandmother was about 162cm.

No idea what height I was at 10 but I was never tall as a child, we had a teacher who picked teams on our height, everyone had to line up from shortest to tallest, and then she would alternate each team with one tail, one short girl, I was always just over the mid point of tallness, never any comments of aren't you tall! Started periods at 10 and I am 5 ft 8 inches now. This was the 70's

Thanks for bumping this thread. It’s been interesting reading more responses.
So dd started her period about 5 months ago now. Interestingly the other 2 tallest girls in her class have both had further growth spurts and are noticeably taller than her now. She’s still taller than the majority for now though.
dd has grown in the last 5 months - maybe up to an inch.

I found this in the Western Medical Journal which suggests girls who start their periods at the early side of average do grow more than those who start later. Obviously there are people on this thread whose experiences don’t back this up though.

My 11 year old is only 4ft 6 so I hope she doesn’t start her periods any time soon if she’s only likely to grow a couple of inches afterwards 😬

Did your daughter grow above 5ft eventually?

VikingLady · 09/04/2026 20:15

Tons. She started at 10 and she’s now 14. She’s at least five inches taller now, judging by where the top of her head reaches when I brush her hair. She’s going to be very tall.

I had a friend who kept growing until she was 20, and she started in her early teens, so I wouldn’t worry.

curiouspayrent · 09/04/2026 23:18

How tall was she when she was 10?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/04/2026 15:18

DD also started at 10y 10m. She was a pretty average size baby, but by the time she was 7 she was a head taller than most of her class. She was 5’5” with she started. She’s 14 and 5’8” now. She hasn’t grown really for a couple of years.

horumforaforum · 11/04/2026 10:52

So since I started this thread 19 months ago dd has grown nearly 3 inches. At one point it’s seemed like she wasn’t growing at all but has had another spurt since. She’s still sort of tall side of average compared to her friends but if she doesn’t grow much more she’ll end up being fairly short.

Hi @horumforaforum just found your thread again, did her feet stop growing, like my dd's did? She ended up size 3.5 - 4 depending on shoe style.

horumforaforum · 11/04/2026 14:45

Hi @silverbirches
I think they've grown a bit - although she’s got shoes in a variety of sizes depending on make/ purpose etc so it’s hard to tell!
